The Global and the Vernacular
THE GLOBAL AND THE VERNACULAR THE APPROPRIATION OF TRANSNATIONAL CULTURAL IMAGERY AND THE RECONSTRUCTION OF CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN THE REALM OF CONTEMPORARY KOREAN POPULAR MUSIC HYUNJU PARK Department ofMedia and Communications, Goldsmiths College, University of London Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D. ) (C HYUNJU PARK 2003 Li'&. J ABSTRACT This thesis examines theoretical debates about cultural appropriation and postmodern plurality and hybridity in the formation of cultural identities. This is approachedhere through a case study of how the multiplicity of national and cultural identities are constructed in the processesof appropriating transnational popular musics, within the Korean context. On the basis of data obtained by interviewing contemporary musicians and young music enthusiasts, the thesis investigates the appropriation of global pop, mainly western pop music, within the non-Western context. In Part One, which encompassestheoretical and methodological frameworks, Chapters2 and 3 explore the recent discourse on cultural hybridity in post-colonial studies, and wider theories of popular music, identity and locality, from a global/transnational perspective. Methodological questions are discussedin Chapter 4. Part Two contains a case study: Chapters 5,6, and 7 present an interview-based study of the contemporary Korean popular music scene, where various musicians and young music enthusiasts consume and rework imported musics from a variety of positions. Some musicians are concerned with national cultural identity and attempt to incorporate traditional Korean elements into Western musical genres;other musicians show a large degree of cosmopolitanism; and young hip hop music fans articulate their identities, through the contrasting and differentiated consumption of transnationalmusical products. -
4. Film As Basis for Poster Examination
University of Lapland, Faculty of Art and Design Title of the pro gradu thesis: Translating K-Horror to the West: The Difference in Film Poster Design For South Koreans and an International Audience Author: Meri Aisala Degree program: Graphic Design Type of the work: Pro Gradu master’s thesis Number of pages: 65 Year of publication: 2018 Cover art & layout: Meri Aisala Summary For my pro gradu master’s degree, I conducted research on the topic of South Korean horror film posters. The central question of my research is: “How do the visual features of South Korean horror film posters change when they are reconstructed for an international audience?” I compare examples of original Korean horror movie posters to English language versions constructed for an international audience through a mostly American lens. My study method is semiotics and close reading. Korean horror posters have their own, unique style that emphasizes emotion and interpersonal relationships. International versions of the posters are geared toward an audience from a different visual culture and the poster designs get translated accordingly, but they still maintain aspects of Korean visual style. Keywords: K-Horror, melodrama, genre, subgenre, semiotics, poster I give a permission the pro gradu thesis to be read in the Library. 2 목차Contents Summary 2 1. Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: an Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world. -
Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000S Films a Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 46.2 September 2020: 217-245 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.202009_46(2).0010 The North on Southern Screens: Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000s Films A Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) Bonnie Tilland East Asia International College Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Korea Abstract South Korean films that address North Korean themes have changed in the decades since South Korea’s democratization. Whereas films in the 1990s presented North Koreans as villains, by the 2000s most films took a more nuanced approach, presenting North Koreans as complex people with the potential to adapt in South Korean society. This paper analyzes three films from the mid-2000s dealing with North Korean issues (A Bold Family [2005], Over the Border [2006], and Welcome to Dongmakgol [2005]) in the context of the South Korean political landscape and North-South relations at the time. The paper argues that mid-2000s films represent a transitional point in the filmic depiction of North Koreans in South Korean film, opening up possibilities of hybridity in Korean identity. These films exhibit an almost ethnographic impulse to document everyday life, and as such contribute broadly to a visual anthropology of North-South Korean relations. South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation
The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation By Jisung Catherine Kim A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair Professor Mark Sandberg Professor Elaine Kim Fall 2013 The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation © 2013 by Jisung Catherine Kim Abstract The Intimacy of Distance: South Korean Cinema and the Conditions of Capitalist Individuation by Jisung Catherine Kim Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media University of California, Berkeley Professor Kristen Whissel, Chair In The Intimacy of Distance, I reconceive the historical experience of capitalism’s globalization through the vantage point of South Korean cinema. According to world leaders’ discursive construction of South Korea, South Korea is a site of “progress” that proves the superiority of the free market capitalist system for “developing” the so-called “Third World.” Challenging this contention, my dissertation demonstrates how recent South Korean cinema made between 1998 and the first decade of the twenty-first century rearticulates South Korea as a site of economic disaster, ongoing historical trauma and what I call impassible “transmodernity” (compulsory capitalist restructuring alongside, and in conflict with, deep-seated tradition). Made during the first years after the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the films under consideration here visualize the various dystopian social and economic changes attendant upon epidemic capitalist restructuring: social alienation, familial fragmentation, and widening economic division. -
Three Talks on Minjung Theology
THREE TALKS ON MINJUNG THEOLOGY HYUN Younghak The three talks on Minjung Theology that follow below were submitted to INTER-RELIGIO for publication by Paul Sye, former Director of the Institute for the Study of Religion and Theology in Seoul (see NEWS AND COMMUNICATIONS), and are reproduced here with the author’s permission. They were originally delivered on April 13, April 20, and November 4, 1982, at the James Memorial Chapel of the Union Theological Seminary in New York. After several frustrating attempts to edit the pieces independently of consultation with the author, it was decided to print them here just as they appeared in the original text. We think you will agree that the unpolished edge of Dr. Hyun’s language reflects the sense of immediacy as well as the sense of distance that minjung theologians feel in attempting to reach a western audience. Although the context is clearly Christian and missionary, the problems it raises suggest an altogether different base for interreligious dialogue with the Korean minjung than the ones traditionally generated from within academic circles. Lecture 1: MINJUNG: THE SUFFERING SERVANT AND HOPE PROLOGUE As I was preparing the lectures to be delivered at Union Theological Seminary as a Henry W. Luce Visiting Professor of World Christianity, and now as I stand in my Sunday best in from of you to deliver one of the lectures, I am overwhelmed by a feeling of myself being ridiculous and also looking ridiculous. There are three reasons for this: 1. The chair of this particular professorship appears so big and high that I have a feeling that my feet are dangling over the seat. -

Abstract The focus of this dissertation is to show how the media of contemporary Korean popular culture, specifically films, are transformed into “hybrid cultural forms” through the practice of genre transformation. Since the early 21st century, South Korean popular culture has been increasingly spreading across the globe. Despite its growing attention and popularity, Korean pop culture has been criticized for its explicit copying of Western culture with no unique cultural identity. Others view the success of Korean media, both its creative mimicry and its critique of the West, as a new hybrid form that offers the opportunity for reassertion of local identity as well as challenging the global hegemony of the West. -
