Dear fellow Rotarians

Pit Senyor!

In celebration of 2020, Prosperity Celebration Inc., in cooperation with Il Corso Mall, City of Cebu, Cebu Landmaster Inc. and Virginia Food Inc. will present a Fireworks Competition on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6PM entitled Sky Symphony. It will showcase the pyrotechnic skills of companies from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. In this regard, PP Jonie Gesalem would

like to offer every RCC member a pair of VIP tickets for access to a premium spot in the mall to watch the pyrotechnics competition.

This month of January, we will be expecting two visiting Rotary Clubs. On Jan. 23, Thursday, 3 members of RC Okayama Marunouchi will be attending our luncheon meeting. We will also be hosting a fellowship dinner that evening at Chikaan in Salinas Drive 6:30PM. The second club is RC Yotsukaido, our partner in the Community Scouts Project, which will be arriving this coming 31st January. We look forward to this visit hoping we can do new big

projects with this club. We will ask Rotarian Shige Onda to brief us later of the itinerary so members can join us in these activities.

In the effort to help the communities in the northern part of Cebu affected by the last Typhoon Ursula last Christmas, District 3860 thru Disaster Management Chair - Troy Bumagat, donated Php30,000.00 in addition to our fund-raising activity whereby raising the amount to more than Php600K already. Congratulations RC Cebu for this new feat. We just donated on the first weekend of January 2020 materials for the six temporary classrooms in Población National High School, Daan Bantayan Cebu. We shall be donating as well to Paypay National High School to fix some of their classrooms. Another island community - Kinatarkan, shall also be receiving some of these assistance thru the effort of Rotarian

Bobong Castillo.

Lastly, this is to remind everyone that deadline for early bird registration of our DisCon 2020

at Cebu Grand Convention March 5-7, 2020 is on the 30th of January. To avail this P4,500 fee, enlist now. Our club will pay in advance for this registration. Michael P. Torres Thank You. Cheers! PRESIDENT, RY 2019-2020

January 2020

Something amazing happened in Vienna in October. A runner from Kenya named Eliud Kipchoge was the first person in history to run a marathon distance — 26.2 miles — in less than two hours.

For many years, experts thought this would be impossible. They said the human body was not capable of achieving this feat. But Kipchoge succeeded because he had an incredible team working with him. He had pacers who ran with him every step of the way, and people who made sure that he had the proper fuel and hydration. Every few miles, fresh runners were sent in to keep up the pace and help him reach his goal. Like Eliud Kipchoge, Rotary has a great support team as we approach the final mile in our marathon journey to rid the world of polio. So many amazing Rotarians have helped pace this effort along the way, donating their time and energies to bring us close to our goal. The World Health Organization has certified type 3 of the wild poliovirus as eradicated. This is big news! We have also gone three years without any wild poliovirus on the continent of Africa. It may soon be certified polio-free. …..continue next page

P a g e | 3 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020 The final mile of our journey is a difficult one. Pakistan and Afghanistan are great challenges for us — but we have met so many great challenges before. Every time a goal has seemed out of reach, Rotarians have stood together and answered the call.

This is no time to lose our focus or to think the race is already over. Can you imagine what would have happened to Eliud Kipchoge if all of the pacers had gone home for the final 2 miles? He might never have reached his goal.

It takes a special character to pursue a difficult task all the way to the end. These are the times that we need each other most. In the Tao Te Ching, Laozi wrote that the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step. But it also ends with one step. And those final steps take just as much courage as the first.

Let's make history, Rotary — the finish line is within reach!

Our first luncheon meeting of the calendar year went off to a good start. Sinulog was just around the corner, so we invited the Sinulog Foundation, Inc. Exec. Director Jojo Labella to be our guest speaker. Despite his busy schedule, we were honored by his presence. BTW 2 of our members PP Ricky Dakay and PE Ed Gaisano are the Pres. & Acting Chairman of Sinulog Foundation, and Trustee & member of the Sinulog Governing Board respectively.

We invited him to brief us about the activities being planned around Sinulog. He shared some aspects of Sinulog parade & competition that had changed this year as compared to previous years. Now on its 40th year, he credited the Board of Trustees for the great work they have done to not only preserve the event, but to make is prosper. Estimates for attendance this year is expected to hit 4 to 5 million people!

This year, we will see more contingents (26 vs. 22) taking part in the contest, the reintroduction of the carousel concept that allows each contingent to perform in a circular route rather than from one point to another. He also announced the return of many teams that had previously won and stopped taking part in the contest for one reason or another.

There appears to be a deliberate effort to expand the event by a series of first such as They also have 10 Barangay and 6 Lalawigan contingents, as well as a contingent composed of street children, and a drum and bugle competition. What’s more surprising is the 35-member strong contingent from Wongju, South Korea! Word is out too that our El Presidente might be showing up, and after several years’ absence, our city Governor Gwen Garcia will be taking part in the dance as part of the contingent from Alcoy. A kickoff to Sinulog includes Sinulog sa SRP where they will hold a regatta involving the “baroto” involving outriggers with 2 rowers and a sail as well as a fireworks competition

P a g e | 6 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020 on the 17th at Il Corso. PP Jonathan Gesalem is spearheading this year’s events that begin with the kick-off parade at Abellana on the 10th, the competition on the 17, the Baladjay also later that evening, the parade grand finale at Abellana on the 19th and the annual fireworks display at the later that evening. These events are often anticipated by Cebuanos so it’s heartening to hear that PP Jonie’s efforts are all behind these.

The presentation was brief as expected, but the Q&A portion took about as long! Some good news included no interruption of cellular phone signals and the relaxing of the no- street-party rule to within the 100-meter distance from the route. Road closures will still be in place but as PP Ricky reminded us all, The Sinulog is meant to be enjoyed and viewed on foot so be ready to walk. He also reminded everyone that the No-Drones policy is in place so no one should attempt to operate these along the route.

With 40 years of history, Sinulog will become more significant next year as we celebrate 500 years of the discovery of our country and the introduction of Christianity to the . With such a significant milestone, I do not have any doubt we haven’t seen the best of Sinulog yet. Who knows? Maybe we may even see a contingent from the Rotary CLUBS of Cebu taking part!

TIMELY NEWS FROM YOUR FOUNDATION THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

This year, The Rotary Foundation established the Rotary Disaster Response Fund. Districts that have been affected by a disaster can now use Rotary

disaster response grants to support their own projects or work with

established relief organizations to help their communities recover. Districts should work closely with officials and local groups to ensure the funding will meet a specific community need.
