    SCHOOLS REVIEW 2015 by Douglas Henderson Wicket-keepers get a pretty raw deal as there are no statistics to show their keeping skills. However, when a wicket-keeper has far more more stumpings than catches, that really is something. George Lavelle, of Merchant Taylors’, Crosby, was still only in Year 10 but after three years in the XI he has taken 40 stumpings to 32 catches. He was captain of Lancashire Under-15s (champion county) and has won several awards. He would probably also have scored 1000 runs had he not being playing for his club on several Saturdays. Clearly a name to watch. Not many cricketers read the Laws of the game. The Spirit of Cricket is admittedly only a pre-amble rather than part of the actual Laws; in a woolly sense it is (part of the Laws) because Law 42 says that The responsibility lies with the captains for ensuring that play is conducted within the spirit and traditions of the game, as described in The Preamble – The Spirit of Cricket, as well as within the Laws. Anyway, the Spirit of the Game describes it as “cheating” or “sharp practice” to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one’s own side (my emphasis). Many people, admittedly of an older generation, can’t bear watching schools cricket any more because of the nonsense that nowadays goes with it: ludicrous noise, clapping, shouting, everybody called Buddy or Fella, wides applauded with cries of “well bowled”, catches greeted as if you’ve just won the football World Cup etc etc.

    2019 Season Report Once again, the OACC were blessed with a very exciting fixture card thanks to the efforts of our fixture secretary, Ollie Greaves. Fixtures – 28 Wins –11 Losses – 11 Draws – 3 No Results – 3 Emeriti Phillips Cup – Joint Winners Golf Day with OAGS – Winners Hampshire Hogs Cricket Club – Sunday 28 April 2019 – Warnford On a chilly April day, the Old Amplefordians trekked down to Warnford for the first game of the season. A few late arrivals forced the hand of the captain as he clearly lost the toss on purpose and the Hogs elected to bat first. After a slow start, the old guru with the ball, Bertie Woodhead, struck. A huge nick carried to Hewie Dalrymple behind the stumps and the Hogs were looking shaky at 7 for 1. Patch Faulkner then got into the act with some brilliant bowling dumfounding the Hogs top order and the Old Amplefordians were looking good with the Hogs dithering at 37-3. Unfortunately at this point there was a batting rally and a decent partnership ensued. This was put to an abrupt end by Tom Bromet and the game was back on. The captain then decided to throw the ball to a spinner well known on the circuit for having more chat than actual bowling prowess. I speak of course of the man/legend that is Roland Wood. He bamboozled the Hogs number 6 with a ball that had no flight, little pace and absolutely no spin whatsoever. This he went on to tell the field was known as the ‘Wood Special’.

    A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.
