But this passage really condemns the Isis Cult practiced in Rome during Paul’s age. The animals mentioned in Romans 1 correspond to the animal images of gods popular in the Isis cult, the unnatural sex practiced by the women refers to the behavior of Isis priestesses, and the immoral men refer to castrated male priests in the Isis cult.     A Priori Rules: Wittgenstein on the Normativity of Logic Peter Railton The University of Michigan Introduction Like many, I have long been uneasy with the category of the a priori. Perhaps I have simply misunderstood it. It has seemed to me, at any rate, that asserting a claim or principle as a priori is tantamount to claiming that we would be justified in ruling out alternatives in advance, no matter what the future course of experience might hold. Yet in my own case, I have felt it would be mere bluffing were I to lodge such a claim. I certainly could not discover in myself any sense of the requisite authority, nor even any clear idea of where to look for guidance in forming it. Contemplating widely-used examples of "propositions true a priori" did not remove my worry. For a start, there was the shadow of history. A claim like "logical truth is a priori" or "the attribution of rationality is a priori in intentional explanation" kept sounding, to my ears, as if they echoed "the Euclidean geometry of space is a priori" or "the principle of sufficient reason is a priori in physical explanation". And these echoes awakened just sort of the worry that had initially unsettled me: I would pronouce myself satisfied that certain claims, at least, were safe from the threat of contrary experience, just on the eve of developments in our on-going view of the world that would lead a sensible person to want to reopen the question. So I would emerge looking like the (perhaps apocryphal) fellow who claimed, in the wake of the great inventions of the nineteenth century, that the US Patent Office could now be closed, since all the really new ideas had been used up.

    oi.uchicago.edu PHILOLOGY DEMOTIC DICTIONARY PROJECT Janet H.Johnson This year, as for the past several years, the Demotic Dictionary staff concentrated on checking drafts of entries for individual letters in the Egyptian "alphabet" and preparing and entering computer scan copies of the actual Demotic words. The only student work­ ing on the project this year was Thomas Dousa, whose command of Egyptian and Greek and the extensive literature in both has allowed him to make major contributions to the checking and rewriting of first draft entries. Thanks to a very generous bequest from Professor and Mrs. George R. Hughes, we anticipate being able next year to hire a recent Ph.D. graduate as Research Associate to work full time on checking of draft and preparation of scans and copies. The checking and rewriting of first draft entries involves double checking of all in­ formation provided in the entry and the incorporation of several categories of informa­ tion that we decided to include after the first drafts had been written. Many of these categories are being added to provide social or cultural information as part of the "meaning" of a word. For example, whenever the "word" is the name of a deity, a refer­ ence is provided to every geographic location (e.g., a specific city or cemetery) with which the deity is associated in the texts of the corpus from which the Chicago Demotic Dictionary is being drawn. Similarly, whenever the "word" being discussed is the name of a geographic location, reference is made to all deities mentioned in the texts of our corpus in conjunction with that geographic location.

Windelband as Paradigm We can think that "problem-history"l is exclusively a name for one way of philo­ sophical historiography among others. As such it is a method that recounts the history of philosophy in terms of its problems, and not in terms of philosophical personalities or cultural epochs. In this understanding, problem-history proceeds with the naIve assumption that problems exist "in themselves", that they are merely repeated and manifested differently in different epochs. Plainly stated, this sounds both trivial and problematic. And if this reading is true then it is no wonder that problem-history is accorded little interest today, despite the fact that the classical authors of problem-history writing are still readily consulted. Apart from the fact that such writers are still being constantly exploited for re­ search purposes in the present, their works are granted no independent philo­ sophical value. This applies equally to the authors of these works: they are not considered as independent philosophers but "only" as historians.

They are a testimony of the everyday life of the ancient Egyptians for which remains have been found throughout all of the temples of Karnak. Continuous occupation from the First Intermediate Period until the Late Roman Period is well attested at different locations in the complex of Karnak. Settlements are easily recognizable by their use of brick, especially mud-brick. The artifacts and organic remains found during new excavations of settlements give us a good idea of the inhabitants and their daily life.

ARTICLE INFO Abstract Shemaa-nefer is the crocodile god who was mentioned at Esna temple Keywords: as “the son of goddess Neith”. His name means “the long and the good Shemaa-nefer; god” which agrees with the main figure of the god more than “the crocodile; Esna; Southern beautiful”. Shemaa-nefer was not only sacred at Upper Egypt. Neith. His name was found among the deities’ names “Semenouphis, Samanouphis” in some of the Greek texts from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. (JAAUTH) His name appeared on one of the papyrus which was found at Vol. 17, No. 2, Elephantine. Another papyrus found at Esna mentioned the deity’s (2019), name, but it is now in Chicago1. This research aims to; (1) shed light on PP. 15 -31. the deity Shemaa-nefer; (2) study the role of Shemaa-nefer at Esna; (3) study the relationship of Shemaa-nefer with the other deities. Introduction Esna tA-snj 2, iwnjt 3 is located on the West bank of the Nile, 64 km south of Luxor. This site was an important cultural center during the Ptolemaic period4. The temple of Esna dates to Ptolemaic and Roman times and was one of the last Egyptian temples erected in Egypt. It was dedicated to god Khnum along with other deities such as Mehet5, Menhyt6, Tefnut7, Sekhmet8, Nebtu, Neith9 and Heka10,11.The temple was built during the reign of Ptolemy VI Philometor and completed under Decius whose inscriptions included the last hieroglyphs sculpted in ancient Egypt12.
