______

A one-act play

By Jan Jalenak

Jan Jalenak 267 W. Court Street Doylestown, PA 18901 [email protected] 917-273-6531 SCENE ONE. Motel Room. Two women in mid to late 30’s walk in. Meg is carrying a bottle of wine. Penelope is carrying a box of Krispy Creme Donuts. They put their bags, etc. down on the bed and smile awkwardly at each other. PENELOPE Smells kind of funny, huh? Meg I’m sorry, it’s the only... PENELOPE No, it’s fine. It’s fine. Penelope takes Meg’s hand, touching it gently, brings it to her face, kisses it. They look at each other and kiss tenderly on the lips, then get into a long strong hug. MEG Nice. PENELOPE Really nice. (pause, unsure) How about a glass of wine? Meg (looking around the room) I don’t see any glasses. Penelope I’ll check the bathroom. MEG Good idea. Penelope goes to bathroom as Meg surveys the motel room. PENELOPE (back from bathroom with a glass) We have to share. 2.

MEG Okay by me. PENELOPE I’ve got the corkscrew in my bag. (rummaging through her large fully stuffed shoulder bag.) I know I threw it in here. I always have too much shit in my bag. MEG Me too. PENELOPE Sorry. MEG No rush. Penelope begins to take things out of her bag. PENELOPE So silly. Unseen by Meg, Penelope takes out a bag of markers, a Barney toy, and a baggie of gold fish. PENELOPE (cont) Here it is. She takes out corkscrew and quickly throws everything else back in her bag and begins to open the wine bottle. PENELOPE (cont) You’d think they’d have two glasses. MEG I could go ask for another one. PENELOPE I don’t mind sharing. MEG I don’t either. Penelope finishes opening the bottle. PENELOPE There. We could drink from the bottle. 3.

MEG Why not? PENELOPE (handing bottle to Meg) You first. Meg Thanks. (takes a sip from bottle) Feels a little bit like high school. (hands bottle back to Penelope) Your turn. Penelope takes a sip and spills a bit. PENELOPE Shoot. MEG Maybe we should use the glass. PENELOPE I think so. (pours wine into glass) Cheers. (takes a sip, hands glass to Meg, goes to donut bag) Donut? MEG Sure. Haven’t had one of these in a while. I still can’t believe there was a Krispe Kreme right next to the liquor store. PENELOPE Lucky for me. Donuts are my weakness. MEG Doesn’t look like it. PENELOPE Thanks. MEG (taking bite) I never realized how good a donut tastes with a good bottle of red. PENELOPE This is nice wine. It definitely tastes better in the glass. 4.

Penelope downs the glass, pours more. MEG I gotta kiss you again. PENELOPE Me too. They kiss. It’s all discovery. They begin to explore each others’ body. A cell phone rings. They both jump. PENELOPE (goes to bag) Shit. Sorry. (pulls out phone) Hello? (phone is still ringing) It’s not me. MEG (goes to her coat) I thought it might be mine. (gets and looks at phone) Damn. I should answer it. (doesn’t) Ummm... PENELOPE Go ahead. MEG I don’t want to. The phone stops ringing. PENELOPE Do you want to call them back? MEG I guess I should. Just in case. PENELOPE You looked like it was important. MEG Probably not, but... it could be. PENELOPE I think you should call back. Get it out of the way. So you don’t have to think about it again. 5.

MEG All right. You’re right. One kiss first. Meg kisses Penelope, then pulls away reluctantly. MEG (CONT’D) I’ll call quick. I’m sure it’s nothing. (she dials cell phone) Lotus, hey. Steve’s not back? Damn. I’m sorry. He said he’d be there by 9:30. Did he call? Did you try his phone? Hmmmm... And you left him a message? Damn. Do you mind staying a while longer? I’m sure he’ll get your message and come soon. He promised he wouldn’t be late this time. ...You sure? I’d come now, but... I can’t leave for a while. You sure you don’t mind? That’s so great. Don’t forget to call your mom and let her know you’ll be later. Oh, and if you talk to her will you let her know I’m bringing the fruit bowl on Thursday? Thanks Lotus. Call me if he doesn’t get there in an hour. Thanks. (ends call, to Penelope) Shit. I am so sorry. PENELOPE (processing what she just heard) That’s okay. Everything okay? MEG Yeah. I have... kids. That was the baby sitter. PENELOPE You have kids. MEG Yes. PENELOPE And Steve is...? MEG My husband. PENELOPE You’re kidding. MEG No. PENELOPE (shocked) Wow. I can’t believe... 6.

