It’s a new venture, financed by donations and advertising. The focus is on Pelynt people, activities and interests as well as looking at events in a much wider area. We hope to produce two more issues in 2020 and six in 2021. More on adverts and articles on page 17. The important ‘Parish Magazine’ is incorporated with a new look and carries information about local Church and Parish events and a section on our Methodist Church. In the current world of uncertainty the number of events is obviously down but we are all hoping that later in the year things will pick up with more confidence. Articles written by readers are essential for a successful newsletter and we would love to hear from you about any topic that may interest others. We want to celebrate ordinary people who do extraordinary things. Doesn’t time fly when you are enjoying yourself? And time has certainly flown for me, not only recently during the Coronavirus pandemic when ‘church’ life has been oh so different. During the seven and a half years since David and I moved into The Rectory in Lanreath I became Priest in Charge of Pelynt and Lanreath plus Assistant Curate of Lansallos, Lanteglos-by-Fowey and Talland. During my incumbency we have formed those five parishes of seven churches into one ‘united’ benefice – at which point I became The Rector of The Benefice of Trelawny. Each of our parishes had historic links with the Trelawny family and as such we already had something to unite us. My thanks go to Sir John Trelawny for agreeing to our using his name and the family crest St Nun Pelynt in our correspondence. Since arriving in February 2013 it has been my privilege to accompany you through the highs and lows of life which has included 190+ funerals, 83 weddings and 81 baptisms, together with innumerable Sunday and weekday services, Carol services, Christingles, Church and village fetes, visits to schools, nursing homes, holiday clubs and a village panto. We’ve had fun days together with school visits (for teaching and ‘Experience Days’) and Nativity plays in Church – Oh Revd. Marilyn and Bishop yes, and teaching on baptism and Roy at her ordination. weddings when, on a couple of occasions, I ‘married’ Minnie and Ginger, characters from a children’s book, re-enacted by children from Pelynt Reception - each of these I hold very dear to my heart. When I announced my retirement earlier this year, we had no idea that Covid 19 was going to have such a devastating effect on church and parish life – sadly I was withdrawn from ‘public’ ministry for three months which meant I was unable to officiate at some Pelynt Panto. funerals and of course numerous weddings which have now been postponed until either later this year and even way into 2021! I write this on July 4th – Independence Day and the anniversary of my Ordination to the priesthood - the day the government announced ‘public worship’ may resume. Sadly it took a week for the government to announce official guidance around that opening, 4 4 then for the Church of England to issue their guidance and then, of course, the Church PCCs have had to undertake risk assessments, thorough cleaning and to debate what is feasible. For Pelynt the church will remain closed and the situation reviewed in September. For others within the Benefice there will be a gradual opening up – baby steps - to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing, but as I write, I know we will not be permitted to sing within our Marilyn and Dave. buildings! Although this is my farewell musing as your Rector, you are not getting rid of me quite yet as I will be back next year. Bishop Philip has given me ‘special permission’ to return to officiate at weddings booked up to and including the end of July 2021. I may well Holly and Shane’s 2019 wedding at St see you amongst the congregation then – that is, in the Wyllow, Lanteglos by Fowey, with the hope that weddings will be back to some sort of ‘normality’ reception at nearby Tredudwell Manor next year. I suspect they and Church services as a whole Wedding Venue. will evolve as a ‘new normality’ – only time will tell. And so my friends this is a fond farewell, not goodbye, from me and although Dave and I will I have now retired, so please send church related emails to Pippa Morrell-Davies at [email protected]. You can ring Pippa on Mobile: 07399 563 440. I will respond to personal emails as soon as possible. Pelynt Church – what of the future? The Current pandemic has brought to a head that which we already knew within the Church, that we are struggling to keep the show on the road! By Law each Parish has to have Church Wardens, a Treasurer, Secretary, Council Members and support from the general congregation and wider community. Many of our congregation, volunteers and worship leaders are in the ‘vulnerable’ category and therefore the PCC has made the decision not to open the building for the time being and will review the situation again in September. If we are to re-open safely we will need help from the village, so if you are able to help in any way, be it ever so small, please contact Sheila Morrell-Davies on 01503 220976 so that we can once again offer a space for worship, private prayer and reflection, baptisms, weddings, funerals, visitors and not forgetting school visits for teaching, plays and concerts. When worship can resume, and because of Revd Marilyn’s retirement, by necessity there has to be a slight change to the service plan as follows: 1st Sunday of the month – Benefice Service – see notice board for which church 2nd Sunday of the month – As before – United Village Service in Pelynt Church 3rd Sunday of the month – As before – Service in the Methodist Church 4th Sunday of the month – 5.00 pm Songs of Praise in Pelynt Church 5th Sunday of the month - Benefice Service – see notice board for which church 5 5 The mid-week communion will be led by Revd Roger May on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 9.30 a.m. Pelynt Church – Annual Gift Day You will no doubt appreciate that although Unfortunately the church finances are in a our Church building is closed, the very unhealthy state. overheads, Mission and Ministry payment Under normal circumstances, Sunday 9th to Truro Diocese, utility, insurance and August, 2020 would have been our annual maintenance bills have still had to be paid ‘Gift Day’ when so many from our Pelynt (and – around £385 per week. Currently there is wider) community have in the past no income from Sunday services, weddings, generously donated via a ‘Gift Day’ envelope funerals, fete or from locals and visitors to help keep the Parish Church solvent. As we go to print it does not seem likely that there will be a service at which to bring donations this year but any donations you are able to make would be very welcomed and can be sent or taken to Mr. G. Whiteley at 2 Summerlane Park, Pelynt, PL13 2JW. We cannot stress enough that we really do need your financial support if you want your Grade 1 listed village Church to be here in the future for your family baptisms, weddings alike who would normally be and funerals.
