REQUEST FOR SABBATICAL LEAVE. I am requesting a 100% sabbatical leave for the 2019-2020 academic year. Employed as a fulltime faculty member at Cerritos College since August 2005, I have never requested sabbatical leave during the past thirteen years of service. II. PURPOSE OF LEAVE Scientific advancements and technological capabilities, most notably within the last few decades, have evolved at ever-accelerating rates. Artists, like everyone else, now live in a contemporary world completely restructured by recent phenomena such as satellite imagery, augmented reality, digital surveillance, mass extinctions, artificial intelligence, prosthetic limbs, climate change, big data, genetic modification, drone warfare, biometrics, computer viruses, and social media (and that’s by no means meant to be an all-inclusive list). -

Uneasy bodies, femininity and death: Representing the female corpse in fashion photography and selected contemporary artworks. by Thelma van Rensburg 88270442 Dissertation submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for MASTERS OF ARTS degree in FINE ARTS In the DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL ARTS FACULTY OF HUMANITIES UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA SUPERVISOR: Dr Johan Thom August 2016 © University of Pretoria THELMA VAN RENSBURG ABSTRACT This mini-dissertation serves as a framework for my own creative practice. In this research paper my intention is to explore, within a feminist reading, representations of the female corpse in fashion photography and art. The cultural theorist Stuart Hall’s theories on the concept of representation are utilised to critically analyse and interogate selected images from fashion magazines, which depicts the female corpse in an idealised way. Such idealisation manifests in Western culture, in fashion magazines, as expressed in depictions of the attractive/ seductive/fine-looking female corpse. Fashion photographs that fit this description are critically contrasted and challenged to selected artworks by Penny Siopis and Marlene Dumas, alongside my own work, to explore how the female corpse can be represented, as strategy to undermine the aesthetic and cultural objectification of the female body. Here the study also explores the selected artists’ utilisation of the abject and the grotesque in relation to their use of artistic mediums and modes of production as an attempt to create ambiguous and conflicting combinations of attraction and repulsion (the sublime aesthetic of delightful horror), thereby confronting the viewer with the notion of the objectification of the decease[d] feminine body as object to-be-looked-at. -

Hoi Yee Chau Abstract This thesis starts from the premise that I consider there to be an increase in split portraiture, and that this is because it speaks to certain conditions in modern and contemporary art. ‘Split portraiture’ is a term I use throughout and it means an artwork created on more than one surface; the work could be on panels, screens or any other surfaces with its specificity. My objectives are to investigate the specificity of this particular type of art practice, to discuss modern and contemporary subjects revealed in it, and to study the change in identification and in the way aggressiveness is perceived in the light of Lacanian discourse. I identify the specificity of split portraits including the discontinuity, split, the multiplication of certain elements and the repetition in the creation process. I also argue that vacillation, emptiness, the split, and the traumatic are present in contemporary subjectivity. In addition, I find an important element in my practice -- aggressiveness -- is concealed in the single-panel portraits whereas it manifests in split portraits. The contribution of this thesis is four-fold. First, this thesis addresses the specificity of the split portrait which has been extensively discussed in the literature. Secondly, this thesis is among the first to enrich the understanding of split portraiture related to art practice in the light of Lacanian discourse. -

Right Away, Sir/Ma’am!, Manuel Ocampo returns for his fourth solo exhibition at Tyler Rollins Fine Art, taking place from March 1 through April 14, 2018. The exhibition features large-scale paintings inspired in part by the work of Theodor de Bry (1528–1598), known for his detailed and sometimes fanciful engravings of the native inhabitants of the Americas and their recent contacts with European explorers and colonists. Ocampo intermixes scenes from these works with motifs taken from American political cartoons from the period of the Philippine American War (1899-1902), with their often outrageous ethnic stereotypes. That war is considered by many to be “America’s frst Vietnam War,” and its years of invasions, insurgency, and atrocities remain a major touchstone in Philippine history, although they are largely forgotten in the US. Through the juxtaposition of imagery from two historical periods of contact and confict between the Western and non-Western worlds, Ocampo explores the evolving role of visual representations in colonial expansion, both as complicit agents and as modes of resistance, while also refecting on themes relating to personal identity, race, and migration that seem so relevant today. Ocampo’s new works were prepared in an open studio at the gallery, in which other artists were invited to collaborate. Based in New York, the Philippines, and Europe, they include: DaZe, Jigger CruZ, Irene Iré, LaZaro Juan, Gorka Mohamed, Todd Richmond, Roger Kleier, Paolo Javier, and Jevijoe Vitug. -

Doyle Professor of English, Science, Technology and Society, and Information Science and Technology Nancy Locke Associate Professor of Art History Craig Zabel Associate Professor of Art History Head of the Department of Art History *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii Abstract This dissertation examines the ways that five contemporary artists—Mark Dion (b. 1961), Fred Tomaselli (b. 1956), Walton Ford (b. 1960), Roxy Paine (b. 1966) and Cy Twombly (b. 1928)—have adopted the visual traditions and theoretical formulations of historical natural history to explore longstanding relationships between “nature” and “culture” and begin new dialogues about emerging paradigms, wherein plants, animals and fungi engage in ecologically-conscious dialogues. Using motifs such as curiosity cabinets and systems of taxonomy, these artists demonstrate a growing interest in the paradigms of natural history. For these practitioners natural history operates within the realm of history, memory and mythology, inspiring them to make works that examine a scientific paradigm long thought to be obsolete. This study, which itself takes on the form of a curiosity cabinet, identifies three points of consonance among these artists. -