MEG It’s not that shocking. It doesn’t mean I don’t want... PENELOPE No it’s just... how old are your kids? MEG Five and seven. PENELOPE Girls or boys? MEG Girls. PENELOPE (incredulous) That’s crazy. ...That is so crazy. MEG (starting to take offense) Why is that crazy? PENELOPE My girls are five and two and a half. MEG You have two daughters also? PENELOPE Yes. I do. And a husband. MEG No wonder we liked each other. PENELOPE Shit. It figures this is what would happen. MEG What do you mean it figures. PENELOPE Fuck. MEG What’s wrong with you? PENELOPE (clearly disappointed) Nothing. Sorry. Nothing. MEG Hey, it’s not like I picked you up under false pretenses. This was mutual. 7.

PENELOPE I know it was. It was very mutual. MEG So what is your problem? PENELOPE Don’t take offense. See, I’ve been waiting so many years. (getting angry) So many fucking years. To get up the nerve to go into that bar and find someone. To be with. MEG You mean forever? PENELOPE No. Not forever. One night would be fine. One good night. One night, where I could be with... a woman. MEG I am a woman. PENELOPE I wanted a lesbian. A real lesbian. MEG Well so did I if you must know. PENELOPE My point exactly. MEG I’m still attracted to you. (a moment) ...Let’s drink more wine. PENELOPE Okay. They take turns drinking from the glass. Meg finishes the glass and pours another, hands it to Penelope. MEG I don’t know why it has to make that much of a difference. It’s not that complicated. PENELOPE It’s not that I won’t know what to do. God knows I’ve fantasized about every aspect of being with a woman. I just wanted to be able to come here and lie down with... a woman. Naked. I wanted to be ravaged by a naked woman. 8.

I wanted to be able to get naked, lie down and be kissed from head to toe, be touched, be licked, without the awkwardness. Without the awkwardness. The way you looked at me at the bar... MEG We could take turns. Penelope takes a sip of wine. PENELOPE (not convinced) We could. MEG You look so sad. PENELOPE I’m sorry. MEG Maybe you should have another donut. PENELOPE Maybe so. Penelope takes a bite of a donut. MEG Want to get naked? PENELOPE Are you making fun of me? MEG No. I’m not. I am definitely not. PENELOPE Meg... MEG Yes Penelope? PENELOPE Meg. I’m still attracted to you too. It’s just... It doesn’t feel the same. MEG Doesn’t fit in with your fantasy? PENELOPE No. It doesn’t. You’re another mom. 9.

MEG Lesbians have children. PENELOPE You’re not a lesbian. MEG Don’t you think that’s a technicality? PENELOPE Technicality or not, it’s a fact. And the fact is, it’s not the same. I need to disappear into another psyche, another world, away from my marriage and my kids, away from people pulling at me, expectations, dishes, duties, wifely duties, sexual duties. I don’t want reminders of my life here in St. Louis. I don’t want to worry that your kids and my kids... MEG Your kids and my kids what? PENELOPE I don’t know. I’m sorry. It’s not your fault. I guess I wanted to see what life could be like if it was different. MEG (standing) Look, I’m not going to sit here and do a sell job. Meg gathers her coat and bag. MEG (cONT’D) Either you want to be with me or not. And for that matter, you’re right. It’s not the same now. (at the door) I just wonder what would have happened if I’d never gotten that phone call. They look at each other, remembering. PENELOPE Don’t leave. MEG Why should I stay? PENELOPE I want you to. To stay. Please. I’m sorry. Just stay. For a few more minutes? MEG Only if we take our shirts off. 10.

