One day when heavy rains turned the Lower Pacuare into a raging torrent, Diego said that he would have liked to paddle with us, but that his worried wife would not let him. By the end of that eventful day we all agreed that Diego's wife was a wise woman indeed! Riding shotgun in the shuttle truck was to be an interesting multicultural experience. Diego was, of course, fluent in Spanish. He spoke only a little English, but was deter- mined to learn more. Like most Ger- mans, Andreas seemed fluent in every language; his English was excellent and, as best I could tell, his Spanish was too. Of course I couldn't tell for sure, since my Spanish is so rudimen- tary that when I ordered food in a res- taurant I never knew what to expect. My knowledge of German is a tad bet- ter. In the eve- nings we would wander around Turrialba, sampling the tropical fruit and ice cream, watching the sloths hanging from the trees in the town park, and joining the locals in last- minute Christmas shopping. We went to the movies and to a holiday mass. By the end of the week Turrialba was starting to feel like home. The $7 billion campaign to expand China’s soft power has significantly increased its media presence. But are these media offensive efforts effective? But I never realized how biased the programs were until I traveled back home recently after studying and working in journalism in the United States for five years. In the half-hour show, international news normally takes 5 to 10 minutes, most of which report on negative news around the world, such as riots in the Middle East or the economic crisis in Europe.

UC Berkeley Survey Reports, Survey of California and Other Indian Languages Title The Plank Canoe of Southern California: Not a Polynesian Import, but a Local Innovation Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/1977t6ww Author Meroz, Yoram Publication Date 2013 eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California The Plank Canoe of Southern California: Not a Polynesian Import, but a Local Innovation YORAM MEROZ By nearly a millennium ago, Polynesians had settled most of the habitable islands of the eastern Pacific, as far east as Easter Island and as far north as Hawai‘i, after journeys of thousands of kilometers across open water. It is reasonable to ask whether Polynesian voyagers traveled thousands of kilometers more and reached the Americas. Despite much research and speculation over the past two centuries, evidence of contact between Polynesia and the Americas is scant. At present, it is generally accepted that Polynesians did reach South America, largely on the basis of the presence of the sweet potato, an American cultivar, in prehistoric East Polynesia. More such evidence would be significant and exciting; however, no other argument for such contact is currently free of uncertainty or controversy.1 In a separate debate, archaeologists and ethnologists have been disputing the rise of the unusually complex society of the Chumash of Southern California. Chumash social complexity was closely associated with the development of the plank-built canoe (Hudson et al. 1978), a unique technological and cultural complex, whose origins remain obscure (Gamble 2002). In a recent series of papers, Terry Jones and Kathryn Klar present what they claim is linguistic, archaeological, and ethnographical evidence for prehistoric contact from Polynesia to the Americas (Jones and Klar 2005, Klar and Jones 2005).

Being in this business provides me with such a wonderful opportunity; it’s part of how I pay those bills. Occasionally, I am compensated by the products and services I recommend. It is sometimes direct; it is sometimes indirect; but it is there. If this offends you, no problem; this isn’t content for you. Return this book. We can still be friends. At all times, I only recommend products I use – or would tell my Mom to use. You have my promise there. PINBALL NVRAM GAME LIST This list was created to make it easier for customers to figure out what type of NVRAM they need for each machine. Please consult the product pages at www.pinitech.com for each type of NVRAM for further information on difficulty of installation, any jumper changes necessary on your board(s), a diagram showing location of the RAM being replaced & more. *NOTE: This list is meant as quick reference only. On Williams WPC and Sega/Stern Whitestar games you should check the RAM currently in your machine since either a 6264 or 62256 may have been used from the factory. On Williams System 11 games you should check that the chip at U25 is 24-pin (6116). See additional diagrams & notes at http://www.pinitech.com/products/cat_memory.php for assistance in locating the RAM on your board(s). PLUG-AND-PLAY (NO SOLDERING) Games below already have an IC socket installed on the boards from the factory and are as easy as removing the old RAM and installing the NVRAM (then resetting scores/settings per the manual). • BALLY 6803 → 6116 NVRAM • SEGA/STERN WHITESTAR → 6264 OR 62256 NVRAM (check IC at U212, see website) • DATA EAST → 6264 NVRAM (except Laser War) • CLASSIC BALLY → 5101 NVRAM • CLASSIC STERN → 5101 NVRAM (later Stern MPU-200 games use MPU-200 NVRAM) • ZACCARIA GENERATION 1 → 5101 NVRAM **NOT** PLUG-AND-PLAY (SOLDERING REQUIRED) The games below did not have an IC socket installed on the boards. This means the existing RAM needs to be removed from the board & an IC socket installed.

DEFENSE SPEECH Discovering and listening to music has always been my biggest passion in life and my primary way of coping with my emotions. I think its main appeal to me since childhood has been the comfort it brings in knowing that at some point in time, another human felt the same thing as me and was able to survive and express it by making something beautiful. For my project, I recorded a 9 track album called Strange Machines while I was on leave of absence last year. This term, I created a 20 minute extended music video to accompany it. All of this lives on a page I coded on my personal website with some fun bonus content that I’ll scroll through at the end of this presentation. I’ll put the link in the comments so anyone who’s interested can check it out at their own pace. I have so much fun making music and feel proud when I have a cohesive finished product at the end. I’m not interested in becoming a virtuoso musician or a professional producer. A lot of trained musicians gatekeep, intimidate, and discourage amateurs. People mystify and mythologize the creative process as if it’s the product of some elusive, innate genius rather than practice, experimentation, and a simple love of music. As someone who’s work exists entirely as digital recordings, there’s no inherent reason for me to be an amazing guitar player who can play a song perfectly all the way through, as mistakes can be easily cut out and re-recorded.
