Walk the Thames 2011 6 weeks to go

News

Hello everyone

New teams joining this week include Wragge & Co whose team include one person running one day and another running both days!

The number of walkers has reached 250 as Wragge’s joined in, the Colleges started booking walkers and Clyde and Co somehow whizzed from a few walkers to 34!

New teams will join over the next five weeks and we are on the Roll on Friday blogs now :

http://www.rollonfriday.com/Blogs/ReadBlog/tabid/144/Id/774/Default.aspx

Apologies to Clyde’s whose team grew after RoF called, otherwise they would have got a mention.

Every walker you recruit produces more funds for these charities

Every penny you raise this year is vital. So please do your very best.

It was also great that some serious fundraising started this week. Many thanks to SNR Denton for sponsoring their team (subject of course to the walkers doing the walk!) and to CMS Cameron McKenna and Birbeck School of Law for getting their walkers raising sponsorship. So far, the walk has raised £3,000

Please remember your team may include anyone in your firm, chambers, college or organisation, not just the lawyers and we welcome any family, friends or external colleagues who wish to join your team.

Footwear

Don’t wear new boots or shoes. Those are almost guaranteed to give you blisters very early on.

Last year walkers felt that softer walking shoes or trainers were best for day one on pavements. On the second day sturdier walking boots would be better along the gravel and mud paths past

Here is a link to the type of socks which will be best for the walk: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=18123

These types of socks can be found in most sports shops, the most important factor is that they contain "CoolMax" fibres which help to prevent blisters.

Another tip would be to pour talcum powder into the shoes before walking, this also helps to prevent blisters.

Look after your feet and the walk will be fun

The route

Vijay has not been idle over Christmas and after extensive research has chosen the Whistle & Flute pub in Putney High Street as the end point for day 1. you can see where we are going at:-

Day 1 - http://www.walk4life.info/walk/walk-thames-2011-day-1-0

Day 2 - http://www.walk4life.info/walk/walk-thames-2011-day-2

And walk past this

On the day walkers will have detailed maps . For now here is the description:-

Starting at the Thames Barrier (South Side we walk to the tunnel to the Isle of Dogs

Nipping on to the Isle of Dogs cuts out a loop of the river and some boring bits. Exit the Isle back on to the South bank and then it’s Thames path (South side) all the way to Putney Bridge where we turn right and end at the Whistle and Flute pub in Putney High Street. That is close to Putney Railway Station and not far from East Putney and Putney bridge tube stations.

On day two we will start at Putney Bridge by the rowing club (Thames path South side again – just West of the Bridge) and take the Thames path all the way until we cut up to Richmond Park and do a loop of the Park before going down the hill in to Richmond and finishing at the Orange Tree pub near Richmond station (BR and tube).

Start times Day 1 is scheduled to start at 8.30 a.m. . We will be at the Thames Barrier cafe from about 8.00 and we will remain there until about 9.30 a.m. . You don’t have to wait for everyone to arrive before starting off.

You’ll walk through Park on Day 1 this year

Day 2 you get a lie in and we schedule the start at 9.00. Again we will be there half an hour in advance of the scheduled time and stay for an hour after.

The fundraising

Each team will have a fundraising page on the Walk section of the Trust’s web area at Virgin Money Giving. (we’ve moved from Just Giving to save money) Very keen fundraisers are welcome to establish their own page there but any team member can use the team page and ask everyone they know to sponsor them online through that page.

We also provide each walker with paper sponsorship forms. That is because not all walkers will like asking people to sponsor online and not all funders like online giving.

However, it is easiest for everyone if as much fundraising as possible is done through the online pages. Virgin do all the gift aid reclaims for us on online donations and so online donations save us a lot of work both in gift aid claims and in chasing up for funds after the walk.

Where you use the paper form please ensure that you get the HOME address of the sponsor. We can’t claim the 28.2% gift uplift without the full name and HOME address of your sponsors. You don’t have to have all sponsors on one form. A form can have one name or lots. You could send in a separate form with each donation if necessary. Use as many forms as you need to. So you can have them going round more than one place at a time.

Top tip: when raising funds offline ask the sponsor to give you the sponsorship when they agree to sponsor. If you have to see them all after the walk it takes ages and is a real pain .

Finally, we set no fundraising minimum for walkers and just ask everyone to do their best at getting lots of sponsorship but if you really can’t bring yourself to ask people for sponsorship it would be great if you can sponsor yourself for at least £25 so the Trust at least makes a little bit on you walking.

Just a few of the Linklaters’ team preparing to walk in 2010

The funds you raise will really make a difference Please everyone – do your very best

Mary Ward Legal Centre help thousands of people with debt and housing problems each year. They are moving. The move will enable them to have more volunteers, help many more people and pay less rent. The capital cost of doing up the new office and moving is large but great long term value. The Mary Ward’s move is just one of the great causes that Walk the Thames will support.

Who can enter the walk ? Anyone can walk in Walk the Thames. While teams will come from legal entities, those teams can contain anyone that the team invites. Friends, family, external colleagues are all welcome to join in.

Those who don’t fit in to any other category can walk in the London Legal Support Trust’s own team.

First aid & Insurance First aid on the walk is provided by St. John Ambulance first aiders on push bikes. There will be a mobile number provided to call in a bike to any injury. Public Indemnity insurance for all of the legal walks in England and Wales in 2011 is funded by the Access to Justice Foundation.

Walking on one day

If anyone want to walk on just the Saturday, or just the Sunday, it is fine. Just let me know and of course the person has to make clear to their sponsors what they are doing.

Runners

Incredibly a couple of people did run the walk last year. That is not a problem. Again just tell me you are doing that and you won’t be hanging around at the end point with no one to meet you.

Cyclists I have already been asked if people can cycle and of course we don’t mind that. Our public indemnity insurance is for walking though. So cyclists would have to sign an indemnity.

Our walk leader The Rt. Hon the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers- President of the Supreme Court

The cause

2011 will be a dreadful year for legal advice agencies and for the people who rely on those agencies for access to justice.

Law Centres and specialist legal advice agencies provide their services through a mixture of legal aid funding, local authority funding and charitable donations .

The agencies make a huge difference to people’s lives, reducing debt, poverty and homelessness, and combating discrimination and injustice.

The Government propose to remove several areas of social welfare law from the legal aid scheme including:- Benefits, Debt , Employment and non-asylum immigration.

In addition the Government have cut support to Local Authorities and those cuts are being passed on through cuts in grants to the voluntary sector. By the end of 2011 over £2million of funding will have been lost to London’s legal advice centres even if legal aid is not cut at all.

Without our help agencies will close. In 2011. Even with our help some will go but it is our aim to maintain as many of the best services as we can.

It may seem that the funds you can raise through walking, or even through organising a whole team, will make little difference. However, we are raising funds through many schemes and events and added together they will make a difference.

You will make a difference Please do your very best

Drinks and Chips at the end of each day – Thank you BPP!

There is no minimum or maximum number for a team There is no minimum sponsorship level We just ask that team organisers and walkers all do their best
