We've Had a Chili Cookoff Hot, HOT and HOTTER was the order of the day for the First Annual Holy Smokes Chili Cookoff held July 21st in Parker, Colorado. This first annual event drew contestants from Wyoming, Colorado, California, and CASI’s own Alan and Susan Dean represented Texas. There were also a lot of local cooks trying their hand at chili for the first time. With food vendors, kid’s activities, music, and a craft fair, there was plenty to keep the crowd entertained while the cooks tended their chili pots and salsa bowls.

Way back in May, Bob Coats put an article in the Terlingua TICC Gate Policy Trails in which he reminisced about a lot of things, specifically the changes he has seen in the chili world. Qualified cooks DO NOT receive additional wristbands if they are also Old 320 members and/or captains of a show team. You should know that Bob Coats won TICC in 1999, and Doris Coats won in 1991. Not only have they seen a lot, they’ve done a lot. I’ve read a good bit and talked to a few SHOW TEAMS: Each listed Show Team Captain receives one (1) wristband of our trailblazers, but that just doesn’t compare with having seen it with your own eyes. only if they are NOT qualified to cook or an Old 320 member. Bob talked about the changes in the chili world. It’s obvious that there have been many Members of listed Show Teams will pay to enter the gate and receive a changes, some good, and some maybe bad. I remember the 80’s from less exotic locales, and the free spirits were almost as free as in Terlingua. Of course when you are a OLD 320: Each listed Old 320 member and one (1) guest receive wristbands hundred miles from everywhere, nobody can see you except the other people that are in the only if they are NOT qualified to cook or show. Terlingua is still about as captains DO NOT receive wristbands in addition to the Old 320 wristband. remote as anyplace on this planet, but the whole world has become a little bit smaller, so maybe we are a bit more inhibited today. Oh, well. The world has changed right in front of me. Important Insurance Notice Besides the shrinking world, I’m not as good as I once was. It fact, I’m not even as good once as I once was. I can’t be as uninhibited as I was in the 80’s. Those to continue holding cookoffs. times are changing, too. Dana Plocheck may be the start of the new wave by winning with ground meat in 2006. More and more cookoffs are now specifying “Chili Grind Only,” and I don’t see any that are specifying “Cut Meat Only.” Will chili grind soon be the norm? The purpose of CASI insurance is to protect CASI and is not to protect those too foolish to protect themselves. Quite a few of us are beginning to use normal hamburger instead of any of the more exotic meats, and a bunch of us are cooking with “tube meat.” I haven’t seen any cookoffs requiring only “Plain Hamburger” yet, but could it happen? CASI rules don’t sanction Alan restricting the type of meat used, but they don’t say an organizer can’t restrict the meat.

Bob Coats laments the fact that all chili tastes the same. I choose to say that nobody makes “bad” chili anymore. Any new cook can visit the CASI website and find most of the TICC winning recipes. That’s a good place to start, but it tends to make all chilis pretty nearly Volunteers Needed for the Front the same. Tank Tops, Ladies T-Shirts, Bumper Stickers and Window Decals. Aprons, CASI Window Shades, Tote Several years ago (7 to be exact), Jim Stateczny asked me if maybe I would like to write something to go into The Trails each month and I said sure. With the help of Harry, we Bags. 2006 Posters and some previous years have been trying to send something out each month that will be a little interesting for you available. to read. In case you don’t know it, ask any person who writes an article or column on a regular basis how hard it is. Sort of what someone famous said once, “You can please Dorathy Williams 1-888-227-4468 or email some of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all the people all the time.” [email protected]

