Liz Jump I really [nd it very diZcult to believe that we have arrived in October already. Yet here we are. In some ways this year has \own and in others it seems to have dragged its heels. It seems so little time since we were on the other side of a lockdown, and yet life at this end of the year is so diYerent to what it was just those few short months ago. In some ways I feel that we have lost a lot – the freedom to go where we please, to meet with family and friends, to live our lives without the fear of an unseen enemy threatening infection and illness. Yet in other ways I feel we have gained too – an appreciation of what matters to us, a sense of a slower way of living, the letting go of some things that maybe weren’t as important as we thought they were. Maybe I just think diYerently on diYerent days, depending on how life is going, and how I feel. I suspect that’s true of us all.

In church we are managing to move forward and meet together, but there are losses and gains here too. We can’t hold Sunday services in all our churches yet, and we are having just one service on a Sunday at either Wroxham or Hoveton St John. Xere are mixed feelings here too – we miss having more services in more churches, yet most of us are really enjoying meeting together as a group across the bene[ce. Looking forward, we are looking towards Remembrance and Christmas, and we are aware that we can’t do it all in the usual way. Xis year will be diYerent, and that is sad in a way. But we are also enjoying the challenge of how to do the same festivals in new ways.

I guess it’s just a time of mixed feelings. But then so much of life is. For me, when life is mixed and crazy and slightly confusing, I [nd strength in the knowledge that God is always there, never changing, and I can rely on him through it all. Xe hymn puts it better than I could

*rough all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

Love and prayers Rev Liz

ClUB NEWS

WROXHAM FOOTBAll ClUB WE are up and running despite some concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus. The Prime Minister made a statement on 9th Sept regarding new measures for social gatherings but he confirmed that team sports are permitted to continue. We have received clarification from DCMS that this includes the continuation of spectators at current levels (in our case 300 capacity) attending Step 3 and below; we play in Step 5. Further discussions are still to take place regarding other implications for clubs of this announcement e.g Test & Trace/Groups of 6. But it is a whole new environment for all of us with measures to make everyone safe. These include social distancing, temperature checks before games and records kept for 21 days to assist with NHS Track & Trace should they be required, which hopefully they won’t be! One of our 1st team players had a scare prior to our first league game away to Mildenhall which had to be postponed. His employer requested he take a coronavirus check as he had “some sniffles” but the test was negative. While all this has been an additional distraction there has been some enthralling action as both our men’s 1st team and the women’s team made a start in their respective FA Cup competitions. The men met Arlesley from Bedfordshire at Trafford Park who had to make one of the longest “regional” journeys on a Tuesday night which took them over 2 hours. They may have been travel weary as our lads took full advantage of with some “Barcelona” style play which brought 5 goals before half-time. The visitors managed a clean sheet in the 2nd half but the tie was already won. We had a ticketed crowd of over 250 to cheer the boys on and another one of around that figure when we beat Gorleston in the FA Cup; we now play Royston away on Sept 22nd. Ex-Canary star Grant Holt was pitched into a makeshift place at Centre back due to injury but he didn’t look out of place in that role which he had played as a schoolboy. 8 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] Games come thick and fast during Sept & Oct. Depending on further progress in the FA Cup scheduled games may be changed. Best to follow us on Twitter @the_Yachtsmen or our website www.wroxhamfc.club to keep up with any changes. The women had home advantage when they met Kettering Women in the women’s FA Cup, who also had a long journey. Our girls were also rampant with a 10 nil win. They now meet Kings Lynn Ladies in the next round. The men finally got their league programme started with an away trip to Swaffham. The home side battled hard for 30 minutes before our lads got on top and had 3 or 4 good chances before half-time but their keeper made some good stops. Two second half goals, which could had been more, gave us our first three points. The women had a fantastic win in their opening league game at home to Bowers & Pitsea. They were 2nil down and then 1-3 before a blitz of goals saw them beat the visitors 4-3. The reserves had their first game at home to Harleston postponed but face a tough start against sides who will be looking to challenge for the Sterry Cup. The u18’s got off to a flying start with an 2-8 win away to Bungay. They will be hoping for another can only season in the Thurlow Nunn East Division while our development team including mostly 16 year olds play in the North Division. All our junior teams are also starting soon. At this time our clubhouse is closed for social gatherings which will mean a significant loss of revenue. The one consolation is that we have received grants from the Football Foundation for Pitch Preparation, Clubhouse Preparation and Matchday Preparation.

