TATTERSALLS UNVEILS NEW SALE RACE CLASSIC DREAMS LIVE ON and Newmarket Racecourse will stage the inaugural AT NEWSELLS PARK Tattersalls Somerville Auction S., for 2-year-olds over six furlongs worth ,100,000, in August 2022 on the July Course. The race is restricted to graduates of this year=s Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, which is set for Newmarket=s Park Paddocks on Sept. 7, and prizemoney will be paid down to tenth place, with ,55,000 allocated to the winner. The Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale will be held under its new guise for the first time this year; the sale was previously known as the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, and when the 2020 renewal staged in Newmarket due to COVID-19 restrictions returned records across the board, the decision was made to make it a permanent fixture at Park Paddocks. The sale places an emphasis on forward, athletic yearlings and last year=s sale has already produced 17 individual 2-year-old winners headed by Chipotle (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}), winner of the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot last week. Until last week, he was a relatively small owner/breeder with four broodmares and six horses in training. Now Smith-Bernal has gone from being a client to the new owner of Newsells Park Stud, along with all the farm's bloodstock formerly owned by the Jacobs family. The Herfordshire-based operation, which was set up in 1926 by Sir Humphrey de Trafford, breeder of the 1959 Derby winner (GB), was bought in 2000 by Klaus Jacobs, whose father Walther owned Gestut Fahrhof. That renowned German stud remains in the family's ownership and is run by Klaus's son Andreas, who also owns Maine Chance Farms in South Africa. Since the death of Klaus Jacobs in 2008, Newsells Park Stud has been run on an increasingly commercial footing under the management of Julian Dollar, with boarding mares from leading breeders around the world being a key part of that business. The Boom On Frankel... LOIRE TO BE COVERED Demand for Southern Hemisphere coverings has skyrocketed this season for Frankel. Juddmonte has made the super-sire BY FRANKEL available to Southern Hemisphere time since he retired to stud, with the first yearlings of those covers selling in 2016. However, the explosion of Frankel winners this year, including G1 Australian Oaks winner Hungry Heart and recent G1 JJ Atkins winner Converge, has encouraged breeders to heavily consider the stallion for Australasian mares, and plenty are set to make the trip. That figure is expected to rise with the emergence of championship horses from the stallion. His son Adayar (Ire) won the G1 this month, while Anapurna (GB) claimed the G1 Epsom Oaks for her sire two years ago. As recently as last week, Frankel shared top-billing at Royal Ascot for leading sire honours with Dark Angel (Ire). AInitially we were worried that it was going to cost so much Loire winning the New Zealand 1000 Guineas | Race Images South money to go up to him,@ Taylor said. She will board at the Hazelwood operation of Adrian and Philippa O=Brien in Newmarket. AShe=s a very special mare,@ said Cherry Taylor, who runs Cambridge-based Trelawney Stud with her husband, Brent Taylor. AWe bred her and we love her to bits. We toyed with the idea of going up to Frankel, and we looked at how expensive it was, and we decided in the end that it was worth it. We=ll just keep our fingers crossed for a filly.@ The decision to go for two seasons was a logical one for the Taylors. AFrom our point of view, if she=d only gone for one, and anything went wrong when she got back, yes, we would have had a live-foal guarantee,@ said Taylor. ABut we don=t actually want the money back, we want a Frankel foal, so at least if we Frankel | Bronwen Healy go twice we=ve got a better chance.@ TDN AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND • PAGE 2 OF 2 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • 24 JUNE 2021

Baffert, plus his incorporated racing stable, now remain as the only defendants in the suit, which was filed May 13 in United States District Court (Central District of California). Baffert has not yet responded in court to the complaint. The suit, led by Michael Beychok, the winner of the 2012 National Horseplayers Championship, was filed four days after Baffert's disclosure that Medina Spirit had tested positive for betamethasone after winning the Derby. Baffert's revelation was later confirmed by split-sample testing at two different labs approved by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, but no ruling has yet been issued over those findings. The betamethasone finding in the Derby was the fifth positive test in a Baffert trainee for a regulated but prohibited race-day drug within the past year (two others were for lidocaine, one was for dextrorphan, and another also for betamethasone). It was the third during that time frame to occur in a Grade I stakes. PUBLISHER & CEO Sue Morris Finley @suefinley [email protected]

Zedan Dropped from Lawsuit (cont. from p1) Simultaneously, Baffert has been embroiled in a long and complicated court and racing commission battle in California over whether to disqualify 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify from that year's GI Santa Anita Derby because of a scopolamine finding. Back in 2013, after a cluster of seven sudden horse deaths in Baffert's Hollywood Park barn, the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) issued a report that stated that although "the blanket prescribing of thyroxine to all horses in Baffert's barn does appear unusual" the fatalities remained "unexplained [and] there is no evidence whatsoever CHRB rules or regulations have been violated or any illicit activity played a part."

We believe that a good horse can come from anywhere at any time. I really cut my teeth early on in the game by starting to claim horses, because that was the immediate-action way to go. Then it evolved into trying to buy horses privately, going overseas and getting them to the States. We've been very fortunate to get support from our partners at the yearling sales as well as the 2- year-old sales and have been very lucky to buy Grade I winners and Classic winners out of them. SMITH'S UNUSUAL CLAIM TO BENEFIT BLC Owner Brook Smith, who made headlines when he claimed three horses for $100,000 each out of Saturday's fourth race at Churchill Downs, will enroll all three of those horses in Churchill's Backside Learning Center (BLC)'s Purses for a Purpose program. A percentage of each horse's winnings will be donated to the program to support BLC's mission to build community and enrich the lives of backside workers and their families. All three horses are to be trained by Jeff Hiles. Smith has operated a small stable for more than 20 years, but is building a new operation called RSLP Racing, which is slated to eventually become a partnership. He has been a long-time supporter of BLC and was the person who initiated the concept of Purses for a Purpose in order for owners and trainers to directly support the organization. AWhen launching RSLP Racing, beyond the excitement of doing things a bit differently--making a splash, thoughts immediately went to supporting those that make horse racing possible, the backside,@ said Smith.
