Austria are taking on Russia for the first time since the end of the Soviet Union in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group G, having failed to score in two previous friendly encounters. Match background • Austria and Russia have met twice since the fall of the Soviet Union, with Austria's record in those games W0 D1 L1. Both games were played in Austria and the home side failed to score in either. • Their first encounter in Klagenfurt on 17 August 1994 ended in a 3-0 win for Russia, Vladimir Beschastnykh (43), Yuri Nikiforov (53) and Igor Simutenkov (83) all on target. Beschastnykh's and Nikiforov's goals were their first for their country. • The sides drew 0-0 in Graz on 25 May 2004, though injuries to key players forced Russia coach Georgi Yartsev to field an experimental side. Aleksei Bugaev and Aleksandr Anyukov made their debuts. • Austria and the Soviet Union met six times, the Austrians' record W1 D1 L4 (W1 D1 L0 at home, W0 D0 L3 in the Soviet Union). Notable meetings include a 2-0 win for the USSR at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden, Valentin Ivanov (15) and Anatoli Ilyin (62) the scorers in Boras. • The nations also met in the qualifying group stage for the 1968 UEFA European Championship. Eduard Streltsov (80) scored the vital goal in a 4-3 win for the USSR in Moscow on 11 June 1967, but Leopold Grausam's goal settled the return fixture, a 1-0 win for Austria on 5 November 1967. • Austria and Russia have met in four UEFA age-group competition matches, with Austria's record W3 D1 L0. • There is nothing to separate the nations' clubs in their UEFA competition encounters, the 38 matches between the countries ending with 13 wins apiece and 12 draws. Most recently, FC Zenit drew 0-0 at home and lost 4-1 away against FK Austria Wien in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage.

5 Austria - Russia Saturday 15 November 2014 - 18.00CET (18.00 local time) Match press kit Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Vienna Head coach Marcel Koller Date of birth: 11 November 1960 Nationality: Swiss Playing career: Grasshopper Club Coaching career: FC Wil 1900, FC St Gallen, Grasshopper Club, 1. FC Köln, VfL Bochum 1848, Austria • A former midfielder, Koller spent his entire playing career with Swiss side Grasshoppers, making over 400 league appearances from 1978 to 1997 and winning seven league titles and five Swiss Cups. • Capped 55 times by Switzerland, he scored three goals for his country and made two appearances at EURO '96, coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw with hosts England and starting the 1-0 loss to Scotland. • Began coaching career at Wil in 1997 and took over at St Gallen two years later, leading the club to their first Swiss championship since 1903/04 in his maiden season. Returned to Grasshoppers in 2002 and promptly secured the Swiss league crown, but resigned in October 2003 after a disappointing run. • Appointed by Köln the following month, he was sacked after the Bundesliga team finished the season bottom, yet bounced back at Bochum in 2005, earning promotion to the top tier in his first campaign. • Dismissed by Bochum in September 2009, Koller was installed as Austria coach on 4 October 2011, replacing Dietmar Constantini. Missed out on a place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup but earned a contract extension until December 2015. Fabio Capello Date of birth: 18 June 1946 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Spal 1907, AS Roma, Juventus, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Milan (twice), Real Madrid CF (twice), AS Roma, Juventus, England, Russia • Forged a successful playing career, winning four Serie A titles – three with Juventus, one with Milan – and scoring eight goals from midfield in 32 games for Italy, including the winner in the Azzurri's first victory over England at Wembley in November 1973. • Despite lacking coaching experience Capello replaced Arrigo Sacchi at Milan in 1991, launching a hugely impressive five-year spell in which he led a star-studded team to four Italian championships – the first without losing a match – and the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating Johan Cruyff's FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. • Left Milan for Real Madrid and lifted the Spanish title in his only season there before an unsuccessful return to Milan. Re-established himself as one of world's foremost coaches at both Roma, where he won the 2000/01 Scudetto, and Juventus, where he ended each of his two campaigns as Serie A champion – only for both titles to be revoked as a result of the sporting fraud scandal. • Another one-year Liga title-winning effort at Madrid (a decade after the first) prompted the Football Association (FA) to appoint him England coach. Took over in January 2008 and steered the side to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with eight straight victories. Stayed on for UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying despite failing to progress beyond the last 16 in South Africa and guided his charges to the finals in Poland and Ukraine. • Stood down from England in February 2012, less than four months before UEFA EURO 2012, but the following summer took the Russia job and led them to the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. Signed a contract extension in January 2014 to remain in charge until after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).
From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.
Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