PENELOPE I’m wearing a dress. MEG Okay. Your dress. PENELOPE Okay. MEG Okay. Penelope takes off her dress. Meg takes off her shirt. They sit. MEG Are you happily married? PENELOPE I don’t know. Sometimes I am. Not the way I thought I would be though. ...Are you? MEG No. I am not. For sure not. PENELOPE Is this something you do? MEG No. ...I have done it before. But only once. PENELOPE How’d it turn out? MEG She was a real lesbian. PENELOPE What do you mean? MEG I don’t know. You seem tender. PENELOPE You too. Can I kiss you? MEG Yeah. You can kiss me. They kiss. There is no awkwardness. They lie down on the bed. After a moment, Penelope gets up. 11.

PENELOPE Hold on a sec. MEG (alarmed) What? PENELOPE I want to pull the covers back. (pulls the covers back) Take your pants off. I want to ravage you. Meg gets up and takes her pants off. They are standing in their underwear, looking at each other. MEG You’re beautiful. PENELOPE So are you. MEG Lie down. I want to go first. Penelope lies down. Meg begins to pull off Penelope’s underwear as the lights fade.

SCENE TWO. Penelope walks into a motel room and turns on the light. She stares at the bed, then sits. She pulls out a bottle of red wine and opens it. She pulls two wine glasses and a candle out of her bag and puts them out on the night stand, lights the candle and pours a glass of wine. She looks over to an imaginary person on the other side of the bed. Penelope Cheers. Penelope giggles and takes a sip of wine. She sits back, relaxing. Suddenly she jumps up and goes to the mirror, unbuttons a button of her shirt and studies herself. 12.

Not quite satisfied, she takes her bra off from under her shirt, then puts it in her bag. She fiddles with her hair, then takes another sip of wine. PENELOPE (sexy voice into mirror) Cheers. Her phone rings. She searches though her bag, sees the number and answers. PENELOPE (excited) The wine is open. What? Oh. Oh. No, it’s fine. I just got here. You are coming, right? Can’t someone else do it? Well, I have to be home by bedtime. I promised Livi. We can do this another time. It’s fine. We can do it another time. No, I’m not mad. It’s just five minutes isn’t going to be enough and I don’t want to be late. ...No, then you will have to rush. I don’t want you to feel rushed. What about Steve? Can’t he do it? Oh. I don’t think you can pick her up and drop her at soccer and get here that fast. Will she let you just drop her anyway? Won’t she want you to stay for a bit? You sure? If you are sure, then... fine. I’ll read my book. I brought a book. No, I wasn’t expecting this, I have a book. I always carry a book. Don’t worry about it. I’m fine. Down time is always welcome. No, I still want you to come. I’m excited. I’ll see you when you get here. I’ll wait. I’ll be here. (hangs up the phone, disappointed) Poo. She goes to her bag and gets out a book and sits on the bed. She lies down and closes her eyes. Lights down. Lights up on room, later. Penelope is sleeping. Todd, a man in his early 40’s, walks up outside the motel room and puts ear to door, listening intently. He tries unsuccessfully to see through the peephole into the room. He hesitates, then bangs on the door. Inside, Penelope wakes with a start. PENELOPE (getting up from the bed) Okay, okay. 13.

(Todd knocks again.) I’m coming. Penelope stops at the mirror, checks herself out, then goes to the door and turns the knob. Todd immediately pushes his way through. Todd Where is he? (barging around, searching) Where is he?! PENELOPE Todd! What are you doing here? How did you... TODD You’re not hard to follow. I knew you were up to something. Where is he? PENELOPE Who? TODD You tell me. Todd looks in the bathroom, then under the bed. PENELOPE There’s no one here. TODD Then where the fuck is he? PENELOPE Who? TODD Your GUY. PENELOPE (hesitates) ...I’m looking at him. TODD Don’t be a smart ass. PENELOPE Todd, there is no guy. TODD I’m not an idiot, Penelope. I know what you are up to. 14.

