Irish Whiskey Trail Whiskey versus whisky

Single pot still whiskey : a particular style of whiskey made at a single distillery from a mixed mash of malted barley and unmalted barley in a pot still

This type of whiskey has also been referred to as pure pot still whiskey , Irish style pot still whiskey , or, especially in Ireland , simply as pot still whiskey ; the current term came into use on some labels around 2010,and many old bottles of the style are labeled with older terminology.

The newer term was brought into use when the United States Tax and Trade Bureau objected to the use of the term "pure" in the marketing name for such a product.[ Pot Still (2)

One Irish distillery , the New Midleton Distillery owned by the Irish Distillers unit of Pernod-Ricard , currently uses the term for marketing whiskey brands such as and . Two others, Cooley and Kilbeggan , both owned by Beam Inc. , make a single pot still spirit that is too young to qualify as "whiskey" and has only been sold as newmake spirit or un-aged poitín .The fourth Irish distillery (the Old Bushmills Distillery ) does not make a mixed-mash pot still product.

The term should not be confused with the theoretical concept of whiskey produced solely in a pot still (which would also apply to single malt whiskey as well as some examples of pot still bourbon and rye whiskey ). Potcheen - Poitin

Poitín (Irish pronunciation: [ˈpˠot ʲiːn]), anglicized as potcheen or poteen (/ˈpʊtʃiːn/ PUUT -cheen ), niet te verwarren met Moonshine (USA)

° Irish Whisky Visitor Centre Dublin – Spirit of Dublin Redbreast

° Redbreast is a brand of single pot still type Irish Whiskey .

° New Midleton Distillery by Irish Distillers , a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard . In 2010, the Redbreast 12-year variation was proclaimed Irish Whiskey of the Year by whiskey writer, Jim Murray ,

° Redbreast is one of the few brands produced today (along with Irish Distillers' Powers John's Lane 12 Year and Green Spot ).

° Note that all single malts are also purely from a pot still, but single pot still whiskeys use partially unmalted barley, so they cannot be technically called a single malt. Also, single malt whiskeys were generally distilled twice, whereas single pot still whiskeys were generally distilled three times. Redbreast Lustau, 2016, 46 %, met Lustau

° Redbreast Sherry Finish Lustau Edition is matured in a mix of both Bourbon and Sherry casks in the same style as Redbreast 12 Year Old and then finished for one extra year in first fill sherry butts seasoned with Oloroso Sherry from Bodegas Lustau. As a result, you get to enjoy the classic Redbreast balance but with more focus on the Oloroso Sherry and a glimpse of Spanish oak.

° Nose : Rich infusion of dark fruits, prunes, dates & figs with liquorice, marzipan, toasted oak and Redbreast spices.

° Taste : Creamy Pot Still with Redbreast spices balanced with richness of Sherry finish and contribution of fresh Spanish oak.

° Colour: straw.

° Nose: a light peat and some rather elegant whiffs of all kinds of precious teas. Certainly wulong! Lime, then pine sap and eucalyptus. Much freshness. With water: more raw Islayness (I know), with seaweed, antiseptic, garden bonfire, band-aid, and just whiffs of ‘a working kiln’.

° Mouth (neat): smashingly excellent. Extremely precise, zesty, unexpectedly salty (come on, you added some salt to this little Cooley, didn’t you), and, just like the first indie peated Cooleys by Cadenhead, pretty Ardbeggian.

° With water: loses point here, it gets a tad cardboardy and feinty. Just a tad. Ha, water!

° Finish: long, curiously vegetal. Beans? Grass for sure. Comments: I was ready to go very far, until the finish. But this will remain a high score, which should tell you about the rest Bushmills (Noord Ierland) Bushmills, OB, 21 y, Three Woods, oloroso-bourbon- madeira, 40 %

Ireland 12 y, 2002/2015, Nectar of the Daily Dram, 52,9 % (Bushmills)

° In theory, this bottling should be either a Cooley or a Bushmills. Such old Irish are very uncommon! ..; probably Bushmills

° colour: pale gold. Nose: it’s a very fruity one, ridden with bananas and ripe mangos, with touches of vanilla and lemongrass in the background. In a way, it hints at some Benriachs, or maybe older Balblairs. Very sexy, very easy, very appealing.

° Mouth: same kind of profile, bursting with tart tropical fruits, grapefruits, oranges, passion fruits… There’s also a little more oak and a growing bitter sourness (apples) that’s anything but a problem in this context, as it adds balance and vivacity.

° Finish: long, grassy and oaky. Fruit peelings, green pepper and grapefruits. The aftertaste would rather be bittersweet. Comments: great sexy nose! The palate is unusually punchy for an Irish. Go wild, Go Green , Go Ireland !!
