July 6 — 19 Florence Summer School 2019 July 6 — 19 Florence Tutors: Lucy Bailey (Julius Ceasar) Philip Franks (The Two Gentleman of Verona) Christopher Luscombe (Romeo and Juliet) Introduction The Shakespeare In Italy Summer School has grown in reputation, since the programme was first established in 2014. This year's course will be in Florence at the British Institute, where we have been specially invited to run our school. For more information on the Institute go to www.britishinstitute.eu Florence, known as the 'Flower of Italy', home of Giotto and Ghiberti, Masaccio and Michelangelo, Dante and Donatello, was the cradle of the Renaissance. Our programme is open to anyone over the age of 18 and who is fluent in English. It gives participants a unique insight into the plays, dramatic styles and techniques employed, and the rare opportunity to bring the works alive with top class actors and directors. The focus of the workshops is practical rather than theoretical. Our tutors expertise is in putting Shakespeare's texts on their feet. Any participant who is reluctant to get up and take part is welcome to be a spectator. Our tutors this year are Lucy Bailey, Philip Franks and Christopher Luscombe. Em vez de tentar estabelecer qual a afiliação política de Shakespeare ou discutir se a peça tem uma postura reacionária ou revolucionária, este estudo, baseando-se principalmente em Anderson, Fernie e Gil, conclui que tais montagens contemporâneas revelam ideias complexas sobre poder, liberdade e política.     An Interview with Michael Maloney An Interview with Michael Maloney Michael Maloney has played a wide range of classical roles over many years for some of the most famous theatre companies in the UK. At the Royal National Theatre, he has played Benjamin Britten and Lewis Carroll, as well as Hal in Henry IV parts 1 and 2. For the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Michael has played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet and Edgar in King Lear, under the Japanese director Yukio Ninagawa. He has also played Hamlet twice in various theatres around the country and at the Barbican, the second production of which was for Yukio Ninagawa once again. On film, Michael played Rosencrantz in Mel Gibson’s version of Hamlet. He has also worked on many occasions with Kenneth Branagh: he played Laertes in Branagh’s version of Hamlet and took the lead role in Branagh’s film In the Bleak Midwinter, about a group of actors putting on Hamlet in a church hall. He has also starred alongside Branagh as the Dauphin in Shakespeare’s Henry V and played Roderigo in Othello. Michael has appeared in lead and supporting roles in more than 150 television shows and 200 radio programmes. He is best known for his role in Anthony Minghella’s Truly Madly Deeply and more recently for his roles in the English films Notes on a Scandal and Young Victoria. The London Sinfonietta approached Tansy Davies to commission this work as the finale to its 50th Anniversary Season, signifying the ensemble’s commitment to creating innovative, forward-looking new music projects that carry important messages about life in the 21st century. Cave reunites the successful partnership of Davies and Drake following Between Worlds, their operatic response to the events of 9/11 which won the 2016 British Composer Award for Stage Work. Like their first collaboration, Cave tells a story of human suffering balanced by the healing force of the natural world. The central character is a man fleeing from the devastating effects of climate change, who is also on a quest for his lost child.

Michelle Terry, Artistic Director, said: “As the UK approaches its exit of the EU, our theatre will present a cycle of history plays, providing a unique opportunity to rediscover how Shakespeare perceived ‘this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England’.