BlUEBEllS Our monthly meetings on the first Thursday in the month are now postponed until further notice. Please keep yourselves safe and well, and when we are eventually free from this virus, we will have a celebration.

It also means some of our outside visits have had to be postponed. However we were able to hold our planned fund raiser on 6th September at Wroxham Barns when we organised a Classic Car Show. As many classic car shows this year have had to be cancelled we were delighted to be able to put on this special event. There was a prize for best in show on the day, and we thank all the classic car owners who attended, over 30 in all, who made up an excellent spectacle. We also collected on the day for local rotary charities and had an excellent response from the public who visited Wroxham Barns that day. With 100% of all proceeds from our collections go directly to the charities concerned we raised around £800 , so a big thank you to all concerned. We are hoping that our next planned activity which is scheduled to take place on 26th September in Hoveton, a Work Day doing a general clean and tidy operation on Granary Staithe and Pocket Park along with Hoveton Parish Council can still take place with working groups of no more than 6. Going forward we will continue to assess the situation as to what activities are possible. Meantime please stay safe and remember in the true Rotary spirit of “Service above Self ” we have members ready and willing to help out in the local community wherever the need arises. Directives from the Village Hall mean we would have to sanitise before and after the meeting and wear masks all the time whilst in the hall, We think this would impede any enjoyment we would have, also there would be no refreshments or raffle. Hopefully we will re-commence in January, a notice will be put in the December edition. Please enjoy your geraniums and of course your garden in general at least the rain has given some plants a new lease of life. Pam 01603782041 gARDENINg TIPS FOR OCTOBER October can be spectacular with all of the different colours that our trees produce. This time of year we have lost our evenings so we must plan our jobs carefully. Before the frosts arrive we need to move any containers which have tender plants into a sheltered spot, or maybe into a greenhouse or conservatory. Plants that are tender which are planted in the ground can be protected by fleece and mulch put around the base. Start to tidy borders, lift any remaining summer bedding. Dig over, add organic matter and tidy up permanent plants, before planting spring bulbs and pansies, violas or wallflowers. Prune and shape up shrubs and reduce the height of those tall ones, like buddleia davidii. Your lawns should have regained their colour by now. Keep cutting them but not so short as you have been. If you like a nice lawn, scarify two or three ways and clear up debris. Spike the grass, if necessary, to improve drainage and let air in. Then you should over dress and seed the grass to thicken the sward. In the veg area, lift remaining potatoes, beetroot and carrots. Take down runner beans and add to the compost heap but leave the roots in the ground. Pick apples and pears and store carefully. Pick any remaining soft fruit. In the pond, tidy plants and remove any yellow leaves. If you are changing your garden around or planning to plant bare root stock, this is a good time to do it. For plants like hedges, trees and general shrubs, make sure you dig a larger hole than the root ball and add organic matter, then plant your tree or shrub, firming in and watering well. Colour to look out for this autumn are maples and acers. They provide the most brilliant foliage colours from burning yellows to rich reds and bronze purples. Enjoy your garden this October. Take care. Michael Ottaway, Chairman

Inputs by 15th Please 11 WROXHAM AND HOvETON lIONS ClUB Autumn is officially here and the nights are beginning to draw in. The pandemic has taken its toll on much of our fund raising activities and as we have an ageing club membership, we have decided not to hold any more craft fairs until next year. Hopefully, by then, we’ll have a vaccine.

