You have earned this honour through years of hard work, training and commitment . As you compete against Canada’s best young athletes and teams, and focus on achieving your personal best at the Games, I hope you will also take some time to enjoy the spirit and camaraderie that makes the Canada Games a cherished event – a celebration of youth, sport, culture and community . At the Canada Games, Alberta’s athletes are recognized as always competing with skill, confidence and a high degree of sportsmanship. I know you will carry on this tradition and also compete with pride and enthusiasm, and be excellent ambassadors for Alberta . I am tremendously proud of Team Alberta 2011 and I will be cheering for you along with all Albertans! Good luck to Team Alberta and to the rest of the nation’s athletes . Your years of hard work and commitment have paid off with the well-deserved honour of being selected to compete for your province in your sport against the best athletes from across our country . While you are there to do your best at this very prestigious event, I encourage you to take some time to enjoy the complete Canada Games experience . Whether it’s your competition, or the social and cultural events – I hope your involvement with these Games will leave you with a lifetime of great memories . Your participation and dedication to your sport is an example of the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle . The following media guide will provide you with insight into the 337 athletes, artists, coaches, managers and mission staff who will be representing Team Alberta at the 2011 Canada Winter Games . From February 11 – 27, 2011, Team Alberta will challenge the rest of the country as they strive to do their very best . The hard work, training, preparation and dedication by Team Alberta athletes, coaches, managers, artists and mission staff will be showcased as Alberta strives for personal best and podium finishes. To the athletes, coaches, managers, artists and mission staff, the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation would like to congratulate you on earning your place on Team Alberta . The Canada Games is an opportunity only a select few will ever get to experience . We know that for many of you this will be your stepping stone to future personal and athletic achievements on the national and international stage . Many parents will travel to support you in Halifax, while others will follow your performance through the media . The media will be closely following the results and stories of the games through the 80 hours of already committed national broadcast time, plus local television, newspaper and radio support . The media will play a critical role in allowing all enthusiastic Albertans to share in your achievements as a member of Team Alberta at the 2011Canada Winter Games . To the members of the media we would like to thank you for your continued support and coverage of our exceptional amateur athletes and coverage of this exciting competition and being an active partner in the development of sport in the great province of Alberta! 7 MESSAGE FROM THE CHEF DE MISSION It is with great pride and pleasure that I present the members of Team Alberta for the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia . Each member that is featured within the Media guide has dedicated countless hours towards his or her development as an athlete, artist, coach or manager . This commitment has earned them the right to compete in Canada’s largest amateur multi-sport festival . The Canada Games have proved to be a stepping stone for many of our country’s finest athletes and I am sure that within the ranks of Team Alberta we will see performances that will lead to a strong sporting future for many of the participants . On behalf of the Team, I would like to thank the media for the significant part that you play within the overall success of Team Alberta . Without your hours of writing and reporting of the events in Halifax, many of the family members and friends that remain in Alberta would not be able to follow our athlete’s progress . Your words and pictures will help form the many memories that all participants will take from their Nova Scotia experience . Alberta’s color’s are blue, white and grey . The blue portrays the vast prairie skies while the grey symbolizes winter . The lightening bolt in the logo reminds us of Alberta’s thunderstorms, but mostly it represents the power and electricity that Team Alberta athletes will possess in Halifax! The bolt is located on the southwest corner of the logo to indicate the location of the rugged Rocky Mountains in the province . Also, the lightening creates the shape of an evergreen tree symbolizing Alberta’s many forests, in the middle of the “A” . TEAM ALBERTA INFORMATION TEAM ALBERTA FACTS • Alberta, comprised of 22 teams, will compete in all 20 sports • Team Alberta will consist of 337 athletes, coaches, managers, artists and mission staff • 242 athletes, 74 coaches and managers, 3 artists and 18 mission staff • Week 1 (February 11 – 19) will feature 170 participants • Week 2 (February 19 – 27) will feature 189 participants • The artists & the mission staff will participate in both weeks . • 115 male athletes • 127 female athletes • 54% of the coaching staff is male and 46% of the coaching staff is female • Team Alberta is representative of 49 communities throughout Alberta • Team Alberta’s youngest athlete will be 10 year old Edward Guo (Table Tennis) of Edmonton • Team Alberta’s oldest athletes will be 23 year old Andrew Curtis (Wheelchair Basketball) from Edmonton, 23 year old David Emmerzael (Wheelchair Basketball) from Edmonton and 52 year old John Cornish (Cross Country Skiing Para Nordic) from Calgary .
