ACRA member contributions ensured that RADPAC’s visibility and impact on Capitol Hill remained strong and played a critical role in our efforts to mitigate Medicare payment cuts starting in 2021. RADPAC’s political efforts were equally effective ‐ In 2020, RADPAC achieved 94% success in primary elections as 134 of the 142 candidates supported won and achieved 96% success in the general election where 78 of the 81 candidates supported won their races. Although fundraising numbers were understandably down from previous years, RADPAC maintained its rank as the 4th largest physician PAC in the country. RADPAC also saw its highest percent of member participation within a state chapter since 2015 in Idaho, at 50%. This is truly a team effort, and we truly appreciate your confidence in RADPAC to serve as the political voice of radiology. With 2020 behind us, and work still ahead of us, we count on your continued support in 2021! Jacqueline Bello, MD, FACR Chair, RADPAC Board RADPAC Board Members Jacqueline A. • Metaphors of Love in 1946–2016 Billboard Year-End Number-One Songs
Text&Talk 2021; 41(4): 469–491 Salvador Climent* and Marta Coll-Florit All you need is love: metaphors of love in 1946–2016 Billboard year-end number-one songs https://doi.org/10.1515/text-2019-0209 Received June 25, 2019; accepted September 19, 2020; published online October 26, 2020 Abstract: This study examines the use of metaphors, metonymies and meta- phorical similes for love in a corpus of 52 year-end number one hit songs in the USA from 1946 to 2016 according to Billboard charts. The analysis is performed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and from quantitative and quali- tative perspectives. Our findings indicate that the theme of romantic love is prevalent in US mainstream pop music over the course of seven decades but shows evolutionary features. Metaphors of love evolve from conventional to novel with a notable increase in both heartbreak and erotic metaphors. Remarkably, the study finds that the two predominant conceptualizations of love in pop songs – which in a significant number of cases overlap – are the following: experiential, originating in the physical proximity of the lovers, and cultural, reflecting possession by one lover and showing a non-egalitarian type of love. Keywords: Conceptual Metaphor Theory; corpus linguistics; metaphor; pop music; romantic love 1 Introduction The central theme of a large number of pop songs is some facet of romantic love. Starr and Waterman (2003: 105–110, 199–200) noted this to be already the case in the Tin Pan Alley era in the USA of the 1920s and 1930s and the trend continued through the 1940s and 1950s, when the entertainment industry grew exponen- tially: “total annual record sales in the United States rose from $191 million in 1951 to $514 million in 1959” (Starr and Waterman 2003: 252).

This love is overdue. I don't remember pulling away, Why can't you show me what you wont say? Can't you feel my touch? Cuz it seems like u've been faking. Can you feel my heart? Do you know how much its aching? Don't you care what people say. Looks like we've been moving backwards. Nothing running through your head. Like a comatose lover, I can't get through to you. This love is overdue. Caught in the covers under your skin. I just want to make you feel something real again. Can you hear my voice? Does it seem like its been faded? Can you feel my heart? Do you know how much its aching? (Do you kno how much its aching) Don't you care what people say. Looks like weve been moving backwards. Nothing running through your head. Like a comatose lover, I can't get through to you. I don't want to lose you Comatose, comatmose, I don't want to lose you. Comatose, comatose, I don't want to lose you. Comatose. comatose. 'You're some punkin' Ms. Turano' Teacher at St. Rose's on national board By Harv Bishop Register Staff Most teachers get apples. Vicki Turano got a pumpkin. The large poster or a jack o'lantem painted and signed by her eighth grade students at St. Rose or Lima's School reads: " You're some punkin' Ms. Turano. Wow!" Turano recently was appointed to a two-year term Qn a national educators' board sponsored by the Carnegie Forum or Education. She is the only teacher from Colorado among the board's 64 members and its only Catholic school representative. She said the task or the group, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is to find ways to prepare students to cope with science and technology in the 21st century, boost the number or minority teachers, and design standards for a voluntary national teaching certificate. Hometown kid Turano sees her herself as a hometown kid made good. " When I looked at the resumes of the people on this board I was in awe," she said. " I thought, 'Should I be here?"' She said the board counts among its members national teacher union leaders, author-educators, a state legislator, and a candidate from the ill-fated, NASA-sponsored "Teacher in Space" program. The board's first meeting was in Washington, D.C. " When I arrived in Washington I was a little afraid," she said " I had only traveled in an airplane once before. I was in Washington alone I didn't know anyone. I usually don' t have any trouble talking, but I was afraid I wouldn't be able Vicki Turano said of her students, "I think they know I like each and every one of them."