This respite has given us the opportunity to carry out much needed maintenance on our precinct tombola and storage hut. We must thank Jekyll’s Chandlery for sorting out our sun canopy, which was in need of a little TLC.

The two new Lions memorial benches have now been secured in place and Mastercote UK Ltd in assisted us by very kindly powder coating our metal securing brackets. Everyone should be able to enjoy these for years to come.

Do you have any knitting needles that you no longer have a use for? The Mumba Children’s Project has plenty of Zambian women who are happy to knit school jumpers and have the wool, but are short of knitting needles. Please drop any needles off at our shop and we’ll ensure they are forwarded to the Leo club who are running the appeal.

Our thanks to all those who have donated undamaged Bric a Brac, toys, books and clean clothing to our shop. We are still accepting these items during our opening times, preferably during the morning, but please do not leave anything outside the shop as it’s considered to be Fly-tipping and as such is unlawful.

Have you recently retired and done all those things that you were meant to do but couldn’t because of work commitments?. Are you at a loose end looking to take up a new challenge?. If so, we are always on the lookout for volunteers in our shop or new members, male or female in any age group, to join our friendly Lions team. We’ll be very happy to give you more information about our club activities, so please ring me on 01603781310, or our Membership Chairman lion lydia Spight on 07503221485.

You can always follow us on Facebook or our website. We look forward to hearing from you.

They are held in the grounds of Hoveton Village Hall and we choose the best sheltered spot depending on the weather and the traffic noise. The weather has only let us down twice when we have met in the Village Hall. The Village Hall committee have been very accommodating and we are now experts at social distancing, risk assessments, etc. It’s the company of friends that we appreciate after our recent isolation and we have progressed from just chatting to having the odd quiz or informal talk. On 2nd September we had a formal W.I. meeting in the village hall with an interesting speaker. Rosie Wilkin arrived in medieval costume and demonstrated weird and wonderful medical practices of the dark ages. Compulsive listening but a bit gruesome in places! As we go to press the new ‘Rule of 6’ has just started so we plan to offer two or three smaller meetings on Wednesdays to adhere to the government rules. Perhaps we should rename ourselves as Adaptable Hoveton & District W.I. Carolyn Williams. President.

WROXHAM WI We did it! Some members of Wroxham WI were able to gather for the first time since February for the Garden August Party meeting. Our lovely hosts had ensured it was all COVID secure and festivities began at 2.00 pm – so did the rain! It was out with the macs and especially the brollies and on with the socially distanced chat in true WI spirit. It has not been quite the 70th Birthday year we had planned. Outings, an evening boat trip and a Birthday lunch have all fallen victim to covid. The Wroxham WI committee had agreed that future meetings should be postponed until February 2021 and the next day the announcement of the “rule of 6” confirmed this. Procedures still have to be followed and the Annual Meeting in November will take place by post with the sending out of reports and accounts. Our President will ensure that we keep in touch with one another by telephone or emails. Even World War II could not put a stop to WI meetings. If you would like to know more about Wroxham WI and our future plans please contact Jean on 01603 782875.

WHB TWINNINg ASSOCIATION Not much to report from our Twinning Association at the moment and I discovered at a Zoom meeting for NATC, the Norfolk Association of Twinning Committees, on 8th September that nearly all of our county’s Twinning organisations are in the same boat, of course. We do keep in touch with our French counterparts, as an association and individually as friends, and their situations mirror our own in la Pommeraye and Montjean-sur-loire. Social events are, of course, cancelled for now and it doesn’t look like we will be able to do anything in the near future, especially with the new” rule of six”. Inputs by 15th Please 13 French Conversation is suspended for now and we shall review it later, whenever we can get together again: the format does need changing so we’ll see what we can do. Meanwhile, our members will just have to practise their French by emailing or phoning their French friends, listening to French radio, online French courses, French books etc. Book Club members have had six successful Zoom meetings so far, the latest in September to discuss “Guardian of Lies” by Kate Furnivall, set in France, post World War Two, so a little taste French culture and landscape. We will try and keep going and probably have to rely on Kindle books, Ebay etc, although Wroxham library is open again but would probably find it difficult, in these times, to supply us with enough books. We will enquire soon. Pat can supply more information for now on 01603 782375 or [email protected] For any more information please contact us, via Peter, on 01603 782733 or [email protected]

