Heritage Numbers WAKEFIELD TRINITY RLFC HERITAGE NUMBERS 1895-2016 HERITAGE NUMBERS … The Story Initial Ideas Our initial ideas for the heritage numbers came about a couple of years ago (approx. 2012), after seeing the success of Queensland in Australia, with Warrington being the first English club to follow suit. Next Step Tremendous work had been carried out by a group of rugby league historians in the 1970s (RL Record Keepers’ Club) who pooled their knowledge, and attempted to record every game in the first one hundred years of rugby league (1895-1994). Trinity’s were completed and fortunately we acquired the records to every Trinity game, and players, since 1895 The First 100 Years The teams for the first one hundred years of Trinity’s rugby league days (1895-1994) were recorded and each new player to make his debut noted. On the very first game there were fifteen (numbers 1-15) and each debutant after this was given the subsequent number, in position order (full back, winger, centre etc.). This was checked, double-checked and triple checked. By 1994 we had found 1,060 names. The Next 20 Years … Part 1 The next twenty years, to the modern day, were a little more difficult but we researched the Trinity playing records through the excellent ‘Rothman’s Year Books’ written by the late Raymond Fletcher and David Howes. These books started in 1981 and finished in 1999. Again, each debutant was given the next heritage number The Next 20 Years … Part 2 After the ‘Rothmans’ books ceased publication we used the yearbooks published by ‘League Express’, which also noted every new player, signed throughout the season. By the end of 2013 we had found every Trinity player to have played first team rugby league Re-checking The next step was to re-check that all the names had been noted, none had been duplicated or any had been missed out. There had been various mistakes in the initial records from 1994, some that could not have been helped (spelling mistakes, brothers with the same name etc.) Wakefield Library Archives The next process was to make sure that the ‘Record Keepers Club’ records were correct. Regular visits to the Archives department at Wakefield Library saw us digest the old Wakefield newspapers, including the Wakefield Express and Wakefield & West Riding Herald that listed the weekly teams every Friday morning. This also assisted us in finding Christian names for all players Huddersfield University Archives The above was then followed up with visits to Huddersfield University Archives department, which has a great rugby league collection. We researched the RFL’s players records to confirm all the names that had been found The Final Steps Some of the 1990s yearbooks did not list the teams per game, only the names of debutants so further visits to the library finalised the order of all debutants over the last twenty years. The process was complete by July 2013, and added to with each new debutant (complete to September 2015) Trinity Publications The Trinity programmes over the years have also been useful sources of information, especially the excellent ‘Trinity Programme’ of the 1960s, written by John Lindley and David Armitage. Their subsequent books, ‘The Dreadnoughts’ (1960) and ‘100 Years of Rugby’ (1973) have also been worn thin with constant reference Heritage Numbers notes / criteria ---------------------- Players are listed in debut order and allocated debut heritage numbers Those making their debuts in the same match had their place determined by positions (full back, winger, centre etc.) If players have made more than one debut (e.g.: Neil Fox, Ian Brooke, David Topliss, Gary Price, Danny Kirmond etc.), they retain their initial number for their second debut Players listed as AN Other or Triallist have not been issued a number, unless they subsequently signed for the club Only first class matches are included, not friendly matches. The years noted after each name signify their debut year to last game 1890s 52. Reg Shean (1896-97) 102. Tommy Dixon (1901-07 1. Harry Kershaw (1895-1900) 53. William Hale (1896-1904) 103. We enjoyed a very successful partnership with Rugby AM and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal on the Ride to Rio challenge; and we secured grants from Curious Minds and Cape UK to support club foundations to deliver some life-affi rming experiences for young people in their communities via a Cultural Welcome Partnership programme. THE ACTION KICKS OFF THIS SATURDAY NIGHT Sir Peter Leitch Club Newsletter RLWC 2017 24th October 2017 It’s 4 days until the Kiwis play # their first game of the 2017 RLWC 193 Back The Kiwis By Enjoying Lunch By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan E ARE only days from the kick-off of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, with Australia and England W– in what will be a hell of a match - doing the honours on Friday night. Of course the Kiwis take on Samoa on Saturday night at Mt Smart, and that one should be a good game too. League legend Olsen Filipaina is taking the ball out, which is pretty cool given he has represented the Kiwis and Samoa. The game I am looking forward to is the Kiwis v Tonga in Hamilton, because there is not going to be a lot of love lost when those two sides meet, after everything that has gone on. Before a ball is kicked I have the Kiwis lunch at the Ellerslie Events Centre to look forward to on Friday. When Pete asked if I would take it on with Gordon Gibbons and Tony Feasey, I foolishly said yes, not want- ing to let Pete down. But in truth Gordon has been amazing and we have an incredible line-up of Kiwis greats taking to the stage, and players with a long history of World Cup and test glory in attendance. I have been to several of Peter’s Kiwis lunches and enjoyed every one of them.

I nearly always think about him when the Bulldogs are set to take on Parramatta. There isn’t a year goes I by when I don’t have at least one conversation about this player who, on one fateful September day in 1998, saw his career come to an end. He set a new benchmark for horrid individual performances on a rugby league fi eld. Now, to give Carige’s performance context, it is important to understand the simmering hatred between Canterbury and Parramatta at the time. The Bulldogs and Eels were wild rivals in the 1980s but that was an enmity built out of style and the pursuit of superiority rather than any underlying natural disposition of dislike between the two outfi ts. These days, the rivalry remains strong but it is a very one-sided deal with little respect given to the Eels by the Bulldogs faithful. But, in the 1990s, the feud was hot – the hottest feud in the game.

FOUNDED ON COAL A HISTORY OF A COAL MINING COMMUNITY: THE PARISH OF ST. MATTHEW HIGHFIELD AND WINSTANLEY by RAY WINSTANLEY and DEREK WINSTANLEY with a foreword bv Rev. W. Bynon Copyright R. & D. Winstanley, 1981 Published by R. Winstanley, 22 Beech Walk, Winstanley. Printed by the Supplies Section of the Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council (Administration Department) FOREWORD When walking or driving along Pemberton Road and Billinge Road, you are aware of the new housing estates and the rush of traffic. It is not difficult to imagine that the Parish of Highfield is one of the new suburbs created to absorb the workers of Lancashire and Merseyside. The truth is very different as you will discover in the pages of this book. The history of this area can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086 A. D. and by far the most historic building is Winstanley Hall. As a legal parish we can only go back to 1910, but as a church we go back to 1867 when the Pemberton Colliery Church School was built. The name of Pemberton Colliery gives us a clue to the origin of a church on this site. The link between the Blundell family and the Church has given to this parish the schools, the cricket Field, the graveyard and the vicarage. The present church, completed in 1894, was the gift of Col. Blundell in memory of his wife, Lady Blundell. The Blundell family were generous benefactors to the parish. Although the physical area referred to in this book is that of the parish of St Matthew, this is the history not just of a church, but of a whole community.
