Nupo Temporary Shelter Profile March 2016 Verified Popula%on - March 2016 Background Nupo camp was established in 1997 to accommodate refugees 11,310 * fleeing offensive aacks from Myanmar. It is the smallest and the most remote camp in Tak Province. Populaon profile In March 2005, a number of refugees recognized under UNHCR's Gender mandate in Mae Sot were transferred to Nupo camp, in line with Female 51% Male 49% the policy of the Royal Thai Government that all recognized refugees from Myanmar must reside in the temporary shelters. It has a Governance surface area of 158 acres (0.64 sq.km.). The Ministry of Interior (MOI) is responsible for administraon in nine camps. Nupo Camp Commander is the Deputy District Officer of Umphang UNHCR Ac%vi%es District. In accordance with MOI regulaons, admission to the camps and access to asylum in Thailand is the responsibility of the Provincial Admission Boards (PAB). At the end of 2005, the Tak PAB, assessed the status of “persons fleeing fighbng” and “persons fleeing polibcal persecubon” for thousands of asylum seekers in Nupo. Between 2005 and 2006 the PAB recognized virtually all of the unregistered populaon at that bme. With UNHCR support in 2012, RTG started conducbng a "Fast Track" procedure that provides access to the PAB to the unregistered camp residents in the nine temporary shelters if they are immediate family members of those who were already reseSled and/or of the registered camp residents who are in process of reseSlement. There have also been submissions for persons with protecbon and medical concerns. This is not a general registraon PAB exercise and the condibons are strict.