NORTH NORFOlK DISTRICT COUNCIl Message from County & District Councillor Nigel Dixon Planning for the Future - the government White Paper consultation. You may have heard mentions of this controversial White Paper which aims to fundamentally reform the way our development planning system has worked since 1947. There have been numerous changes to it over the decades and most planning professionals say it’s very complex and doubt whether it’s fit for purpose in modern times. It proposes many radical and potentially beneficial changes which could speed up the Planning process. Having said that, we should be cautious not to “throw the baby out with the bath water” especially when the government has a “build build build” mantra and wants to double the rate of house building. While there’s clearly a serious under supply of housing, such growth should only go where the infrastructure and matching employment can support it without harming the environment so that it accelerates climate change or so it degrades our quality of life or the rural and coastal economy. We don’t want to see a free for all for developers to simply build where they want nor do we want the current situation whereby builders can effectively land bank sites, on which they have permission to build, by simply making a token start and then building it out years later when the economics are most favourable to them. Development planning has major impact on our lives and we need to be aware of what’s proposed and have our say before it becomes law. The “Planning for the Future” document is 84 pages long and I wouldn’t expect any of you to want to read it; the consultation closes at 11.45 on 29 Oct 2020. To give you a quick ‘one page’ grasp of it go to the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) website; it lists the key changes and offers one click ‘read more’ options. At this stage I can’t advocate whether ‘in the round’ it’s good or bad for and Hoveton as the devil is usually in the detail and it could be significantly amended by the consultation comment and as it passes through Parliament. One crucial factor is whether North Norfolk and Hoveton will be classed as a Growth, Renewal or Protected area; clearly, I hope it will treated as a Protected area to conserve , Coastal and rural landscapes so that we retain the character of the environment and the reasons why so many of us elect to live here. You can either respond to the consultation direct and or send your comments to your local MP, with copies to me and your Parish Council if you wish. I will be looking into it in more detail and will influence the consultation response NNDC makes in due course. Please be aware of this opportunity and make your views known. Brook Park Phase 2 Planning Application. Following on the planning theme, the conclusion of the application is still awaited; if it’s to proceed then there are major obstacles to overcome. I understand the ball is in the Persimmon court and NNDC will have to call time on that soon and I will advise you further. Inputs by 15th Please 15 Update on Foul Water Flooding in lower and Upper Hoveton Networks. Work continues in pressing Anglian Water (AW) to investigate and rectify the causes of long standing foul water flooding in the lower Hoveton network and the more recent foul water flooding in the Grange Close area. Working with the help of North Norfolk MP, Duncan Baker and Hoveton Parish Council we had a further meeting with AW Regional Officers in Sep. The priorities are ensuring the current situation doesn’t worsen and to ensure short term and long term solutions to current problems are developed and implemented. Once those are done and the foul water infrastructure brought up to standard, with spare capacity, other development within the village can safely be accepted. Until then the crusade continues and we know there are no quick fixes. Covid19 – The Future. We have passed the peak of visitors and, although Norfolk has been a hotspot with the Banham Poultry outbreak, the North Norfolk infection rate has remained one of the lowest in the Country. The quick response in terms of test, track and trace has contained the spread to a few isolated areas in other Districts; to a large extent it helped when NCC accepted enhanced support from central government. However, the risk is still there if people don’t follow the basic Covid safety rules but there’s likely to be further outbreaks during at least the next 6 months when the weather and day light hours are more challenging. So, we need to take steps to look one another not just physically but in our spirits too. Operation Good Neighbour has now been integrated into the Wroxham & Hoveton Good Neighbour Scheme and this is open to anyone needing help or to offer help as a registered volunteer on 07501 362793. Similarly, the Community Car Scheme is back in action with a trio of new Trustees, including myself, and coordinators ready to help with medical appointments as from early Sep. So the local community is active in helping each other, whether through formal Schemes or by informal next door neighbour or across the road arrangements. If you are aware of anyone who may not be supported or is struggling to cope then please contact the nearest Local Co-ordination Centre at via stalham.lcc@north- norfolk.gov.uk or the Wroxham & Hoveton Good Neighbour Scheme on 07501 362793. I welcome your views on these and any other issues. My contact details are: Tel 783885 or e mail: [email protected] or [email protected].