PENELOPE I promise you. There is no man. TODD A bottle of wine, two fucking wine glasses, those are our godamn glasses that we got as wedding presents. And look at you, you look sexy, it’s the middle of the day, a cheap motel room. What the fuck. A cheap motel room. You insult me. If you are going to have an affair, at least go to the Hyatt, even a fucking Holiday Inn. Jesus. What is he, a truck driver? PENELOPE There is no man. I am telling you. TODD Who are you? I don’t know you. PENELOPE I swear to God. I swear on the life of our children. There is no man. Todd looks at Penelope. TODD How can you swear on the life of our children? Is nothing sacred? I truly have no idea who the woman is that I am looking at. PENELOPE I know this looks strange. Me, here. I know what it looks like. Two wine glasses. Our wine glasses. Maybe you should have a glass of wine. Why don’t we have some wine. Penelope pours a glass of wine for Todd and tops up her glass. TODD I don’t understand you. Is that a bottle of Chateau Simaurd? Damnit. PENELOPE Todd, it’s not what it looks like. TODD Then what the fuck is it? PENELOPE It’s... it’s... TODD Think hard, dear. You’ll come up with something I’m sure. 15.

PENELOPE It’s hard to explain is all. I came here to be... to have... to think. To pretend. It’s a fantasy. TODD A what?! PENELOPE A fantasy. You’ve been working really hard. You’ve been so stressed out. Not very happy. Not very happy with me. TODD I don’t know what you’re talking about. PENELOPE It seems like everything I do is wrong, the way I keep house, the way I discipline the girls... TODD Discipline the girls? I didn’t know you knew that word. PENELOPE That’s what I’m talking about. Everything I say, you have something sarcastic and critical to say about it. I can’t talk to you. I wanted to come here and feel good. TODD You came here, checked into this seedy motel to masturbate? You can do that at home where it’s clean. PENELOPE Fuck you. TODD You know, if we had sex every now and then, you would feel good. You never want to have sex. PENELOPE I want to have sex with someone who likes me. You never seem to like me. TODD What? PENELOPE I’m serious. I know it seems odd. I just wanted to come to this room and enjoy being here. TODD It’s disgusting here. PENELOPE It’s not that bad. In fact, I wanted to call you, to come here. 16.

First I wanted to come by myself, have a glass of nice wine, pretend that you, yes you, my husband, who I love, is with me, and loving me, appreciating me. I picked this motel because... TODD You picked this motel because you can pay cash and no one asks questions. Don’t bullshit me. What, did he stand you up? PENELOPE This is why I am here. Because you have no faith in me. TODD Faith? I knew something was fishy when you said you had these meetings. Your “mysterious” meetings are not so mysterious. What kind of meetings would you be having anyway?? PENELOPE See what I mean? All you see is your own world of finance. Anything I do is inconsequential.

(getting emotional) I love you. I want our marriage to work. But if you never believe in me, then... I had to come here to pretend to be with you. Because when I’m with you, I’m not. TODD I’m afraid I don’t follow the with and not with. PENELOPE I know you don’t. TODD I want to try. I want to understand. PENELOPE You used to look at me. You used to touch me. Spontaneously put your hand on my shoulder, or my back. You’d come up from behind me and rub my back in a way that I would melt. But you don’t look at me. You don’t touch me. You don’t rub my back. Todd goes to Penelope and gently puts his hands on her shoulders and looks at her. TODD I have faith in you. PENELOPE I don’t see it. 17.

TODD P, I love you. I think you are an amazing woman. An incredible mother, a fantastic human being... I’m sorry. You’re right. I have been working too hard. The stress has been getting to me. Come here baby. I’m sorry. They hug, she’s emotional. TODD Everything’s going to be fine. We will get through this. PENELOPE I know. They kiss. It gets hot. TODD How long you got the room for? PENELOPE Maybe we should just go home. TODD Are you kidding. A motel room? You and me? No kids underfoot? I don’t know why I didn’t think of this. PENELOPE What about the kids? TODD Sandra can stay late. Come here you little motel vixen. He kisses her. TODD (CONT’D) Whatcha got on under that sexy shirt of yours? He starts unbuttoning her shirt. There is a knock at the door. He stops, looks at her. Meg is at the door, knocking. Neither go to the door. Meg Penelope? Penelope is paralyzed. MEG Are you still there? 18.

