* * COMMENT; The 1939 All-Southern California High School Football Team, as chosen by ALL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOARD OF FOOTBALL, is p o ssib ly the vary finest ' collection of high school football talent that has ever been moulded into a mythical all-star prep school lineup. Several of the boys who have been chosen for honors might easily be listed on an all-time Southern California prep school football team. Never before has an All-Southern California high school team boasted of two high-scoring flankmen the like of Willie Peters and ^eorge Harryman, Peters, only a junior, is regarded the finest pass receiver ever to perform upon a Southern California prep school gridiron. The Santa Bar bara end, a Negro youth, caught 12 touchdown passes this year — for a total of 72 points. Lanky George Harryman, of Hemet, the other end, has chalked up 36 points this year* Almost as much may be said of the defensive play of these two boys, Peters is exceptionally strong on defense. In fact, he was probably the best defensive end in Southern California high school ranks. Both Harryman and Peters are juniors» 'Harryman, however, will not be able to compete next year — due to eligibility rulings as to his age. The tackle positions on the All-Southern California are par ticularly strong. Harrison* of Covina, a tall 185 pounder, and Charles De Coudres, husky Long Beach boy, the son of a former Long Beach High School grid star, were outstanding in every game played this year* De Coudres was a strong blocker, rugged on defense, and called the plays for his team, Harrison was an aggressive player, fast for his size, and strong on defense as well as offense, Harrison is considered one of the finest linesmen to ever represent Covina High School — a school that has developed many out standing players in the past.

Two Bay League players, Bernard Schulz, of Inglewood, and E lliott Olds, of Rtídondo, captured the guard positions on the All-Southern Cali fornia. Both boys were standouts throughout the season. Schulz was one of the finest running guards seen on a Southern California prep school gridiron in the last two years, and did a fine job in backing up the Inglewood line. Olds was a husky, rugged player who particularly shone on defense, Walter Brown, of Canoga lark, was unanimously chosen for the center berth, Walter, a tall 207 pounder, played brilliantly — both on offense and defense. He very frequently ch«iy,ed through the opponent forward wall and pulled down the ball carrier before he was able to reach the line of scrimmage. In auditicu to his sterling defensive play, Brown carried the b u ll on c e rta in p la y s, passed end kicked, Memoers of A ll Southern C a lifo rn ia Boara oi Foot Dull hove - iiuouncuo that they .

COMMENT: YNAT A FOOTBALL TEAM J Í The A ll-S outhern C a lifo rn ia Ju n io r College F o o tb all Team fo r 1939, as chosen by ;'LL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BOaRD OF FOOT BALL, would compare favorably with many college elevens, The line is rugged and fast, while the backfield has everything to make it a very potent unit. Straw and Tomerlin, ft the ends, are brilliant pass receivers, and both are fine defensive flankmen. Yon Ginkle and Ross are two of the best tackles to ever compete for a Southern California junior college outfit — both weighing well over £00 pounds, Mickelwait and Workman are splendid running gurrds, good blockers and both axe fast, Don Edon, at center, has played exceptionally well throughout tho yoar — doing his work on a 60 min ute schedule, Eden is an excellent down-field blocker, and has spsrklcd in backing up th e li n e , Tho All-Southern California J.C, backfield lacks nothing, Allen, Leyrer and Finney are all fine open-field runners — fast and shifty; Hender son docs a nifty bit of line smashing; Finney and Alien are exceptional forward passers, while Harvey Rife is one of those super blockers, no less. Handsrson is a long distance kicker, while Finney is also capable punter.

* * * COMMENT: The All-Metropolitan Division Junior College Team wouldn't steamroller its way over an opposing squads Its lack of size is definitely noticeable, ( Ia fact, there isn't a 200 pounder in the lineup*) However, the All-Metropolitan is a strenghty outfit, from the flanks to the fullback post. The line, as well as the backfield, is lightning fast. Don Eden, at center, is a standout. He is a 60 minute player, he hack -■ the line and does a lot of down-field blockings He has proven r fine man on pass defense. Bill Hose end A1 Lightner, at the guard positions, pack plenty of wallop. Hose shines particularly on defense, while Lightner is a splendid biockerB The tackle assignments have been give to A1 Sohlect and George Van Pelt, a couple of rugged boys who have a habit of breaking up opponent plays, The All--Metropolitan's ends are brilliant oifsi.sive players. Curtis Straw, one of the finest ends in Santa Monica Junior Colley history, has tallied 24 points this year, while Clem Tomerlin has gathered in enough touchdown passes to register 30 points„ Both flcnkmen have shown to advantage on defense» Hubert niiun, quarterback, would do the pissing for the squad. There was no better passer in Southland junior college ranks this year, Harry Sar tor! .and Curtis Mechum would do the line smashing, Allen and John Seedbérg would handle wide-end sweeps, while Fred Rhode and Mechum would take care of blocking duties. The kicking assignments would be turned oner to Curtis Mechum.

