WAYS AND MEANS RCCPC Brief History In the beginning were five men and one vision… In a historic series of preparative meetings in May 1985, Felipe Casing, Antonio Elumir, Manny Granada, Jacinto Jamero and Rey Sanggalang envisioned the Port Center of Cebu as a vantage ground from where a band of noble men shall rise by the name of Rotary, in a game of service to humanity. What followed was a marathon dash in establishing a Rotary Club in the Cebu Port District to obtain a charter from then District 3860 Governor Jose “Joe” Lardizabal whose term was to conclude very soon. On the forefront was Pepe Casing, a Cebu Fuente Rotarian. It was in the special day of June 6, 1985 when a charter was granted to a club that was christened a most befitting name: The “ROTARY CLUB OF CEBU PORT CENTER”. The newfound organization that was once a nucleus of five visionaries became a club of 34 gentlemen who convened charter members in the middle of June 1985 to bear witness to the first set of officers. Antonio “Jun” Elumir, who was then the Phil. Ports Authority Officer, was the Charter President. With him at the helm was Manuel “Manny” Granada, the charter vice-president, Jacinto “Boy” Jamero and “Rey” Sanggalang were the charter secretary and charter treasurer, respectively. These gentlemen who were the prime movers for the organization of our club were equally accorded those distinct and rare positions which can only happen once in a history of a club. Pepe Casing was honored with the venerable title of “Godfather”. RCCPC during 90’s 35th BIENVENIDO FALCON JR. • Patterns of Animal Utilization in the Holocene of the Philippines: a Comparison of Faunal Samples from Four Archaeological Sites
Patterns of Animal Utilization in the Holocene of the Philippines: A Comparison of Faunal Samples from Four Archaeological Sites KAREN M. MUDAR THE PHILIPPINE ARCHIPELAGO IS A SERIES OF TROPICAL OCEANIC ISLANDS located off the eastern edge of the Sunda Shelf While dramatically lower sea levels of 145-160 m during the middle and late Pleistocene uncovered the shelf and joined the Malay Peninsula and islands of Sumatra, Java, and Borneo into one land mass (Heaney 1985), this had little effect on accessibility to the oceanic Philippine Islands. Although relatively narrow water gaps, 12-25 km in width, existed between the archipelago and the Sunda Shelf at several times during the middle and late Pleistocene, the only major island that was connected to the mainland was Palawan,l which formed part of Sundaland during the middle Pleis tocene. Therefore nonarboreal mammalian fauna entering the archipelago either swam or were rafted to the oceanic islands. This isolation, combined with the relatively small size of the islands, has had a significant effect on the mammalian fauna, affecting both species diversity and morphology. The water barrier acted as a filter, allowing migration of small mam mals, particularly murid rodents, and discouraging migration of other taxa. Small insectivores, for example, have high metabolic requirements, which make it un likely that they would survive a lengthy rafting event. Other research on island biogeography (Heaney 1984) has shown that small isolated islands, in general, support a fauna depauperate in carnivores and large herbivores. In contrast to the 11 species of ungulates and 29 species of carnivores on Sumatra, the Philippines supports only three species of ungulates and two species of carnivores (Heaney 1984).

We will also be hosting a fellowship dinner that evening at Chikaan in Salinas Drive 6:30PM. The second club is RC Yotsukaido, our partner in the Community Scouts Project, which will be arriving this coming 31st January. We look forward to this visit hoping we can do new big projects with this club. We will ask Rotarian Shige Onda to brief us later of the itinerary so members can join us in these activities. In the effort to help the communities in the northern part of Cebu affected by the last Typhoon Ursula last Christmas, District 3860 thru Disaster Management Chair - Troy Bumagat, donated Php30,000.00 in addition to our fund-raising activity whereby raising the amount to more than Php600K already.