HOvETON PARISH COUNCIl Parish Partnership Scheme Norfolk County Council’s (NCC) Parish Partnership Scheme for 2021-2022 has already been highlighted in the August and September issues of The Bridge. To date, only a couple of suggestions have been received which, sadly, do not fit the criteria of the scheme, but a parish councillor has come up with a few ideas which will be discussed at HPC’s October meeting. One idea concerns the embankment next to the 3 Rivers Cycleway. It is in a very poor state and full of weeds. HPC has tried many times to get NCC to return this embankment to an acceptable state,

16 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] but without success. Possible costs for this work are currently being investigated. In the meantime, suggestions from local residents can still be submitted in respect of highway improvements under this scheme. Just to remind you that this scheme offers 50/50 funding up to a maximum of £25,000 per bid (the parish council must ‘match fund’ the amount applied for).

NNDC Business Support grants Fund HPC is delighted to have received a grant of £10,000 under the above scheme (HPC was able to claim this based on the fact that it receives Small Business Rate Relief on its Granary Staithe business rates). This will hopefully allow HPC a little more flexibility in next year’s budget when considering the matched funding required by the Parish Partnership Scheme ………….

Budget Preparations …………… and talking of next year’s budget! HPC will soon be drawing up its draft budget for the 2021/22 financial year and planning how funds will be spent. As part of this process any feedback from local residents on items to be included in the budget, and on the setting of the parish precept, are always taken into consideration. So if you have identified a particular need for funding within the parish, or if there is a specific project you would like to see your parish council pursue in the near future, please do get in touch and let us know. Please bear in mind it needs to be a project that benefits the village as a whole. Please send your feedback to Lisa, the Parish Clerk (07572 349 600 or [email protected]).

SAM2 locations Our SAM2’s first home was on Tunstead Road and it is currently sited on lamp posts on Stalham Road. Grateful thanks to our volunteers, who move the sign every four weeks and download the data (no mean task!) for passing on to our Beat Manager, PC Tom Gibbs. Speeding in other areas of the village could do with monitoring and councillors have now discussed the possibility of moving our SAM2 to Church Road. This will require identifying a suitable street light on which to mount brackets, purchasing the brackets, a new MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between NCC and HPC, and volunteers from Church Road or nearby to help move the sign every four weeks and to download the data. The first three will be easy enough to achieve but the last may prove a little more difficult. If anyone out there is interested in volunteering, please contact Cllr Alex Howe on 01603- 783096/07702-607130 or [email protected]