Team of 1939 would compare favor- ■ ably with any Orange Empire mythical all-star teem of the past. It has every thing necessary to make up an outstanding team — weight, speed, defensive strength and offensive strength. The ends, Thomas and L u g in b ill, are e x c e p tio n a lly strong — both defensively and offensively. Van Ginkle and Ross, at the tackle posts, are two of the finest linemen who have ever competed in the Orcnge Empire Division. Both boys are tall, heavy and strong, and are the iron-man type. Mickelwait and Workman, the gurrd3, have been outstanding in every game this year. Work man --nd Mickelwait are excellent blockers and are fast. Huge Bruce Twerrell, at center, has played sensationally. He is a hard man to get by, .active for his 300 pounds, and is a splendid field general, calling signals. The brckfield is really SOMETHING. Leyrer, Finney and Monroy are fine running backs. Leyrer, in particular, has exceptional speed. Henderson is splendid line crasher, using r 11 of h is 190 pounds to do the job, while Harvey Rife is a terrific blocker and exceptional defensive back. Hal Finney., one of the most accurate passers in Southern California, would do the pass tossing for the squad, while Henderson could do a lot of long distance punting . * * * COMMENTS: Well. . .there it is! The All-Los Angeles City High School Football Team for 1939. It is good enough to be wrapped in cellophane and be placed under any football fan's Christmas tree. . , no less. I t re q u ire d members of A ll Southern C a lifo rn ia Board of Football more than five hours to finally select the All-City team. There were many differences of opinion among members of the Board. The Tackle, Guard and Halfback posts gave members of the Board their greatest difficulty. Driscoll Truitt ran Roy Provence a merry chase for honors, Bob Donnelley provided Frank Glave plenty of competition for the Guard spot, while it was a matter of choosing between Leon McCardle and Eddie Harrison for a backfield assignment. In making many of the s e le c tio n s , members of A ll Southern C a lifo rn ia Board of Football gave careful consideration to the recommendations of coaches and op ponent coaches. Two other players who won high praise from Board members, ani who almost captured first team berths, were Jack Boyer, Huntington Park Guard, and Gilbert Cate, Verdugo Hills blocking back.

* * * COMMENTS ( Continued )

