The results of a herpetofaunal survey of Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa are presented here. Combination of visual encounter survey methods and standard Y-shape trap arrays were used to conduct the survey. A total of 26 species (eight amphibians and 18 reptiles) were recorded, representing 29 quarter-degree grid cell records, of which 62% represented the first records for these units. Furthermore, we document the presence of three species of snakes (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia, Hemachatus haemachatus and Homoroselaps lacteus) for the first time for the whole degree square of 3028 (approx. 100 km2). This study highlights the need to survey poorly known regions to enable us to understand and document the full distributional extent of species. We also discuss the impact of uncontrolled fires on the absence of grassland specialised species during our survey. Keywords. CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage. -

This supplement to Veld & Flora focuses on other “biodiversity” (birds, mammals, insects, etc.) rather than just our core interest, which is “plant diversity”. It is an example of BotSoc embracing the change which Dr Bruce McKenzie has come about since SANBI replaced its predecessor Executive Director, BotSoc the National Botanical Institute (NBI) and also supports one of the principles contained in BotSoc’s Centenary Charter (see Veld & Flora, March 2006) which outlines our commitment to supporting SANBI and its mandate. This editorial briefly reviews publication trends in the scientific component (Fig. 1). Four of these are national museums: Ditsong journals published by South African museums that are solely or National Museum of Natural History (Pretoria), National Museum – partially focused on the natural sciences. It is based on an oral Bloemfontein, KwaZulu-Natal Museum (Pietermaritzburg) and Iziko presentation given at the conference of the International Council of South African Museum (Cape Town). Five are provincial museums: Museums – South Africa (ICOM-SA) in August 2014. The conference McGregor Museum (Kimberley) and a cluster of four museums was hosted at the Durban Natural Science Museum Research Centre (making up the ‘Eastern Cape Provincial Museums’) in the Eastern during 26 - 27 August and its theme was “Museum research in South Cape Province: Amatole Museum (King Williams Town), East London Africa – relevance and future”. -

BASIC DATA Organization Legal Name: University of Stellenbosch Project Title (as stated in the grant agreement): Effective Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles in the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor (SCARCE) Implementation Partners for this Project: University of Stellenbosch, Western Cape Nature Conservation Board (now CapeNature), Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, Environment and Conservation, South African National Parks, Mountain Club SA Kontreitoere was co-opted as partner in 2004 Project Dates (as stated in the grant agreement): January 1, 2004 – March 31, 2008 Date of Report (month/year): May 2008 II. OPENING REMARKS Provide any opening remarks that may assist in the review of this report. In 2005, the South African Reptile Conservation Analysis (SARCA) was initiated. Data generated by SCARCE were incorporated in the SARCA database. SARCA’s collated database for South African reptiles is accessible on their website (http://sarca.adu.org.za/) in the form of quarter degree distribution maps for all species. The new Red Data Book for Reptiles that is presently being compiled is based on this database. Contribution to SARCA’s national database therefore replaced the original aim of SCARCE to compile a database for the GCBC alone as this would have led to unnecessary duplication. III. ACHIEVEMENT OF PROJECT PURPOSE Project Purpose: To increase the understanding of and appreciation for the important ecological role that amphibians and reptiles play in the various ecosystems of the CFR, and particularly those of the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor. Fauna and Flora Specialist Ecological Study Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment for the Proposed Development of the Impofu East Wind Farm Near Oyster Bay, Eastern Cape Province: EIA PHASE REPORT ECOLOGICAL SPECIALIST SERVICES Assessment/Management/Research Prepared for Aurecon South Africa (Pty) Ltd on Behalf of Red Cap Impofu East (Pty) Ltd By 3Foxes Biodiversity Solutions (Pty) Ltd February 2019 i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Red Cap Energy (Pty) Ltd has appointed Aurecon South Africa (Pty) Ltd to undertake the required application for environmental authorisation process for the proposed Impofu East Wind Farm located near to Oyster Bay in the Eastern Cape Province. It is anticipated that the Impofu East Wind Farm would be comprised of up to 33 turbines of between 3-6MW each. The development is currently in the EIA Phase and Red Cap Impofu East (Pty) Ltd has appointed 3Foxes Biodiversity Solutions to provide a specialist terrestrial biodiversity Impact Assessment Study of the development site as part of the EIA process. Several site visits as well as a desktop review of the available ecological information for the area was conducted in order to identify and characterise the ecological features of the site. The Impofu East Wind Farm site consists largely of Tsitsikamma Sandstone Fynbos and Southern Cape Dune Fynbos with small patches of Southern Afrotemperate Forest in kloofs and along drainage systems. The majority of the Tsitsikamma Sandstone Fynbos within the site has been lost to transformation but there is a large tract of intact Southern Cape Dune Fynbos in the south of the site. The transformation of the area for agriculture has significantly affected the abundance and distribution of fauna at the site. -

Subsequently he took up employment with the Animal Demography Unit (ADU, University of Cape Town) as National Coordinator of the Southern African Frog Atlas Project (1997-2003) and as Project Herpetologist of the Southern African Reptile Conservation Assessment (2005-2009). Burger’s EIA activities as a faunal specialist started in 1996, and since then he has participated in about 85 different projects in collaboration with a variety of EIA consultancies. In 1998, he established a sole-proprietor business Sungazer. Signature…………………………… Date…………………………… II ABSTRACT The Dwarf Crag Lizard, Pseudocordylus nebulosus, is one of several relict ectotherm species associated with the mistbelt of the Cape folded mountain belt. Prior to this study, it was only known from a single locality in the Hottentots Holland Mountains. In this study, the distribution range and microhabitat preferences of P. nebulosus were determined and resource partitioning among the three melanistic cordylids (C. oelofseni, P. capensis and P. nebulosus), co-occurring in this area, investigated. Using the locality where P. nebulosus was first discovered as centerpoint, surveys were conducted in all directions and the occurrence of all three melanistic species recorded. The previous known range of P. nebulosus, of only 0.04 km2, was extended to 11 km2. Of the three melanistic cordylids, P. nebulosus has by far the smallest range, completely overlapping with the ranges of both the other two melanistic cordylids. Pseudocordylus nebulosus was found to show a distinct affinity for water bodies such as mountain streams and seepage areas.