Covid-19 There seems little more to add in respect of social distancing (or lack of it) in the village. Councillors Mancini-Boyle and Peter Howe have shared responsibility for keeping the hand sanitisers clean and refilled, but recently it has become evident that these are not being used a great deal. It may be that people are carrying their own, but nevertheless HPC would like to urge better use of the sanitisers (one is located close to the entrance of Granary Staithe, and the other is close to Ken’s Fish and Chips shop) and sensible queuing when waiting for takeaways. Inputs by 15th Please 17 Hoveton Flower Beds Grateful thanks to the lady who responded to our request last month for help with the village flower beds. Plans are now afoot for restructuring of the Granary Staithe flower bed as a few of the shrubs have grown to an unmanageable height. The guardian of our upper Stalham Road bed has ordered a quantity of bulbs, so look out for the daffs and tulips early next year! The bed on Station Road has been looked after for many years by a volunteer who has had to step down, and so HPC has contacted NNDC to try to discover the ownership and future plans for this bed. And whilst this was being typed, the opportunity of a partnership with other community groups in the village has arisen. This would be a fantastic example of local fellowship if it takes off. Watch this space. volunteers – just to clarify ………. If you would like to volunteer you do not need to become a parish councillor. All you need is a little spare time, and a wish to contribute towards the life of our village. A helping hand is always welcome.

Wroxham and Hoveton Network Improvement Strategy District Councillor Nigel Dixon has updated HPC on the above and it is worth mentioning that HPC Chairman, Martin Richmond, is also taking an active part in this process. It is hoped the resetting of the process will now allow a review of any current proposals, including the use of our traffic survey data analysis.

HPC’s next meeting is on Monday 5th October, to be held via Zoom, and all are welcome to attend. Details of how to access the meeting will be included within the meeting agenda. More information can also be found on our website at http://hovetonparishcouncil.norfolkparishes.gov.uk

WROXHAM PARISH COUNCIl NEWS village Cemetery Now that the cemetery extension’s new roadway has been completed the next step is the planting of a hedge to surround it. We have been gifted more than 400 saplings which we intend to plant in November. We are currently compiling a list of volunteers to help us in this enterprise. If you can spare some time and would like to help please contact Cllr Peter Mantle: [email protected]

Special Thanks To Two Special People Our grateful thanks to two special people in the village for their help in sprucing up our village war memorial - Kim and Peter Claxton. As part of a general refurbishment overseen by Cllr Angela Ireland, Kim and Peter have just cut back all the hedging and cleared loads of dead plants to really smarten the area up. Cllr Ireland had previously arranged and raked out new gravel for the area. Our community depends on active volunteers and we would be a poorer place without them. 18 To Advertise Tel: 01603 782466 or e-mail [email protected] New village Sign The new granite village sign, due to be unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant next May, will not replace the present metal signs at either end of the village, but will become a third sign in the heart of the village. It has been commissioned as a direct result of public feedback during consultations for the Wroxham Neighbourhood Plan and not, as some have suggested, an idea that came from the Parish Council itself. At the beginning of WNP consultations when villagers were invited to say what they would do to improve the village - if they had a magic wand! - after a bypass and a swimming pool a lot of people said ‘ a new village sign please’. Sadly a bypass and a pool were not ours to give, but a new village sign we could manage. It is understood that those who do not live in Wroxham , but have passed comment, could not know these facts as, because they don’t live in our village, they were not consulted. We hope this will put an end to ill informed views on the matter. Speed Watch Following complaints about speeding from residents in several areas of the village Cllr Sylvia Holyoake has suggested it might be time now for a volunteer speed watch team to encourage motorists to slow down. Full training will be given. Anyone interested in joining such a team should contact the Parish Clerk at [email protected] or phone 07341 873375. litter Litter picking in the village has been undertaken for over a year by a team from the community payback programme. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic they have not been operating. It would therefore be a big help to the village if you could pick up any litter you may find near your home. If we all did this it would help keep the village tidy. Parish Councillor vacancies We currently have three vacancies on the council and we are actively looking for candidates to help spread the work load. The role is open to anyone over 18 who has resided in Wroxham for more than a year or who is on the electoral role. The only qualification needed is a lively interest in village affairs and a desire to make a difference. If you think you might like to join please contact Council Chairman Barry Fiske for an informal chat: [email protected] Parish Councillor Profile - Philip Everett “I joined the council in 2017, having moved to the village in 2016 from Hertfordshire. After spending several years as visitors to the area, my wife and I decided we would spend our retirement living in Wroxham permanently. I retired from the Metropolitan Police Service after more than 30 years of serving the communities of London in a variety of roles. In addition, I was a school governor at a school for eight years, where I lived in Hertfordshire and a member of my Parochial Church Council.

