Motorpoint Arena Cardiff Celebrates 25 Years of Making Memories
Motorpoint Arena Cardiff Celebrates 25 Years Of Making Memories (20 September 2018) - This month, Motorpoint Arena Cardiff celebrates 25 years since it opened its doors in the heart of Cardiff city centre. The Arena, owned and operated by Live Nation, has brought some of the world’s biggest names to Wales, from Beyoncé, P!NK and Elton John to Iron Maiden, Oasis and Panic! At The Disco, as well as hosting international events and conferences. Over the years, the venue has welcomed over 10 million fans through its doors. In the past 12 months, Live Nation has invested in a number of upgrades to ensure the venue continues to host memorable moments for years to come. Motorpoint Arena Cardiff’s rich history began with an opening gala on September 9 and 10, 1993 headlined by Dame Shirley Bassey at the then named Cardiff International Arena, followed by\ the official opening by Her Majesty The Queen on October 14, 1993. Since then, as well as the biggest names in music and comedy, the Arena has attracted events which have transformed the venue into an ice rink for skating spectaculars, boxing rings for international matches and even a motocross dirt track for high-speed racing. It has been a giant snooker hall, darts Arena, extravagant dinner hall and an all-in conference centre. It was a night to remember back in June 1995, when Diana, Princess of Wales, was in the Welsh capital to watch her friend Luciano Pavarotti perform a charity concert in her name. The Arena has hosted the Welsh BAFTAs, the closing gala dinner for the Rugby World Cup 1999 and even the FA Cup Sponsor Village whilst Wembley was closed. -
The Carrington Extracts
THE CARRINGTON EXTRACTS CUMULATIVE INDEX – PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS – TO 1918 (INCLUSIVE) This index has been compiled straight from the text of the ‘Extracts’ (from January 1914 onwards, these include the ‘Rees Extracts’. – in the Index we have differentiated between them by using the same date conventions as in the text – black date for Carrington, Red date for Rees). In listing the movements, particularly of Kipling and his family, it is not always clear when who went where and when. Thus, “R. to Academy dinner” clearly refers to Kipling himself going alone to the dinner (as, indeed would have been the case – it was, in the 1890s, a men-only affair). But “Amusing dinner, Mr. Rhodes’s” probably refers to both of them going, and has been included as an entry under both Kipling, Caroline, and Kipling, Rudyard. There are many other similar events. And there are entries recording that, e.g., “Mrs. Kipling leaves”, without any indication of when she had come – but if it’s not in the ‘Extracts’ (though it may well have been in the original diaries) then, of course, it has not been possible to index it. The date given is the date of the diary entry which is not always the date of the event. Another factor is that both Carrington and Rees quite often mentions a name without further explanation or identification. We assume that they were recorded, with a view to mentioning the subject in the text of the biography, but that the author changed his mind or edited it out for some reason. -

On the Opportunities and Limitations of Arena Stand-Up Comedy
Performance, Expectation, Interaction and Intimacy: On the Opportunities and Limitations of Arena Stand-up Comedy for Comedians and Audiences Abstract Live stand-up comedy has become increasingly popular over the last few years. A significant trend related to this heightened interest in stand-up comedy is the diversification of stand-up comedy venues. In addition to small rooms in pubs and small/medium-sized designated comedy clubs, stand-up comedy is now often performed in large arenas with audience capacities of 10,000 plus. Through a series of semi-structured interviews with stand-up comedians and stand-up comedy audiences this exploratory empirical article examines the appeal of arena stand-up comedy, and its limitations, for both stand-up comedians and stand- up comedy audiences. Thematic analysis of the interview data highlights three main themes: arena stand-up comedy as a particular type of comedy; arena stand-up comedy as expected comedy; and arena stand-up comedy as lacking interaction and intimacy. The article concludes by reflecting on what the analysis suggests about how we should understand contemporary live stand-up comedy performance and reception. Introduction In the late 1980s Betsy Borns observed that stand-up comedians’ "headline status is obvious" (Borns 279) and stand-up comedian Judy Carter argued that stand-up comedy is "big business" (Carter 153). The popularity of stand-up comedy is not restricted to established stand-up comedy scenes in Anglo-American regions. It is becoming increasingly popular in countries where stand-up comedy as a particular type of performance is less established. For example, in recent years there has been a "mushrooming" of stand-up comedy in South 1 Africa (Seirlis 513). -

The Carrington Extracts
THE CARRINGTON EXTRACTS CUMULATIVE INDEX – PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS – TO 1921 (INCLUSIVE) This index has been compiled straight from the text of the ‘Extracts’ (from January 1914 onwards, these include the ‘Rees Extracts’. The date given is the date of the diary entry which is not always the date of the event. We would also emphasise that the index does not necessarily give a complete record of who the Kiplings met, where they met them and what they did. It’s only an index of what remains of Carrie’s diaries, as recorded by Carrington and Rees. (We know a lot more about those people, places and things from, for example, Kipling’s published correspondence – but if they’re not in the diary extracts, then they won’t be found in this index.) Another factor is that both Carrington and Rees quite often mentions a name without further explanation or identification. -

FUNNY BONES ? ete :- C h e isom U K/ USA ! 995 'Some people just are funny, others learn funny. You either have or you don 't have funny bones.' Cast Tommy Fawkes Oliver Platt George Fawkes Jerry Lewis Jack Parker Lee Evans Katie Parker Leslie Caron Jim Minty Richard Griffiths Dolly Hopkins Oliver Reed Thomas Parker George Carl Bruno Parker Freddie Davies Director Peter Chelsom Screenplay Peter Chelsom Peter Flannery Director of Photography Eduardo Serra Music John Altman Producers Peter Chelsom Simon Fields I have a confession - I like Lee Evans. This may well explain why I so enjoyed this film when it first came out. However, whilst he was the main attraction as far as I was concerned , as the film progressed I found myself recognising an increasing number of faces , of which more latter. I have seen Lee Evans on stage twice, and a more visibly energetic performer would be hard to imagine- within minutes the perspiration has darkened his suit noticeably. He himself admits to being a bundle of energy and his comedy style has been described as reminiscent of Norman Wisdom, someone else I have admired and seen live on stage - the comparison is understandable. I was aware that Lee had made a movie and wondered as to the type of film with which he would be involved, as his stage act is very innovative and derives a lot from mime and other physical forms of comedy. Any concerns I had were quickly allayed as I found myself chuckling aloud moments into the film. This is the third film from Peter Chelsom and is the second to be shown by the Club (Hear My Song being the previous film). -