Todd looks at Penelope. Penelope looks at the door. Todd looks confused. PENELOPE (weakly) Coming. (to Todd) It’s my friend, Meg. She’s my friend. Penelope gets up and opens the door. MEG (giving her a hug) Hey, I thought you’d left. PENELOPE Hey, look who showed up? My husband. Isn’t that great? MEG Huh? Did you invite him? PENELOPE He surprised me. Meg, this is Todd. Todd, this is Meg. They look at each other. MEG Hello. TODD Hello. PENELOPE (to Meg) Glass of wine? MEG Are we having a party? TODD I thought you came here to be alone. PENELOPE I did. I did. I did. Meg is my friend. Meg, that’s great that you came by. I forgot I told you I was coming here. TODD Where do you two know each other from? PENELOPE She’s a mom. She has two girls too. 19.

TODD Are the girls in school together? MEG No. PENELOPE Must have been dance class or something. MEG I’m gonna go. Nice to meet you, Todd. PENELOPE You don’t have to leave. MEG What am I staying for? PENELOPE (improvising) I’ve been wanting to introduce you two for so long. What a coincidence. Todd, I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about Meg. TODD No. I haven’t. PENELOPE Oh come on. Meg? Of course I’ve talked about Meg. TODD Maybe... PENELOPE Definitely. MEG Penelope, it’s okay. I gotta go. I’ll call you. PENELOPE Wait. MEG What? PENELOPE Wait. MEG What? TODD Yeah, what? 20.

PENELOPE Nothing. It’s just... TODD Penelope, what’s she doing here? PENELOPE You know how girls are, how we talk. Meg was gonna show me some things. TODD Show you some things? What kind of things? MEG Yeah. What kind of things? PENELOPE Sexual things. So I could be better. For you. MEG Is that why I’m here? TODD This is getting kind of interesting. MEG I don’t think so. TODD What is going on? PENELOPE (suddenly, to Meg) What if we... were together. Here. Now. With Todd here. TODD This is getting really interesting. MEG This isn’t what I signed up for. Meg goes to the door. TODD What’d you do, put up a sign up sheet at Ali’s school? PENELOPE Meg, please don’t be mad at me. It’s just an idea. Since he’s here. He followed me. He thought I was having an affair with a man. TODD Is this what’s going on? You two? An affair? 21.

PENELOPE Meg. It might be great. Could we try? TODD You are full of surprises, Penelope. MEG I don’t know. PENELOPE Come on, sit down. Have a glass of wine. Let your hair down. Let’s all let our hair down. We’re here. In this room. Together. It’s an opportunity. MEG He has to watch. He can’t participate. TODD Can’t we play that by ear? MEG I’m not doing this. PENELOPE Todd, could you wait outside for a minute? Please? TODD Wait outside? Penelope pushes Todd out the door. TODD Okay, okay... Penelope closes the door. MEG What is going on with you? PENELOPE I don’t know. I just.. All of a sudden I want to do this. With you. And Todd. I want to share you with Todd. MEG I don’t want to share you. I came here to be with you. Alone. With you. PENELOPE Me too. But now that he’s here, I feel like, I don’t know. MEG Uh huh. 22.

PENELOPE I suddenly feel free. I really want you. And Todd is my husband. Can we just try it this once? MEG Gimme a glass of wine. And a kiss. Penelope gives Meg both. PENELOPE You’ve opened something in me. MEG Yeah, Pandora’s box. PENELOPE So what if it is? I want to be with you. MEG I want to be with you. PENELOPE May I open the door? Lights down. Moments later. Lights up on Meg, Penelope and Todd standing in front of the bed, looking at each other. Meg has a glass of wine in her hand. Penelope laughs nervously and takes the wine glass out of Meg’s hand, takes a few sips and hands it back to Meg, who then takes a sip. Todd goes over to the night stand and gets the other wine glass, takes a sip, then hands it to Penelope, who then takes a sip. Meg takes another sip of her wine. Penelope refills her glass, takes a couple of sips, then hands it to Todd. He drinks. Meg offers her glass to Penelope. Penelope I’m okay for now. Meg Should I put it down? PENELOPE You don’t want anymore? 23.