Have you got some spare time on your hands while at TICC? There are several areas soliciting volunteers: front gate, veggie cutting, registration, concession sales, and beer sales – to name a few. Look for the October Terlingua Trails for a complete listing of those areas needing assistance. As always, your willingness to volunteer is very much appreciated. Boomer Kingston presenting 1st Place Chili Trophy to Ralph Hay Conroe suffered a heat wave on Saturday, August 11th, but that didn’t stop the cooks from coming out to enjoy the 30th Annual Texas Open Chili Cookoff. We had 166 cooks from Texas, Louisiana and Georgia endure the sweltering heat to compete for 1st Place Texas Open Show winner Donn Shands top honors on what was probably the hottest day we’ve had in this area all year. Even the public braved the heat as folks came from near and far to judge chili and/or participate in the car and bike show helping the Texas Open raise money for three great H. S. “Hut” Brown Middle School charities – The Texas Gulf Coast Trade Center, the Texas Honor Ride and the Montgomery County Women’s Center. Donna Conrad and Dianne Stimson’s hard The El Paso Independent School District held an open house on Thursday, work and dedication on making the car and bike show a success shined thru with the August 9, to allow the community to see El Paso’s newest school – H. S. “Hut” overwhelming turn-out for our first year. Great job ladies! And a big “Thank You” Brown Middle School. to our Charities for all their hard work in the insufferable heat which helped in the success of this cook-off. If you are in the El Paso area, drop by 7820 Helen of Troy and see the school The party started Friday night with a buffet consisting of smoked pork loins and hors named to honor our very own Hut Brown! d’oeuvres and later converged to Casino style games and a 42 tournament. Nigel Delgado kept us entertained with his music while The Original Pearl Cookers (Ed & Mayo Blair) hosted an Open Bar. Thanks to Janice and Linda with Bruce Foods for Chili Ambassadors smoking the pork loins for us, they were delicious!!!

Saturday featured a Junior Chili Competition with 25 entries. But there was a twist to the competition this year as the Juniors competed with spices mixed by TICC Champions and this year’s Texas Men State, Texas Ladies State and Mexico International Champions. Keith Karaff and Michael Mayorga custom designed the stoves for the top ten winners and provided handcrafted trophies for 11th thru 20th place. Kolby Karaff, 15, from Richmond, TX, took first place and became the 2007 Texas Open Junior Champion.

The day ended with a BBQ celebration and Open Bar in honor of Karin & Phil Barnes’s 25th Wedding Anniversary courtesy of The Original Pearl Cookers. Nigel again provided music for our entertainment while the wine flowed.

In the end Ralph Hay beats the heat and receives top honors as the 2007 Texas Open Champion with Cary Plocheck placing 2nd, Kenneth Swart from Georgia placing 3rd and Tejas Medicineman, Donn Shands, winning 1st Place Show.

Thanks again to all the organizers, sponsors, cooks, and everyone who volunteered and helped with all the things necessary for a successful CCO. We couldn’t have done it without you. Charity, chili and fun…let’s keep CASI going. Thanks! Saturday the winner was Kim Dvorak from Reno, NV, and Sundays winner was Kathy Hulme from Hobbs, NM. Considering "On June 6th, 2000, a bolt of lightning struck me and totally changed my life. the caliber of the cooks in attendance this was no small achievement. I was diagnosed with Stage IIIc ovarian cancer. I went from skipping through life with a great job, a busy family, and doing lots of extra meaningless things, Joe Price to the world of no job, no hair, and worse yet no eyelashes, and no independence. After a few months of reeling back and looking at the beautiful family I have and good medical care, I finally stood up and began to appreciate everything, and I mean everything. I drew my children and grandchildren Oregon Trail Days Winners closer to me as well as friends, I started to plant flowers, travel, delight in each day and to interact with other ovarian cancer survivors.

"I recurred 6 months after finishing my first round of treatments and had another round at that time. Two years ago my CA 125 started to rise again and MD Anderson put me on shots of Lupron every 3 months. It is experimental with ovarian cancer but is used for breast and prostate cancer. It is a hormone blocker. My CA 125 has dropped, but not to a normal range. So I guess you can call this a recurrence. My doctor is just trying to hold back actual chemo as long as possible.

"So, no, I am not in remission but receiving treatment for my "chronic" disease. I read all I can about new treatments and options. I laugh more, cry more, and don't listen to trivial gripes and complaints of others. It is good to be alive and looking forward to each day, no matter how many more of them I have, I will make the most of each of them. At first I prayed for one more Christmas, now I have had many of them. No one knows what is ahead of them, with or without ovarian cancer. You get the message, live each day and enjoy each minute!"