Inputs by 15th Please 19 Being new to the village, the opportunity to become part of the council team and continue my commitment to public service was a challenge I was keen to take up. My entire life has been about working with communities, whether through my work life, as a parent in a school governor role or my local church. With the intention of spending our retirement here, I feel it is important to play as full a part as possible in our community not only helping to encourage a sense of community spirit but also to contribute to the future development of the village. One of the first projects I became involved in was the development and implementation of the Wroxham Neighbourhood Plan. It was an excellent way to find out more about our community, the history of the village and how the particular location of Wroxham is so important in the whole development of and the surrounding area. Equally, it was also an opportunity to ensure that the village remains protected from any development that is not sensitive to its iconic location. It is the natural environment of the parish that gives the village its unique beauty and needs to be preserved for future generations. I have also been involved in a variety of projects aimed at planning for the future of the village and improving its amenities. My other responsibilities include heading up the Administration and Governance group and as a member of both the Planning and Cemetery Management groups It didn’t take long following my arrival to be tempted out onto the water and enjoy the chance to learn to sail. As a complete novice it has been great learning a new skill and being so warmly welcomed by a local community of sailors eager to share their knowledge. As a keen football fan, I can often be found at Trafford Park supporting ‘The Yachtsmen’ on a Saturday afternoon with an ever growing crowd and an encouraging community atmosphere.” Contact: Clare Male Parish Clerk : [email protected]. DEW SOMETHINg DIFFRUNT As a native of Wroxham with Norfolk ancestors, writes Keith Turner, I grew up using words such as “dwile” for floorcloth and “down the loke” for the lane beside the former chapel leading to my grandmother’s house - and I certainly remember other children talking of “cushies” for sweets. I was surprised, however, to learn from the three pages of local dialect in this newly-published booklet full of Norfolk stories, poems and pictures, that “jiffle” (fidget), “red beet” (beetroot), “jip” (twinge of pain) and “stingy” (with a soft g - mean with money) were also Norfolk expressions. Visit www.wroxhamhistory.wordpress.com for much more that’s “diffrunt” about the county we live in.

Built for Ethel and Helen Colman, and launched in 1905, she had no expense spared on her Egyptian themed interior. This interior, together with her name, were designed to commemorate the Colman sister’s brother Alan, who sadly died from tuberculosis while in Egypt at the young age of just thirty.

The invalided Alan had been taken to Egypt in 1896 by his sisters Laura and Helen, in the hope that the dry desert air would be restorative to his health. A few weeks later their father Jeremiah, sister Ethel and youngest sister Florence travelled out to join them. It was Alan’s dying wish to sail on the Nile, and this he did shortly before his death in February 1897. The vessel he sailed on was called Hathor. After the family’s sad return to Norfolk, Jeremiah returned to his Colman Mustard Works and immersed himself in the business. His youngest daughter Florence was soon to be married, but daughters Ethel and Helen remained spinsters. They seemed to thrive though and both led busy and active lives.

Ethel Colman, born in 1863, was the second of Jeremiah J. Colman’s four daughters, with Helen next in line of the six children. The whole family were devout non-conformist Christians and in 1929 Ethel was elected as a Life Deacon by the hierarchy of Princes Street Congregational Church. In her sixties by now, this was an acknowledgement of her lifelong services to the church, as well as her philanthropy. In 1915 Ethel and Helen had commissioned the building of twenty-two small flats to re-house those worst affected by the Norwich flood of 1912. Later, in the 1920s, they bought and renovated Suckling House, added an extension, and then presented the public hall as a gift to Norwich City Council.