MEG No. I’m fine. PENELOPE Well I’ll have a little more. Penelope takes the glass and drinks it down, then makes a satisfying yet nervous sigh. They are all looking at each other. No one is making the first move. Todd takes a step forward. Meg takes a step back. Penelope takes a step toward Meg. Todd takes a step toward Penelope. Penelope takes Meg’s hand. Todd, not sure what to do, takes Penelope’s other hand. Penelope looks at Todd, then looks at Meg, then looks back at Todd. PENELOPE (to Todd) Maybe you should sit down for a minute. Todd Alright. I can sit down. (smiling) Where do you want me to sit down? PENELOPE On the chair. TODD Ah, the watching position. MEG Don’t make jokes. TODD Sorry. Penelope releases Meg’s hand and takes Todd over to the chair, kisses him sweetly, sits him down, then walks back over to the dresser. PENELOPE I’m going to put the music on. Penelope pushes a button on the speaker. Barry White’s song, “Love Making Music” plays softly. 24.

Penelope goes to Meg. They take each other’s hands, instinctively close their eyes and take a deep breath, then hug closely. Penelope then breaks the hug and kisses Meg. After a moment Penelope breaks the kiss and looks over at Todd. He is smiling. She smiles at him, as she would to reassure a child. She takes off her blouse. Meg takes off her shirt. Todd takes off his shirt. The two girls are looking at each other. To them, Todd is not in the room. They kiss, then move toward the bed. TODD (feeling left out) Let me know when I should jump in. The women ignore him as they get more intimate. TODD (CONT’D) (after a moment) You don’t have to say anything, just give me some kind of sign. Meg starts unzipping Penelope’s pants as Penelope does the same to Meg, both ignoring Todd. TODD Any kind of sign is fine. Penelope looks over at Todd. He stands, unsure if this is his sign. A cell phone rings. TODD Damn. (looks at cell phone) It’s Sandra. PENELOPE Answer it. TODD I am. (answers) Hey Sandra. Everything alright? She doesn’t? Why not? 25.

PENELOPE What? TODD (into phone) How bad does it hurt? PENELOPE What? What hurts? Todd motions to Penelope that it’s nothing. TODD (into phone) Can she walk? PENELOPE (very alarmed) What? Can who walk? TODD (to Penelope) Livi. (back to phone) Do you think it’s just a ploy? Penelope turns off the music. PENELOPE What’s wrong with Livi? TODD Nothing. Her ankle. PENELOPE She can’t walk on it? TODD (to Penelope) She doesn’t want to go to gymnastics. PENELOPE How badly does it hurt? TODD (into phone) What’s your read on it, Sandra? Oh. Is she near the phone? Tell her Daddy wants to talk to her. (he waits) Oh she does? What do you know. Alright. Thanks, Sandra. See you later. Todd ends the call. 26.

PENELOPE What? Is Livi okay? TODD She’s fine. She was just trying to get out of gymnastics. PENELOPE How do you know if she’s really hurt or not? TODD She’s fine. She’s going now. PENELOPE I do think something’s wrong with her ankle. She’s been complaining about it lately. And not just when she has to go to gymnastics. Penelope and Todd don’t notice Meg putting her clothes back on. TODD Penelope, she’s fine. She’s going to gymnastics. PENELOPE Todd, I don’t want her injuring her ankle further. TODD She’s not injured. Penelope gets up, goes to her bag and pulls out her cell phone. TODD What are you doing? PENELOPE I’m going to call Sandra. TODD I just hung up with her. I told you. She is fine. She is going to her gymnastics class. No one is forcing her. PENELOPE Why did she call you and not me anyway? TODD Because you told us you would be unreachable. PENELOPE Oh. Right. 27.

