Chapman & Hall.”2 Since the early years of the twentieth century, however, Dickens’s critics and readers have largely ignored the apparent significance of this “new, complete edition of Dickens, reset in large type on a quarto page, and furnished with entirely new illustrations by a fresh set of artists”3 which appeared between 1871 and 1879 in weekly numbers (at 1d.), monthly parts (at 6d.), and volume form (at between 2s. -

Thackeray, Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope to the Cornhill Magazine, All the Year Round and Saint Pauls Magazine, analyzing their cultivation of a familiar or personal style of journalism in the context of the 1860s family magazine and its rhetoric of intimacy. Focusing on their first-person journalistic series, it argues that these writers/editors used these contributions as a means of establishing a seemingly intimate and personal relationship with their readers, and considers the various techniques that they used to develop that relationship, including their use of first-person narration, autobiography, the anecdote, dream sequences and memory. It contends that those same contributions questioned and critiqued the depiction of reader-writer relations which they simultaneously propagated, highlighting the distinction between this portrayal and the realities of the industrialized and commercialized world of periodical journalism. It places this within the context of the discourse of family that was integral to the identity of these magazines, demonstrating how these series both held up and complicated the idealized image of Victorian domesticity that was promoted by the mainstream periodical culture of the day, maintaining that this was a standard feature of family magazine journalism and theorizing that this was in fact a large part of its popular appeal to the family market. -

AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ANTHONY TROLLOPE PREFACE. It may be well that I should put a short preface to this book. In the summer of 1878 my father told me that he had written a memoir of his own life. He did not speak about it at length, but said that he had written me a letter, not to be opened until after his death, containing instructions for publication. This letter was dated 30th April, 1876. I will give here as much of it as concerns the public: "I wish you to accept as a gift from me, given you now, the accompanying pages which contain a memoir of my life. My intention is that they shall be published after my death, and be edited by you. But I leave it altogether to your discretion whether to publish or to suppress the work;—and also to your discretion whether any part or what part shall be omitted. But I would not wish that anything should be added to the memoir. If you wish to say any word as from yourself, let it be done in the shape of a preface or introductory chapter." At the end there is a postscript: "The publication, if made at all, should be effected as soon as possible after my death." My father died on the 6th of December, 1882. It will be seen, therefore, that my duty has been merely to pass the book through the press conformably to the above instructions. I have placed headings to the right-hand pages throughout the book, and I do not conceive that I was precluded from so doing. -

Sep. 2021 454 DICKENS QUARTERLY Only one caveat (and it might not be that so much as a longing): We are introduced to Charles Dickens and His Publishers, as “a penultimate draft of ffteen chapters,” and “a huge parcel of materials” when Patten submitted it to OUP for consideration. But, I mean, have you read the book? It is a magnifcent collection of facts and insights straight from the hands and mind of a young man, a recent PhD, whose dissertation wasn’t even the basis for this study. -

Dickens’s Death Takashi TERAUCHI Charles Dickens lived from 1812 to 1870. By 1857 he had been looked upon as ‘a very Joseph in all that regards morality, chastity, and decorum’ (Letters 8: 745), but for the subsequent 13 years he lived a very different life from the one he had done so far; he, though having Ellen Ternan as his mistress, denied the fact to the public: he lived a great sinner, and died without any public confession. Could he have taken no notice of his sin in life at all? That would be impossible, because he, who was essentially a man of a gentle Christian mind as he had written ‘the children’s New Testament’ in 1846, lost the mind for a time but recovered it in 1860. In the present essay, it will be revealed that he was so severely afflicted with his sin that he denied his own existence himself. Victorian Temper—self-denial and an obsession with death The ideas of self-denial and an obsession with death may be counted among the characteristics of the Victorian temper (Buckley91; Houghton 276-77; Milward75); Dickens was one of the Victorian writers who displayed such characteristics. The historical background of the compound word ‘self-denial’ is as follows. The word itself appeared in the 17th century, but the concept of ‘denying oneself’ is almost as old as the history of human beings, because a man, who is an imperfect being, is often required to deny and renew himself. Saul (or Paul) of Tarsus, for example, converted from a persecutor of the early Christian Church into an apostle of Christ Jesus after being hit by a light from heaven: Saul ultimately denied and regenerated himself (Letters 4: xii, 573 & n.; Dickens, The Life … 121-23).
