Dele foram impressos quatro volumes de música na conhecida Oficina Plantiniana de Antuérpia, uma das mais conceituadas casas de impressão europeias. Em Portugal ainda fez imprimir na Casa Craesbeeck duas edições de cantochão. Contudo, é um dos poucos compositores portugueses cuja obra não foi editada em tempos modernos. Apesar de já terem sido editadas algumas obras do Liber Missarum de 1621, a identificação em Maio de 2012 de um volume deste livro de missas na Sé de Angra, conduziu à transcrição de três missas-paródia deste livro, que utilizam como modelo motetes do compositor espanhol Francisco Guerrero. Partindo da relação entre cada um dos modelos e respectivas missas pretende este estudo contribuir para uma melhor compreensão dos processos de imitação e emulação ainda utilizados pelos compositores portugueses no início do século XVII, centrando-se na análise do processo de composição presente nas três missas de Duarte Lobo, enquadrando-os no contexto ibérico da imitação de mestres conceituados como Francisco Guerrero e Cristóbal de Morales e a influência que estes tiveram nas gerações seguintes, onde se inclui Duarte Lobo. v ABSTRACT The Three Masses on Motets by Francisco Guerrero in the Liber Missarum of 1621: An Analytical View of their Construction Process Luís Carlos Fortuna Henriques KEYWORDS: polyphony, Duarte Lobo, Francisco Guerrero, Liber Missarum, parody mass Duarte Lobo was one of the most internationally distinguished Portuguese composers during his time. four volumes of his music were printed at the famous Oficina Plantiniana in Antwerp, one of the most reputable European printing houses. In Portugal he arranged for the printing of two editions of plainchant at the Craesbeeck house in Lisbon. Nevertheless, he is one of the few Portuguese composers whose work was not fully edited in modern times. Although some works from the 1621 Liber Missarum have already been edited, the identification in May 2012 of a volume of this book of masses at Angra Cathedral led to the transcription of three parody masses from this book, which use as a model motets by the Spanish composer Francisco Guerrero. Starting from the relation between each of the models and the respective masses this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the processes of imitation and emulation still in use by the Portuguese composers at the beginning of the seventeenth century, focusing on the analysis of the process of composition present in the three masses by Duarte Lobo, putting them in the Iberian context of the imitation of established masters like Francisco Guerrero and Cristóbal de Morales and the influence they had on the following generations, where Duarte Lobo is included. vi ÍNDICE PARTE I: ESTUDO Introdução ........................................................................................................... 1 1. Duarte Lobo: Missa Elisabeth Zachariae ...................................... 229 viii PARTE I ESTUDO ix INTRODUÇÃO O trabalho que ora se apresenta tem como objecto de estudo três das oito missas do compositor português Duarte Lobo que compõem o seu primeiro livro de missas, impresso em Antuérpia em 1621. Duarte Lobo foi um dos poucos compositores que não foram contemplados com a edição moderna da sua obra completa na colecção Portugaliae Musica, patrocinada pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian durante os anos sessenta e setenta. Do Liber Missarum foram editadas as missas Veni Domine, Cantate Domino e Pro Defunctis assim como os motetes Audivi vocem de caelo e Pater peccavi, às quais se juntaram recentemente as recentes edições das antífonas Asperges me e Vidi aquam.1 O tema abordado – a missa-paródia e as implicações nas três missas de Lobo – apareceu no seguimento do trabalho de catalogação do fundo musical do Arquivo Capitular da Sé de Angra, onde identifiquei três impressos de polifonia de Manuel Cardoso e Duarte Lobo, onde se inclui um volume do Liber Missarum, o décimo quarto a ser identificado. A projecção inicial desta descoberta – a primeira no Arquipélago dos Açores – conduziu à necessidade da edição musical do conteúdo do livro assim como a um estudo mais aprofundado do seu conteúdo. É neste espírito que surge este trabalho que não pretende enveredar por uma abordagem biográfica de Lobo, já traçada com bastante detalhe por José

Only these are able to smoothly draw a global and coherent picture of their field of study. So, if you are not a specialist (even if you have a deep interest for the field) and you occupy your days working in an entirely different subject (say the physics of muonium states in semiconductors), you are surely in trouble! There are two possible solutions for this dilemma: a) ask a specialist and b) do it à la Newton (even if you're not one), climbing in the shoulders of giants. The mountaineering option was adopted here, and four giants helped me in viewing higher: Rui Vieira Nery and Paulo Ferreira de Castro with their História da Música [1], João de Freitas Branco with his História da Música Portuguesa [2] and José Carlos Travassos Cortez with his passioned and illuminating lessons on the history of Portuguese music that I was lucky to attend in the Conservatório de Musica de Coimbra [3]. I am very pleased to dedicate this work to his memory. Apart from Refs. [1-3], which are available in Portuguese only, all the other references are relative to introductory notes of compact-discs and are generally available in English as well. Of course these discographic indications are not extensive, but I believe they constitute a basis (surely not the only one!) for a good start in Portuguese-specialized melomania.

I argue that the proliferation of books by past and then-present authors and emerging expectations of textual and logical coherence led to the coalescence and formalization of music theory as a field of inquiry. By comparing multiple copies of single books about music, I show how readers employed a wide range of strategies to understand the often confusing subject of music. Similarly, I show how their authors and printers responded in turn, making their books more readable and user-friendly while attempting to profit from the enterprise. In exploring the complex negotiations among authors of books about music, their printers, and their readers, I seek to demonstrate how printing technology enabled authors and readers to engage with one another in unprecedented and meaningful ways. It is well known that Portuguese musical practices during this period, especially with regard to sacred polyphony, resembled those of other European cultures, however, there is more to this narrative. Knowing that the transatlantic slave trade was one of the major consequences of colonialism, and that by the 16th-century Black Africans represented more than 10% of the population in Lisbon and other cities in Portugal makes it crucial to consider Black Africans as major agents of cultural transfer. As the groundbreaking work of historians Kate Lowe, A. C. de C. M. Saunders and José Tinhorão demonstrates, the presence of Africans had a significant impact on Portuguese social and cultural life. Contemporary written and visual sources (such as paintings) demonstrate that, for instance, music from sub-Saharan Africa was performed in a variety of situations and on different levels of society: in the squares and taverns of early modern Lisbon, in religious processions around the country, and at the Portuguese court.

The life, music, and theoretical writings of Pietro Pontio (1532-1596) yield considerable insight into questions of theory and practice in the late sixteenth century. The dissertation places Pontio within his musical and cultural milieu, and assesses his role as both theorist and composer. The first two chapters present an expanded biography based on new archival evidence. The course of Pontio's career is detailed, and corrections such as his exact date of death and his location and employment for the years 1569- 1574 are presented. The documents also uniquely detail the working conditions and pedagogical methods and concerns of the sixteenth-century maestro di cappella. Chapter Three surveys Pontio's two treatises, the Ragionamento (1588) and the Dialogo (1595), outlining impor- tant issues addressed by Pontio. Chapter Four presents a brief survey of Pontio's music, hitherto unstudied, showing his work to be of consistent quality and inventiveness. Chapter Five discusses issues from the Ragionamento.