Although the All-City team isn't any juggernaught in size, ( and yet, it would out-weigh the famed Notre Dame team of 1924 — with its Tour Horsemen — by 8 pounds to the man ) it has everything to make it a formidable unit. The All-City team, es it has been mythically designed by All Southern California Board of Football, possesses a hard running attack, an aerial attack, good punting, and excellent blocking. And, of importance, the All-City team packs plenty of defensive strength. Heywood and Chiniquy, at the ends, are strong defensively, and both are splendid pass receivers. Heywood scored 18 points this year, while Chiniquy tallied 30 points. In addition to his pass receiving, Chininuy ex perienced fine success on end-around plays, Heywood was a fine punter, doing the kicking for his team at Huntington Park. Seymour Fuhrman, of the Hollywood High School eleven, was some what of a surprise selection. Playing for a losing team, Fuhrman was a standout in every game, and reoeived more votes from opponent coaches than any other tackle in the city. Like Los Angeles High School's blocking back of 1938, Bob Nelson, Fuhrman was an unsung hero until opponent coaches* recommendations began pouring in, Roy Provence, at the other tacklQpost, proved his worth throughout the past season with his fine offensive and defensive play. However, Driscoll Truitt, Narbonne Tackle, gave Provence a lot of competition for first team honors. 'The guard assignments were toughest for members of All Southern California Board of Football to fill, ¿vfter several ballots were taken, Kurken Kazarian, of Polytechnic, nosed out Jack Boyer of Huntington Park, while Frank Glave, Fairfax boy, gained the nod over Bob Donnelley of Los Angeles. Kazarian was a definite shandout in the Polytechnic line, game after gams, and did the extra point kicking. Glava was an alert, aggressive player who caused opponent squads no end of tro u b le , Walter Brown, huge 207 pound Canoga Park Center, had worthy competition for the All-City Center berth, but his play during the season was sp brilliant that it didn't require members of the Board very long to decide on the c en ter p o s itio n . W alter Brown was tr u ly th e Los Angeles C ity High School player of the year. In addition to his fine work at the center post, he backed the line, and even ran with the ball on occasions, passed on certain plays, and did the kicking for his team. Bill O’Rourke, the mighty atom, captured the quarterback spot. Bill was an elusive runner, very hard to stop, end did a neat job of passing the leather. He was a smell package of TNT in an open field. Bill obtained the recommendations of seven opponent coaches, and when you figure that Hunting ton Park only played 8 games this year, you have something there! Tom Follaid, Jefferson's scintillating ball packer, was the scoring threat in the Democrat's eleven. He chalked up 55 points during the season. Edelson referred to Pollard es the greatest "offensive back Jefferson High School ever had," Leon McCardle, ^anusl Arts halfback, was a real triple-threater. He runs like "sixty", but has piled up more yards than that on some of his runs; he punts consistently over 40 yrrds; he passes accurately, and won several games for Manual Arts with his place-kicking toe, ( Extra points. ) Hoyt Smith, Eagle Rock fullback, was a very vaulable player to his team. He received many recommendations from opponent coaches, and was given high praise by his own coach, Kenny Griffin, Smith is a hard line plunger, calls signals from a fullback post, passes well, is a fine blocker, and as captain of his team was an inspiration to fellow players. Henry Binkley, Narbonne blocking back, was a standout in every contest. His hard, sure blocking was an important factor in the success of the Narbonne eleven which won the Marine League championship. © LA84 Foundation. * * COMMENT: In back of an exceptionally strong forward wall, the All-Southern League team has e backfield that possesses plenty of punch. Leon MoC^rdle is a fast-stepping back who can also pass and kick; Pollard, the highest scoring back in the city, is a constant touchdown threat, while big George Phillips, who stands 6* 4, is a hard-plunging back. Phillips also passes and punts. Frank Conroy end Fred Benavidez era excellent blockers, while Conroy handles safety chores without fault. In the line, adelman is an exceptional defensive player, and a smart one. Frank Snyder, the only junior on the team, is very aggressive, and capably takes care of pass-receiving duties. Andy Aitken and Bob Harris are both rugged tackles who shine on defense. Aitken has a habit of blocking kicksc The All-Southern boasts two strong guards, both of whom, Kurken Kazarian and Pete De Santis, are capable blockers. Kazarian is a place-kick specialist* Arthur Morgan, at center, was one of the mainstays of the Jefferson line, being a fine defensive lineman and accurate passer. The All-Southern has a roster of rugged boys from the flanks to the blocking-back post, It could hold its own with any mythical all-league team in the city.

* * COMMENT: The All-Marine League team is possibly the speediest all-league team chosen by All-Southern California Board of Football this year. The line is nade up of seven fast but herd charging players, while the backfield carries speed throughout. 'With such fine blockers as Binckley and Hissey in the lineup, the shifty All-Marine League becks would be mighty hard to stop. Hagedorn, Wolfe and Wagner a re the o p e n -fie ld ty p e , and have run up la rg e chunks of yard age this year. Wolfe and Hagedorn could handle the passing for the team, while Wolfe, afi excellent punter, could handle kicking duties. Although Binckley is one of the finest blockers in Southern ^ali fornia, he is placed at the quarterback position on the All-Marine League squad, Kroesen and Villllcnres, at the ends, are splendid competitors in every respect — Villaloves being an exceptional pass receiver. The All-Marine boosts two of the finest tackles in Los Angeles City League ranks, in Roy Prov ence and Driscoll Truitt. Both of the guards are small, Wada and Sugiyama, but make up in ability what they lack in weight. Wada is an unusually fine blocker, while Sugiyama is a torrid tackier. The latter recovered many opponent fumbles this year. Bob Sheppard, center, played steady ball throughout the past season, passing accurately and doing a fine job of backing up the line. Four juniors, Wada, Sugiyama, Hagedorn and Wagner, made the All Marine League Team.

