Miracles happen every day at St. Francis — whether in the Cath Lab or in one of our state-of-the-art ORs. Our highly trained physicians, nurses, and medical sta are experts in a multitude of specialties that have led to innovative treatments and remarkable recoveries. You are about to read some miraculous stories that embody the essence of why St. Francis has become a “go-to” destination for extraordinary care. 135893.indd 3 9/11/17 10:52 PM St Francis Hospital, The Heart Center®: A Message from the EVP & Chief Administrative Ocer Ruth E. Hennessey xtraordinary Care, Everyday Miracles, the theme of this year’s Annual Report, speaks to the heart of our hospital’s mission to provide state-of-the-art care for some of the most complex health needs in our community. Last year, St. Francis E continued to expand and enhance our role as the region’s premier provider of cardiac programs and services, even as it made important advances in providing patients with the highest quality orthopedic, neurovascular, and cancer care. St. Francis also continued to earn national acclaim for clinical care, patient safety, and patient satisfaction. Once again, we were the only hospital on Long Island to be nationally ranked in three adult specialties byU.S. News & World Report, and we were one of the only hospitals to earn an A grade for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, and we did so ten out of eleven times in the past five years. St. Francis also won several PRISM and Beacon awards for nursing excellence, while remaining one of the few hospitals to have received the top nursing award, Magnet Recognition, three consecutive times. St. Francis also continues to be the top hospital on Long Island for patient satisfaction, according to a survey published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In the end, there is no recognition more meaningful than the gratitude of our patients, and in this year’s Annual Report we highlight several remarkable patient stories that truly live up to the description of “everyday miracles.” These stories reflect the mastery of state-of-the-art technology, unrivaled clinical skills, and a determination to “never give up” on a patient. They are real-life examples of who we are and what we do at our best, and how we strive to treat each patient as if he or she is a member of our own family. The success of St. Francis Hospital’s mission would not be possible without the generosity of our friends, and I am truly grateful for their support. I would also like to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary as well as our physicians, nurses, sta, and volunteers, for their hard work and commitment to excellence. I would also like to thank Alan D. Guerci, M.D., CHS President and CEO, for his leadership. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend John Barres, for his spiritual leadership of Catholic health care on Long Island. 2 2016 St. Francis Hospital Annual Report 135893.indd 4 9/11/17 10:52 PM Catholic Health Services of Long Island: A Message from the President & CEO Alan D. Guerci, M.D. atholic Health Services made great strides last year toward achieving its goal to be the preferred health system on Long Island. Our path has been the pursuit of quality, the delivery of compassionate care, and the prudent stewardship of our C financial resources. I am pleased to report that our eorts were rewarded last year with favorable financial results that allowed us to invest in sta, new capital projects, and needed clinical programs. At St. Francis we are opening a new hybrid cardiac OR to accommodate increased volume in our most advanced cardiac procedures, and we are renovating and upgrading procedural rooms in our cardiac catheterization lab, one of the busiest in the nation. This past year we also launched a state-of-the-art neurointerventional program that, along with another center opening this fall at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, is a part of a system eort to provide advanced emergency stroke care to the Long Island community. Later this year, a new ambulatory surgery center will open its doors at 2200 Northern Blvd. in East Hills, a project developed in partnership with area physicians. Our focus on quality continues to be a top priority, and last year we had outstanding results.U.S. News & World Report once again ranked St. Francis the best hospital on Long Island and one of the fify best in the nation in Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, and Geriatrics. St. Francis had the distinction of being the only hospital on Long Island to be nationally ranked by U.S. News in three adult specialties. The Hospital is also one of the select few in the nation to have earned the coveted Magnet designation for excellence in nursing care three consecutive times. These achievements are hard won and are the result of a hospital culture that prizes teamwork, attention to detail, and always putting patients first. In this regard, I am especially grateful to Ruth Hennessey for her leadership in maintaining and enhancing this culture, and I would like to thank our physicians, nurses, sta, and volunteers for their enduring commitment to excellence. I also wish to thank the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, who are a daily inspiration to all of us. I would like to acknowledge the support of our benefactors, who make so many things possible, and for the guidance of the CHS Board and its Chair, Salvatore F. Sodano. Finally, I would like to thank our Bishop, the Most Reverend John Barres, for his spiritual leadership and his commitment to our vital health care ministry on Long Island. 135893.indd 5 9/11/17 10:52 PM The John Brancaccio Heart Valve Center t. Francis Hospital’s Heart Valve Center continues to be one of the busiest centers of its kind in the Northeast. Its pioneering physicians performed their 1,000th transcatheter Saortic valve replacement (TAVR) in 2016. Demand for the minimally invasive procedure keeps growing. Led by Co-Directors, George Petrossian, M.D., and Newell Robinson, M.D., initial research at St. Francis helped win FDA approval of the revolutionary device for patients too elderly or ill to undergo open-heart surgery. Now, the Center has embarked on the second phase of a major nationwide study that could expand this life-saving procedure to an even wider range of patients. Besides oering a one-stop destination for the treatment of aortic valve stenosis, the Center provides patients with several options for treating mitral valve disease. As a leader in mitral valve repair and replacement, St. Francis was the first hospital on Long Island to implant the MitraClip, a catheter-based device for patients with symptomatic degenerative mitral valve regurgitation who are too high risk for surgery. 4 2016 St. Francis Hospital Annual Report 135893.indd 6 9/11/17 10:52 PM IN THEIR 66 YEARS of marriage, Harvey and Rose Zaks have shared many hearfelt moments. But a Renewing revolutionary breakthrough in medicine has brought their hearts even closer together. Six months afer Their Valves Rose received a transcatheter aortic valve replacement or TAVR, her husband, Harvey, received the very same minimally invasive device. Under the expert care of George Petrossian, M.D, (right), Newell Robinson, M.D., (lef) and Kristin Pasquarello, P.A., both husband and wife are on the road to recovery.
