SYNOPSIS Decades after the apocalypse, the world has been left in a permanent nuclear winter. A lonely young orphan called THE KID roams the wasteland scavenging for comic books and paraphernalia from the 80s. He trades knick-knacks with the dodgy bar keep BAGU at the nearby trading post for fresh water, the most valuable commodity in this land forsaken by toxins. After bumping into arm-wrestling champion FREDERICK, the Kid sees a glimpse of the exciting world he’s been hiding from all these years. His routine existence is disrupted when he runs into the mysterious (and highly excitable) APPLE. Just as Apple starts to bring The Kid out of his isolated world with unflappable humour and goofy behaviour, their relationship is forever changed when she is kidnapped by a BOUNTY HUNTER working for ZEUS; the sadistic and overly-garrulous leader of the Wasteland. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbocharged weapon, THE KID must confront his fears and embark on an incredible journey with Frederick to rid the Wasteland of evil and to save the girl of his dreams.

Paul Verhoeven’s Sci-Fi Trilogy: Understanding the Media Influence on Capitalism, Individualism, and Patriotism in the United States Maria Rozhestvenskaya (s4771060) M North American Studies Radboud University Nijmegen 01/08/2017 Supervisor: Prof Dr Frank Mehring Second Reader: Dr Mathilde Roza Still from: Total Recall. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, performances by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rachel Ticotin, Carolco Pictures, 1990. North American Studies Teachers who will receive this document: Prof Dr Frank Mehring and Dr Mathilde Roza Title of document: Paul Verhoeven’s Sci-Fi Trilogy: Understanding the Media Influence on Capitalism, Individualism, and Patriotism in the United States Name of course: Master Thesis Date of submission: 01/08/2017 The work submitted here is the sole responsibility of the undersigned, who has neither committed plagiarism nor colluded in its production. Signed Name of student: Maria Rozhdestvenskaya Student number: s4771060 Abstract: To examine such components of American culture as capitalism, individualism, and patriotism, I will analyze how these three themes are depicted in the three movies Paul Verhoeven directed in Hollywood: RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), and Starship Troopers (1997). Then, I will examine how the Dutch director remediates the above-mentioned pillars of American identity and transforms them into consumerism, conformism, and hegemony to criticize the national self- delusion forged by media. I will demonstrate how Verhoeven engages in a dialectic dialogue with media via media. In other words, I will investigate how the Dutch director uses filmic techniques and genre conventions to satirize the vices of American culture and society of the 1980s and 1990s. To do that, scrutinize the combination of such genres as science fiction, western, and action relying on Barry Keith Grant, Steve Neale, and Rick Altman’s theories on genre.

  • Paul Verhoeven and His Hollow Men', Screening the Past, Issue 13, December 2001
Angela Ndalianis, 'Paul Verhoeven and his Hollow Men', Screening the Past, issue 13, December 2001. http://www.latrobe.edu.au/screeningthepast/firstrelease/fr1201/anfr13a.htm Paul Verhoeven and his Hollow Men Angela Ndalianis Violence, action, psychotic characters, the darker side of sexuality, confused realities and unstable, disturbing social spaces: this is the world of Paul Verhoeven's films. A mathematics and physics doctoral student turned filmmaker, Verhoeven has had his share of controversy. Hailing from Holland, his Dutch films included Wat zien ik? (Netherlands 1971), Turks fruit (Netherlands 1973), Keetje tippel (Netherlands 1975), Spetters (Netherlands 1980), Soldaat van oranje (Netherlands 1980), The fourth man (Netherlands 1984) and the international co-production Flesh + blood (US 1985). Provocation was something he carried over, in a revised form, into the films he directed in the United States: RoboCop (US 1987), Total recall (US 1990), Basic instinct (US 1992), Showgirls (US 1995), Starship troopers (US 1997) and Hollow man (US 2000). In 1996, Showgirls (an attempt at grappling with the "reality" of Las Vegas lap-dancers) was nominated for eleven Raspberry Awards following its box-office and critical failure. For the first time in the Raspberries' history, the winner was there to accept his award for Worst Director (Van Sheers 1996, viii). This showmanship reflects Verhoeven's irrepressible nature; he tackles his tasks with passion and a sense of the absurd, rarely making compromises by softening the impact of issues he portrays. Despite being embraced by the mainstream Hollywood system, Verhoeven has managed to retain a European sensibility. He has noted the lack of social critique in Hollywood product of recent years, viewing them as "all action, science fiction and over sentimental love stories".

Malchiodi ii Abstract Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is a polarizing figure. Although many of his American made films have received considerable praise and financial success, he has been lambasted on countless occasions for his gratuitous use of sex, violence, and contentious symbolism–1995s Showgirls was overwhelmingly dubbed the worst film of all time and 1997s Starship Troopers earned him a reputation as a fascist. Regardless of the controversy surrounding him, his science fiction films are a move beyond the conventions of the big blockbuster science fiction films of the 1980s (E.T.
