This month of January, we will be expecting two visiting Rotary Clubs. On Jan. 23, Thursday, 3 members of RC Okayama Marunouchi will be attending our luncheon meeting. We will also be hosting a fellowship dinner that evening at Chikaan in Salinas Drive 6:30PM. The second club is RC Yotsukaido, our partner in the Community Scouts Project, which will be arriving this coming 31st January. We look forward to this visit hoping we can do new big projects with this club. We will ask Rotarian Shige Onda to brief us later of the itinerary so members can join us in these activities. A runner from Kenya named Eliud Kipchoge was the first person in history to run a marathon distance — 26.2 miles — in less than two hours. For many years, experts thought this would be impossible. They said the human body was not capable of achieving this feat. But Kipchoge succeeded because he had an incredible team working with him. He had pacers who ran with him every step of the way, and people who made sure that he had the proper fuel and hydration. Every few miles, fresh runners were sent in to keep up the pace and help him reach his goal. Like Eliud Kipchoge, Rotary has a great support team as we approach the final mile in our marathon journey to rid the world of polio. So many amazing Rotarians have helped pace this effort along the way, donating their time and energies to bring us close to our goal. The World Health Organization has certified type 3 of the wild poliovirus as eradicated. This is big news! We have also gone three years without any wild poliovirus on the continent of Africa. It may soon be certified polio-free. …..continue next page P a g e | 3 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020 The final mile of our journey is a difficult one. Pakistan and Afghanistan are great challenges for us — but we have met so many great challenges before. Every time a goal has seemed out of reach, Rotarians have stood together and answered the call. This is no time to lose our focus or to think the race is already over. Can you imagine what would have happened to Eliud Kipchoge if all of the pacers had gone home for the final 2 miles? He might never have reached his goal. It takes a special character to pursue a difficult task all the way to the end. These are the times that we need each other most. In the Tao Te Ching, Laozi wrote that the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step. But it also ends with one step. And those final steps take just as much courage as the first. Let's make history, Rotary — the finish line is within reach! Sinulog was just around the corner, so we invited the Sinulog Foundation, Inc. Exec. Director Jojo Labella to be our guest speaker. Despite his busy schedule, we were honored by his presence. BTW 2 of our members PP Ricky Dakay and PE Ed Gaisano are the Pres. & Acting Chairman of Sinulog Foundation, and Trustee & member of the Sinulog Governing Board respectively. We invited him to brief us about the activities being planned around Sinulog. He shared some aspects of Sinulog parade & competition that had changed this year as compared to previous years. Now on its 40th year, he credited the Board of Trustees for the great work they have done to not only preserve the event, but to make is prosper. Estimates for attendance this year is expected to hit 4 to 5 million people! This year, we will see more contingents (26 vs. 22) taking part in the contest, the reintroduction of the carousel concept that allows each contingent to perform in a circular route rather than from one point to another. He also announced the return of many teams that had previously won and stopped taking part in the contest for one reason or another. There appears to be a deliberate effort to expand the event by a series of first such as They also have 10 Barangay and 6 Lalawigan contingents, as well as a contingent composed of street children, and a drum and bugle competition. What’s more surprising is the 35-member strong contingent from Wongju, South Korea! Word is out too that our El Presidente might be showing up, and after several years’ absence, our city Governor Gwen Garcia will be taking part in the dance as part of the contingent from Alcoy.
