Kurashiki can be easily visited walking, start the exploration with an old merchant street, Honmachi (main street in Japanese language), venturing between small streets and shops of Bikan Historical Quarter. All the two-story buildings of this area have been preserved since Edo period, with black and white latticework patterns and ancient rooftops, typical of Kurashiki architectural style. Moving back to the central canal, you can ride a characteristic gondola tour of the city: the tour lasts 20 minutes costing like 5 $ each person. After the ride, on the west side of the canal there are two interesting points of interest: Shinkei-en, a small Japanese scenic garden, and Denim Street. Denim Street is full of retailers selling denim related products as local souvenir. All these products are made in Kojima, a small city birthplace of Japanese denim located 17 km south of Kurashiki. If you like temples and shrines, from Kanryuji temple you will also enjoy a panoramic view of the city. All Kurashiki points of interests are close to each other, so half a day is enough to visit this small town. A little hungry since is almost lunch time, get back to Kurashiki station and move to Okayama using JR Hakubi or San-yo lines (included in JR pass) for a good lunch. Okayama 岡山市 Facing Seto Inland Sea, Okayama has fresh seafood every day that you can taste on both Barazushi, scattered sashimi and vegetables over rice, or Hinase Kakioko, a special okonomiyaki with oysters. Okayama is also house of a tasty dish called Demi-Katsudon, a pork cutlet with demi-glace sauce. This is slightly heavy for lunch though! Lastly, since Okayama’s mascot is Momotaro, a boy born from a peach that fights demons and eats a lot of Kibi-dango, this sticky rice dumplings snack is very common in the city. www.onigiro.com Copyright © 2020 Onigiro. All Rights Reserved With the stomach filled, head to your hotel for check-in (take your time to rest a little if you need to) before heading to Okayama main point of interest, Korakuen garden. This garden is one of the top 3 in Japan: at the entrance, buy a combined ticket for garden and castle, so you can also get a panoramic view of Korakuen from the castle’s highest floor. The garden visit takes about 2 hours, with food stalls settled inside in August, ready for the summer night openings. Once you have done with the garden, head to “Black Crow” castle through Yuejian Bridge, from which you can take pictures of the castle from a unique angle, perfect for Instagram. Visit the castle to the top floor to take some panoramic pictures of the area. When the sun starts going down, illumination lights up both around the castle and inside the garden. Move back for a night visit of the garden, a completely new experience thanks to all those lights. For dinner, enjoy the food stalls and eat everything in this calm garden among local people. 13 August Hiroshima 広島市 From Okayama station, take Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen train to Hiroshima station (1 h, included in JR pass). Try to get to Hiroshima before 9:00 a.m. because there are many things to see in this city. Start walking west toward Hiroshima castle (1.5 km), passing in front of the beautiful Shukkei-en garden (visit scheduled after lunch). To save energies and time you can take a taxi. After a short castle visit, move south heading Hiroshima Peace Memorial Dome (1 km) to see the sadly iconic monument, symbol of this city. Walking through the Memorial park you will reach Peace Memorial Museum, whose visit takes about 1.5 hours and will be emotionally challenging with all victim’s stories. For lunch, there is a plate that you can taste only here, Hiroshimayaki: it’s a version of okonomiyaki divided into layers, full of cabbage and delicious ingredients that you will remember forever. www.onigiro.com Copyright © 2020 Onigiro. All Rights Reserved Hiroshima is full of small restaurants to try this dish and everyone has its own version. The most famous destination to try it is Okonomimura, a building with tens of different restaurants. Since this building is very famous also among locals, you should get there between 12:00 and 12:30 or you might encounter some queue. After lunch, you can take a taxi to Shukkei-en scenic garden, whose visit takes about 1 hour. The garden has a beautiful central pond with a stone bridge and many panoramic viewpoints. Inside the garden is also present a big Ginko tree, one of the few trees that survived the atomic bombing. If the weather is too hot and you are tired, skip this garden and move on to Hiroshima station. After the garden, head east for 500 meters to reach Hiroshima station and move to Yanai station with JR San-yo line (included in JR pass), to enjoy your first summer festival of this trip in Japan. Yanai 柳井市 Yanai is a small and quiet city that, as well as many Japanese cities, fires up during Obon festivities. Yanai festival extends on different days, check a past festival schedule for more info. Today, festival starts at 16:30 with some small events, but the biggest ones take place from 18:00, so you have time to do hotel check-in. Before the festival main event, you can have a pleasant walk around White Walls district, with tens of small local shops and hundreds of Goldfish lanterns pending on the walls. Yanai local product is a double fermentation soy sauce, Kanro Shoyu, invented around 1800: in this central district, you can find breweries like Shigeeda or Sagawa still producing this unique souvenir. Starting from 18:00 until 20:45, you can enjoy Goldfish Nebuta main event, with processions of goldfish shape festive floats, lighted as the sun starts going down and pushed by locals. From 19:00, the city streets light up with hundreds of small handmade goldfish lanterns, a completely new version of this small city. To call the day, at 20:45 starts the Furusato Hanabi, a big fireworks show along the river. The best spot to see the fireworks is Osanpokoen, signed on our interactive map and on the event schedule pdf. www.onigiro.com Copyright © 2020 Onigiro. On 1950, a typhoon destroyed the bridge, but locals rebuilt it with same shape but more resilient materials. From Yanai station, take JR San-yo line to Iwakuni station and then JR Gantoku line to Kawanishi station (1 h), both included inside JR pass. From here, walk 1 km north along the river to reach Kintai Bridge. Take pictures from both sides of this unique style bridge before moving towards Iwakuni castle, up on the hill. To get up there, use Iwakunijo ropeway and then keep walking up for 300 meters. This road is challenging during summer, but up from the castle you can take panoramic pictures of the city. After the visit, walk your way back to Iwakuni station using the same route, or taking a taxi if you are tired. On the way back, have lunch with Iwakuni local food: Iwakunizushi, a pressed sushi made by layering rice, lotus roots, shiitake mushrooms, and thin threads of fried eggs into large, square-shaped wooden molds. Fukuyama 福山市 Back on tracks, use JR San-yo line to reach Hiroshima station, and then change with JR Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen line until Fukuyama station (2 hours, covered by JR pass). Make the check-in at your hotel, rest a bit and get ready to sweat to the next Japanese festival! Fukuyama matsuri takes place on August 14, with Iroha-maru Yosakoi dances, and 15th, with big firework display.