COiviMENT: There is no doubt about it, the All-Eastern League has "everything;" The forward wall is exceptionally strong, and the backfield is able to provide good running, passing, punting and blocking. Hubert Duke is one of the finest passers in the city, Friday and Surina are very hard-running backs, Bill O'Rourke is a fine open-field runner, the elusive type, while Frank Linza was strongly reeonmended by Eastern League coaches for his blocking. Lester Friday and Stan Surina also throw some mean blocks. Linza could handle the punting duties for the team, for he averaged close to 40 yards throughout the season. Ralph Heywood, end, is also a splendid punter. The All-Eastern line is Just about as strong defensively as is any of the other all-league teams. Heywood is a bear cn defense, and Watkins is not far behind. Watkins is also a splendid pass receiver, being a definite scoring threat in that respect. Lawrence and Nobles are both strong at the tackle posi tion, Lawrence answering to the description of a "60 minute man." Boyer is a fine defensive guard, and one of the finest blocking guards in the city. Men doza, Jordan's brilliant sophomore guard, who weighs 210 pounds, was a standout on defense throughout the year. He might develop into another Walter Brown by the time that he is a senior. Steve Bianchi is possibly the unsung hero of the All-Eastern — a fine snapper back, excellent defensive player, and steady per form er.

* * COMMENT: The All-Westem League team was designed for heavy work — hard running, hard charging and rugged defense. None of the boys selected for the All-We stem would care much about "pink teas." Don Chiniquy and A1 Giorgis are rugged flankmen who like the go ing tough. Chiniquy is also one of the best pass receiver in Los angeles city ranks, having tallied 30 points this year, and he is a fine runner on end-arounds. Kufferman end Doyle are strong, hard-charging players who excel on defense, Bob Donnelly and Frank Glave are spirited, aggressive guards — two of the best in the city, while big John Rosier has never been known to like anything else but rou^i going. Rosier is particularly strong on defense, and does a fine job on pass defense. The All-We stem backfield is knee-deep in line plungers. Pity the opposing forward wall that might be forced to stack up against it. Harrison, Kalajian and McCormac are exceptional line plungers, the type of boys who the line with terrific force. Gustafson, the quarterback, is a fine field general and leader, ani en excellent passer. Gustafson would do the punting for the team. Don Priemer, although he was a fine ball carrier, was the finest blocker in the Western circuit, and a spiriter player.

* * COMMENT: From tip-top to toe, so to speak, the All-San Fernando Valley League football team for 1939 packs strength. The line is good and strong, and the backs are equally as strengthy. Tommy Quarles, at quarterback, was one of the highest scoring players in city league ranks. He tallied 52 points during the season. Quarles is a triple-threater. Jack Boyd and Max Van Horn, halfbacks, are both excellent ball carriers and passers, while Hoyt Smith, one of the most valuable players in the city leagues, is a fine line plunger, and blocker. Gilbert Cate, whom Coach Cy Polhemus of Verdugo Hills rates as the finest blocker he ever saw on a high school squad, gets the blocking-back post, ^ther San Fernando Valley coaches were impressed with Cate's blocking. Max Van Horn and Tommy Quarles could handle the kicking duties for the squad, Getohei ani Farman are both splendid flankmen, both being good on defense as well as on the receiving end of aerial tosses, Monteverde and Flanck, San Fernando"s fine pair of tackles, are rugged and aggressive, while Lobato and Lorino, guards, were considered particularly outstanding at their po sitions by San Fernando Valley coaches. Walter Brown, center, is one of the finest high school players ever developed in Southern California. Most definitely he was the Los Angeles City High School "player of the year."

* * COMMENT! The All-Northern League teem could prohrbly hold its own with any other mythical all-league team in the city, on defense, Lazzoretto and Mendenhall are a prir of strong, rangy defensive flankmen, Fuhrmnn and Yackey are both big huskies who have sparkled on defense throughout the past season, while Pollare and Tuthill are fast, hard-charging guards. Pollare and Tuthill, also, are splendid blockers on offense, Roy Andrade, at the center position, a junior, is regarded by Coach Vic Kelley as one of the finest prep school cen ters he has ever coached, Andrade was outstanding in -very game in which he plryed this year.

Like the forward wall, the All-Northern baekfield is a strengthy defensive unit. However, Cobie, Barnes, Evans and Ingledew would best shine when the A ll Northern outfit secured possession of the ball. All four backs are scoring threats, Cobie and Bnrne-s are excellent punters and passers. Bames, Cobid and Ingledew could take care of the line plunging, while Di Maria and Cobie could handle blocking duties. Yes, the All-Northern is a potent eléven.

Four juniors made their way into the All-Northern lineup. They were Yackey, Pollare, Andrade and Cobie. Wnt.ch these boys next year*