In November 1923, Ethel Mary Colman became the first Lady Lord Mayor of Norwich. In fact she was the first ever Lady Lord Mayor in Britain. At first she had declined the role, but when she finally did accept, it was her younger sister Helen who was to be her Lady Mayoress.

It is wonderful to know that our wherry Hathor’s first owners were such pioneering and public spirited individuals. By keeping Hathor sailing today, we also keep alive these memories of the Colman family. My thanks go to WYC Friend Phyllida Scrivens and her book ‘The Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich 1923 – 2017’, without which I could not have completed this article.

This May is glorious. The roads are silent, magnifying an orchestra of birdsong. This is not normal, but not unwelcome

The winds of March blew in a deadly virus. Lockdown followed. We had our orders: Stay Home, Save Lives, Support the NHS Do not visit family, you could kill them. the recent pub lunch gathering would soon be a fond memory. An ominous silence follows the absence of footfall. This is unknown.

April’s anxiety and fear leads to panic buying of Pasta and toilet paper. My neighbour, a teacher, chokes her car engine into life To care for other Key Workers’ children, risking her own health. City centres and business parks lay silent, unlittered, the workers furloughed. Churches close, their bells muted, their choirs forbidden to sing. This is necessary but scary

In a sweltering June, green fingers get going in the nations’ gardens, Old bikes are re-cycled for family forays Bread flour is white gold as we all become bakers. Shielders are supported, food and medicine delivered by a volunteer army We clap for the NHS with hands sore from washing. This is encouraging.

July brings gradual re-opening of shops to brave masked consumers Take -Away meals are in demand. Computer is king for those who are Linked In While family life withers. You cannot hug on Zoom But Supermarket deliveries, in plastic bags, will cost the environment dear. Churches reopen, their bells mourn the mounting death toll. Is this better?

Windy August’s cancelled holidays in sunny Spain give way to Staycations With social distancing a farce on pulsing pavements and heaving beaches Rebellious ravers taunt the police and cost the public purse. Eat Out to Help Out tempts us back to tea rooms and taverns Where rude customers demand discounts, and servers are visored. This is threatening.

September sees schools reopened, traffic repollutes the air. Busyness and noise return communities to old habits of stress and hurry. The future is uncertain, the economy faltering, jobs at risk. I yearn for that simple May existence, when House Arrest Brought unimagined liberation of body, mind and soul. This is Challenging. Suzanne Jones Inputs by 15th Please 39 THIS MONTH’S COvER Our front cover is the first to feature Tunstead since the parish joined the WHB Group - apologies for the late welcome, but archive photos of Tunstead seem to be few and far between - unless you know different? Since the Archant Group misguidedly disposed of their historic photographic archive, local photos from it have become available to buy online in distant countries, and this is one. Taken on November 30 1993 the evocative and atmospheric picture shows threshing by steam at the late Billy Bird’s Hall Farm. This was also the site of the ‘Tunstead Trosh’ - a gathering of vintage machinery based around the annual threshing of the cereal crop - which was a great part social event for villages around Tunstead for years and much missed. Billy was a steam man of the ‘old school’ and owned several engines, including this 1919 7 hp Wallis and Steevens ‘Expansion’ engine named, appropriately, ‘Sir William’, seen here driving a Marshall threshing drum. After Billy’s death, ‘Sir William’ moved to Hertfordshire, though often returns to Norfolk for the May rallies at Hall. Luckily another of Billy’s engines, a much rarer 1911 Allchin named ‘Felicity’, only moved a few miles away and may be seen working at local events. The original press caption to the photograph reads “The weather vane points north as a biting wind keeps the threshers cool at Hall Farm, Tunstead”: slightly misleading as the smoke from the engine is blowing in a different direction, and the weather vane has never pointed anywhere but north in half a century!
