English Title Subculture as a cultural heritage in a local context: Is the Gothenburg sound visible at the ALM-institutions in Gothenburg? Handledare/Supervisor Anne-Christine Norlén Abstract Through questionnaires answered by the institutions and through searches on their various websites, an image is developing that shows that subcultures are not always given room in the cultural heritage sphere. Even though the Gothenburg sound plays a big part within the metal world, and despite the fact that it has given Gothenburg international recognition within the metal community, it remains more or less invisible in Gothenburg’s institu- tionalized world, both as a subculture and as a cultural heritage. With this essay, we are trying to create a perspective where an eventual explanation for this absence can be given, and where we can raise and problematize these questions. We are trying to illustrate the dominance of the mainstream society compared to subcultures, but also the institutions influence in what qualifies as a cultural heritage. We want to gain an understanding if the Gothenburg sound can be seen as a cultural heritage and if the genre should be made more visible within the institutions. In the end though, the question remain whether it would benefit the subculture to be made visible in the mainstream arena as they through such an uplifting also risk to lose their subcultural identity. Spelningar, konserter och festivaler inom di- verse olika genres har sedan länge funnits att tillgå. För oss två som skriver upp- satsen är det i synnerhet metalscenen i Göteborg som varit den mest intressanta, och vi har sedan många år regelbundet gått på olika lokala spelningar och festiva- ler inom genren. Något vi skämtsamt noterat genom åren är att det alltid är samma människor som är på spelningarna då vi tillslut har börjat känna igen återkom- mande besökare. Men ur detta skämtsamma började vi diskutera och fundera kring om metal som genre är stort eller inte i Göteborg, och om det uppmärksam- mas ur ett seriöst perspektiv. Vi reflekterade även en del om hur vi upplever att synen på svensk metal är utomlands. Varje år åker den ena eller andra av oss, eller båda två, på metalfestivaler och spelningar utomlands. Genom åren har det blivit en del festivaler och spelningar i Tyskland i synnerhet, men också i Slovenien, Nederländerna, USA, Danmark, Skottland, England och Frankrike. Trots att vi besökt olika länder och städer i detta syfte är reaktionen ofta den samma när det kommer fram att vi är ifrån Sverige och Göteborg. Folk blir genast intresserade och vill diskutera svenska band och de vill också väldigt gärna berätta om sverige- resor de gjort, prata om vikingar eller föra ett samtal på svenska. Det har visat sig att det finns en del människor, framförallt i Tyskland, som på grund av sin kärlek för den svenska metalscenen lärt sig svenska. En del är så fascinerade av den att de drömmer om att en dag få flytta till Sverige. Vidare har det ibland hänt att i synnerhet tyskar vill veta om man kan se medlemmarna i In Flames promenera runt i Göteborg. När svaret blir ja, och att det händer att man ibland hamnar på samma spelningar, kan det ibland bli svårt för dem att hantera den spännande in- formationen. På alla de festivaler vi varit på där In Flames har spelat har de också varit en av huvudakterna. Här har vi gjort en reflektion om att det finns ett stort intresse för svensk metal utomlands. Men hur står det egentligen till med metal i Göteborg, staden som har utvecklat och fått ett sound uppkallat efter sig? Å ena sidan har uppsatsens ämne därmed vuxit fram ur vårt gemensamma intresse för metal. Å andra sidan har det också vuxit fram ur vårt gemensamma

I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

Salido al mercado a fines del pasado mes de septiembre, la primera referencia favorable que tuve acerca del fonograma vino de la mano de mi buen amigo Manuel Santín Valdés y, ni corto ni perezoso, me di a la tarea de conseguir el CD. Para quienes no estén al tanto del devenir artístico de James LaBrie, les diré que además de su desempeño con Dream Theater, él se ha involucrado en proyectos tan atractivos como Explorers Club y Mullmuzzler, así como ha intervenido en grabaciones de Fates Warning, Shadow Gallery, Ayreon y en los discos tributo a leyendas del rock, entre las que cabría destacar a Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Queen y Rush.