Meg is now fully dressed. She walks over to Penelope, gives her a nice kiss and starts walking toward the door. MEG I’m going to let you two work this out. PENELOPE Meg. MEG I’ll talk to you soon. PENELOPE Meg. Stay. Meg looks at Penelope, considering. Perhaps the cello can help her decide. MEG (looks at her, somewhat distressed) I... I’m gonna go. Call me. Penelope Wait! Meg leaves. Penelope and Todd stare at the door, both realizing that their tryst has just walked out the door. Neither move. They just stare at the door with cell phones in hand. They look at each other for a moment, then back at the door. Penelope smiles weakly at Todd. TODD Bummer. PENELOPE Yeah. TODD Interesting new side of you. PENELOPE New side? 28.

TODD You know what I mean. (walking to her) Want a back rub? PENELOPE Um... Sure. TODD Why don’t you lie down. PENELOPE Okay. Todd walks over to the speaker and clicks play. Penelope starts to lie down, then gets up and goes toward the table. TODD You okay? PENELOPE I want a sip of wine. (takes sip, puts glass down, sits) Todd... I... TODD What? PENELOPE I don’t think I can do this. TODD Do what? Penelope is crying. PENELOPE I want our marriage to work, but... I can’t suddenly make everything alright, make it... good. TODD Everything is good. Penelope turns the music off. PENELOPE How can you say that? TODD You know that I love you. 29.

PENELOPE I know you love me. In the way that you can love me. TODD What the fuck does that mean? PENELOPE I need more. I want more. TODD Oh you want me to go get a boob job now? (laughs at his own joke) Penelope looks at Todd. He has crossed a line. PENELOPE Fuck you. TODD (pissed) Fuck you. They are at a stand off. PENELOPE I need to be alone right now. (putting clothes back on) Could you go home please? There is a knock at the door. Penelope starts toward the door. TODD Great. Fucking perfect. Penelope opens the door to Meg. Their eyes lock. MEG Hi. PENELOPE Hi. TODD (looks at them) What’s this now? The women are only looking at each other. 30.

TODD (angry) Penelope. Penelope turns to look at him but doesn’t move. Todd angrily knocks the speaker off of the table and leaves. The girls are looking at each other. Todd’s leaving is irrelevant. MEG I had to come back. I was... Penelope closes the motel room door and kisses Meg passionately and emotionally. They make their way to the bed and begin to take off each other’s clothes as... Lights down and music up. Music fades and lights up on both girls on the bed, crying. PENELOPE (comforting) Shhhhh, shhhh. MEG (now comforting Penelope) I know, I know. Incredible. PENELOPE Amazing. They both begin laughing and crying at the same time. PENELOPE (suddenly) Shit. It’s bedtime. I promised Livi. MEG Can’t you call her? PENELOPE I promised her. I don’t want to leave. MEG So stay. PENELOPE I can’t just not come home. 31.

MEG I know. Neither can I. PENELOPE What do we do? MEG Call home. PENELOPE I guess. MEG Call. PENELOPE I don’t know what to say. What’s going to happen now? MEG Run away together? PENELOPE I... MEG Penelope, we don’t have to figure everything out today. We don’t have to rush in to anything. And we don’t have to rush out of anything. We both have families. We both get that. We are moms. We’ll figure it out. How to be together. PENELOPE You want to be with me? MEG I want to be with you. PENELOPE I want to be with you. MEG So let’s be together. PENELOPE It’s easier for you. MEG Why is it easier for me? PENELOPE I don’t know. MEG What? 32.

PENELOPE You know. MEG Not really. PENELOPE My marriage seems a bit more complicated. MEG They are all complicated. PENELOPE I don’t know what to do. MEG About what? PENELOPE Everything. I want to go home and see my children. I want to stay here and be with you. MEG We can see each other tomorrow. PENELOPE Not in this motel. Meg I’m getting to like this motel. PENELOPE I’ve got to get home to the girls. MEG Go. I’m fine with that. PENELOPE When do we see each other... MEG Lunch tomorrow? PENELOPE (small joke) Yes. Let’s do lunch. A cell phone rings. They look at each other, then both go for their bags. Lights down. End of Play.
