  • The Medieval Origins of South Pennine Farms: the Case of Westmondhalgh Bierlow*
The medieval origins of south Pennine farms: the case of Westmondhalgh Bierlow* the medieval origins of south pennine farms by David Hey Abstract The scattered farmsteads of the Pennine foothills of south-west Yorkshire rarely offer visual clues to the antiquity of their sites. Most of their names are first recorded in the early modern period, yet if we examine the surnames that are associated with them we find that many were founded well before the Black Death. This is a much older settled landscape than at first appears. The importance of the hamlet as the basic unit of farming systems is emphasized, and evidence is provided for small arable townfields, divided into doles, and extensive moorland commons whose boundaries are marked by deep ditches that have wrongly been interpreted as linear defences from the Romano-British or Anglian period. Modern studies have provided us with a general understanding of how farms were created on the edges of moorland in different parts of England during the period of population growth between the twelfth and early fourteenth centuries. The pioneering work of Margaret Faull and Stephen Moorhouse on West Yorkshire, of John McDonnell on the North York Moors, of Angus Winchester on the Lake District, the northern Pennines and the Scottish Borders, and of Harold Fox on Dartmoor is well known.1 In recent years the late Richard Britnell and Brian Roberts have led a team in an ESRC-funded project on settlement and waste in the Palatinate of Durham, including the western High Pennines, where the extent of waste by the early fourteenth century differed little from today.2 Yet there is still much scope for local studies of the predominantly pastoral and weakly manorialized territories that characterized the gritstone moorlands and which differed considerably from, say, ‘the islands of cultivated land in a sea of waste’ on the magnesian limestone district of south-east County Durham.

THE NEWSLETTER OF THE SHEFFIELD GROUP OF THE RAMBLERS OCTOBER 20! The Sheffield Rambler Sheffield Ramblers AGM Date: Monday 12th November Place: The Friends Meeting House, St. James Street, (near the Cathedral) Time: 7.00pm start. Refreshments available beforehand. At this year’s AGM instead of having another good speaker we have invited a brilliant new band of singers and players named the "Clarion Call" to sing rambling songs new and old in the tradition of "rambling and singing". The band is solidly linked to the Ramblers which you will quickly realise when listening to them. They are not just entertaining, they can also be quite moving. Don't miss it! 2018 Sheffield Walking Festival Once again the Walking Festival was a great success with numbers taking part up to nearly 600, over 70 more than last year. It seems the word is spreading as quite a few participants came from outside the area. The festival itself ran for 10 days but this year Heritage Open Days – who run some of their events in con- junction with the festival - took place over both weekends instead of just one so perhaps that helped boost the numbers. Everyone taking part seemed to really enjoy it and we were blessed with some lovely days – though not all! The people on my walks all seemed very impressed with the fantastic views, especially from some of the edges we walked along but also with the great views of Sheffield from Houndkirk Road – perhaps a view we often just take for granted! The event at Bradfield Village Hall on 30th September, to celebrate the Festival, was also apparently a great success with lots of people visiting throughout the day, enjoying the music and the talks.

The proposal would have a greater impact on the openness of the Green Belt than the existing development, by virtue of some of the existing development having blended into the landscape. The spatial and visual impact of the proposal would be harmful to the openness of the Green Belt and the special character of the Loxley Valley. 2 The Local Planning Authority considers that the proposal amounts to an unsustainable form of development, as set out in Paragraph 8 of the National Planning Policy Framework, due to the lack of available local services integrated into the development and inaccessibility to local services due to the nature, location and topography of the site and its surroundings.

  • Loxley Valley Design Statement
Policy Committee Item 6.5 6 February 2004 App 1 Chief Executive Page 1 APPENDIX 1 EXTRACTED VERSION OF THE LOXLEY VALLEY DESIGN STATEMENT The Loxley Valley Design Statement Extract showing matters relevant as SPG in the Peak District National Park Policy Committee Item 6.5 6 February 2004 App 1 Chief Executive Page 2 Design Issues in the valley This document will look in turn at the general landscape, at the human settlements within it, and then at the manmade features that give local character to the buildings within those settlements. We will consider what makes our locality special, and how good design can keep it special if and when there is change. We believe this is the first time the Loxley Valley has been described and defined in such detail. This reflects the knowledge and passion of the many people who took part in the local “workshops” we held during our consultations. Landscape Design The landscape setting The landscape of the Loxley valley is special. We want to retain it, and if possible improve it. But we also support change if it does not impinge on the landscape, views or natural resources. The landscape ranges widely. Undeveloped land includes pasture and arable fields, woodland, heath and moors. Water features include the river, streams, reservoirs and old industrial millponds.
