Family literacy Abstract This is a Family Literacy Program set up for second grade students and their families. The project includes thirty-six books and activities for the students to take home every Friday of the school year. The activities include both the student and the adults in the home. The picture books are both narrative and expository and written in a variety of genres. The book reviews are included for each book to show their quality. The adults are given support from the school through newsletters, a web page, family nights, and an initial home visit. The adults are encouraged to become part of the classroom by sharing a book with the class or by volunteering to listen to students read. The goal of the program is to get families reading and spending time together. This family time will help the child increase his or her learning. Parents will be playing the role of teacher and student as support is provided by the classroom teacher. The support includes planned activities with each book to help with comprehension. Reading strategies will be sent home for the parents to try with their children, and three times a year parents will attend a workshop (see Appendix A for strategy samples). A web page, and weekly newsletter will also be available to help educate and answer questions. There are weekly books and activities for thirty-six weeks of school. The activities are focused on gaining comprehension. The literature chosen has all been reviewed for appropriate grade level and quality in a variety of genres. The books are available through our Area Education Agency and the library due to financial reasons. I plan to work on getting grants for next year to purchase more books for the program. There is an incentive for students to read these books and others on their own. Students

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ministry and service of Sister Tutor Dorothy Davis Cook, Church of the Nazarene missionary nurse in the African country of Swaziland 1940 to 1972. The multi-dimensional, multi-task expanded roles manifested in her integration of Christian missionary and nurse were explored and her legacy identified. The most significant primary source for this study was Mrs. Cook herself. She was interviewed on three occasions and has provided personal documents, journals, and photographs.

Impert Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Susan Casteras Art History Northwest Impressionist artists are among the forgotten figures in American art history. Responsible for bringing Modernism to Washington and Oregon, they dominated the art communities in Seattle and Portland from about 1910 to 1928, remaining influential until the mid 1930’s. After describing the artists briefly, this dissertation summarizes and evaluates the slim historiography of Northwest Impressionism. Impressionism and Tonalism are contrasted in order to situate these artists within the broad currents of American art history. Six important artists who have not been studied in the past are each accorded a chapter that summarizes their educations, careers, and artistic developments. In Seattle, Paul Gustin, the early leader of the Seattle art community, was most closely associated with images of Mount Rainier. Edgar Forkner, a well established Indiana artist, moved to Seattle and painted numerous canvases of old boats at rest and still lifes of flowers. Dorothy Dolph Jensen, a latecomer, emphasized shoreline and harbor scenes in her work. In Portland, Charles McKim traded complete anonymity in Portland, Maine for the leadership of the Oregon art community, creating a variety of landscapes and seascapes. Clyde Keller produced an enormous output of landscapes over a long career that extended to California as well as Oregon.

The first article, "Tex Ritter's Early Days," provides information on the early life of Tex Ritter gathered through an interview with Earl Cariker, a biographer of Tex Ritter, and through newspaper articles. Earl Cariker describes the Murvaul (Texas) and Gary (Texas) communities in which Tex Ritter grew up. The second article, "Audie Hestilow," presents an interview with Audie Hestilow that was conducted by Lynn Burlbow. Hestilow, a barber, met Bonnie and Clyde one night while they were escaping from the police. While Audie Hestilow was a barber with the army in California, he became friends with Norma Jean Baker who would later be known as Marilyn Monroe. After the army, Hestilow established a barber shop in Austin (Texas) where he continues to work.
