The exhibition opened on November 8, 2016, with special preview performances from November 2 - 6, 2016 during the NYCF. Paranoia Man in a Rat Fink Room continues after the festival with events and discussions brought together by Storefront through February 18, 2017. The exhibition follows a tradition of spatial experimentation at Storefront where the boundaries between architecture, art, and the subject are dissolved into one continuous environment. The installation is a historical pastiche of urban and architectural experiences linked through a mise-en-scène comprised of three architectural environments - a Canal Street style kiosk filled with the leftover DVDs and VHSs from Jungle Video (a now defunct media superstore in Los Angeles); a comedy club partially inspired by the original Rat Fink Room (the world's first dedicated stand-up comedy club, which opened in 1963); and a bathroom that has been converted into surveillance headquarters that will keep audio/video recordings of the last days of Storefront. ABOUT PARANOIA MAN IN A RAT FINK ROOM Storefront for Art and Architecture is closing its doors for good*.

  • Brett Whiteley: on the Water
Brett Whiteley: On the Water Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre 16th November 2012 – 27th January 2013 Education Kit: Year 7 to 12 Contents: About this Exhibition Brett Whiteley: brief Artist Biography Process Curriculum Connections Art Historical and Critical Study Questions Artmaking Activities Cross-Curricular activities Glossary of Terms References Acknowledgements Images About this Exhibition Brett Whiteley was one of the most celebrated Australian artists of the twentieth century. This major exhibition Brett Whiteley: On the Water features over 60 works including drawings, paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures. A highlight being his last unfinished work, Unfinished Beach Polyptych: six imposing panels leaving the Brett Whiteley Studio for the first time in 17 years. Whiteley was an artist who had a deep fascination with nature. Two subjects were the mainstay of his work – the landscape and the nude – and with stunning virtuosity and outstanding draughtsmanship he rendered them with a sensuousness and unique lyrical quality. Brett Whiteley: On the Water explores this special relationship Whiteley had with these subjects, the deep blue of Sydney Harbour, the glistening beaches, and the pleasurable lifestyle of the bathers languidly basking in the sun. The images tell of sensory pleasures derived from total immersion in the surf, to the meditative mood of simply staring out to sea and gazing at the harbour from his beloved home in Lavender Bay. Brett Whiteley: On the Water is presented by Hazelhurst Regional Gallery in association with the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Brett Whiteley Studio and works from private and public collections. This exhibition is especially relevant given Hazelhurst Regional Gallery’s location in Sydney’s south, surrounded by beaches, bays and rivers nestled in the Royal National Park.

CINCINNATI OPERA PRESENTS METROPOLITAN OPERA STAR STEPHEN COSTELLO in AN EVENING OF BEL CANTO ARIAS Considered to be “among the world’s best tenors” (Daily Express, UK), Costello performs opera favorites at Memorial Hall Oct. 29 CINCINNATI—Cincinnati Opera proudly presents world-renowned tenor Stephen Costello in a special concert event this fall. On Tuesday, October 29, Costello will perform an evening of opera favorites in the beloved bel canto (Italian for “beautiful singing”) style, including excerpts from The Elixir of Love, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, and more. The concert reunites Costello with Cincinnati Opera after his acclaimed performances as Rodolfo in La Bohème (2010) and Alfredo in La Traviata (2012). The event also celebrates the recent release of Costello’s first solo album, A Te, O Cara, a collection of bel canto arias by Donizetti, Verdi, and Bellini on the Delos label. “A prodigiously gifted singer whose voice makes an immediate impact” (Associated Press), Stephen Costello stands “among the world’s best tenors” (Daily Express, UK). The Philadelphia-born artist came to national attention in 2007, when, aged 26, he made his Stephen Costello Metropolitan Opera debut on the company’s season-opening night. Photo: Merri Cyr Two years later, Costello won the opera industry’s prestigious Richard Tucker Award, and he has since appeared at many of the world’s most important opera houses and music festivals, including London’s Royal Opera House, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Washington National Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.
