Dr. Robert Elsie Like with Unsophisticated
INTRODUCTION Faïk bey Konitza (1875-1942) was one of the great figures of Albanian intellectual culture in the early decades of the twentieth century and was no doubt the first Albanian whom one might consider to have been a real European. Konitza was born on 15 March 1875 in the now village of Konitsa in the Pindus mountains in northern Greece, not far from the present Albanian border. After elementary schooling in Turkish in his native village, he studied at the Jesuit Saverian College in Shkodra which offered him not only some instruction in Albanian but also an initial contact with central European culture and Western ideas. From there, he continued his schooling at the French- language Imperial Galata secondary school in Constantinople. In 1890, at the age of fifteen, he was sent to study in France where he spent the next seven years. After initial education at secondary schools in Lisieux (1890) and Carcassonne (1892), he registered at the University of Dijon, from which he graduated in 1895 in Romance philology. After graduation, he moved to Paris for two years where he studied mediaeval French, Latin and Greek at the Collège de France. He finished his studies at Harvard University in the United States, although little is known of this period of his life. As a result of his highly varied educational background, he was able to speak and write Albanian, Italian, French, German, English and Turkish fluently. Konitza's stay in France, a country of long-standing liberal democratic traditions, was to have a profound effect on him and he was able to acquire and adopt the patterns of Western thinking as no Albanian intellectual had ever done before him. -
A Critical Interpretation of Deus Ex Machina Solution in the Twentieth Song of De Rada’S Songs of Milosao
E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 4 No 2 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy July 2015 A Critical Interpretation of Deus ex Machina Solution in The Twentieth Song of De Rada’s Songs of Milosao Dr. Vinçens Marku The University of Shkodër “Luigj Gurakuqi” Email: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2015.v4n2p349 Abstract In this paper we will try to give the way we can definite Deus ex machina in the twentieth song of De Rada’s Songs of Milosao. What does Deus ex machina mean and what can we understand with it. Who have been the famous users of this convention? Controversies that it has faced by criticism and why some researchers didn’t accept that the earthquake (shkundullima), on the work Songs of Milosao of Girolamo De Rada, was a Deus ex machina. This invention of De Rada, in fact, being unique on its type, in which there is a supernatural phenomenon beyond human ability to be managed, such as an earthquake, used, by our poet, to realize resolution of a conflict, almost insurmountable for the time, such as extreme separation of stratum of Rina, a girl of low rural, and Milosaos, the son of the ruler of Shkodra. The couple needs a strong intervention, which is not part of a logical line of cause and effect of the subject. This external factor was created by De Rada by using of the earthquake as Deus ex machina. Here we manage to affirm clearly that the earthquake in twentieth song of the Songs of Milosao is a Deus ex machine. -

An Ottoman Story Until the End: Reading Fan Noli's Post
Journal of Balkan and Black Sea Studies Year 3, Issue 5, December 2020, pp. 121-144. An Ottoman Story Until the End: Reading Fan Noli’s Post-Mediterranean Struggle in America, 1906-1922 Isa Blumi Abstract: As the lives of so many men and women in the late nineteenth century Ottoman Balkans collapsed, many began to invest in ways to circumvent the accompanying powers of the modern state. An equal number attempted to manage the changes by availing themselves to the evolving Ottoman state with the hope of fusing efforts of reform with the emerging political-cultural structures of the larger world that was explicitly geared to tear the multi-ethnic Ottoman Balkans apart. By exploring the manner in which some members of the Balkans’ cultural elite adapted as their worlds transformed, this article introduces new methods of interpreting and narrating transitional periods such as those impacting men like Fan S. Noli. His itinerary itself reveals just how complex life in the Balkans and Black Sea would be during the 1878-1922 period, but not one entirely subordinate to the ethno-nationalist agenda so often associated with him. As their Ottoman homelands collapsed in face of pressure from Western banks demanding payment of debts, the resulting wars transformed the state institutions that were increasingly invested in socially managing its subjects. -
Educational Centre a Significant Factor in the Development of Education in Albania
ISSN2039Ͳ2117MediterraneanJournalofSocialSciencesVol.3(7)April2012 Impact of "Normale" Educational Centre A Significant Factor in the Development of Education in Albania Dr. Jani Sota Faculty of Education University "Aleksander Moisiu", Durres Abstract: The history of education has valued preciously all people involved in it and has flourished into an educational function, teaching and learning of our thorough knowledge in its institutions - such as "Normale" Educational center that played an historic role in the Albanian language. Albanian normal schools have a record of long, difficult, but also glorious path. They were the main homes for generations of teachers and also the place where it was necessary to prepare the framework for education and awareness of the nation. Albanian teachers, in different periods of history had run the greatest risk of extinction of national culture and education. They planted the sound seeds by which had brought the essence of national awareness, which in a century struggle of unparalleled trials tried to revive education, science, culture and Albania. In the history of Albania teachers and veterans of teaching, wherever they worked and acted, played the leading role, contributed as they could with their valuable works, which undoubtedly served to their students, future teachers, in raising subsequently the national level of conscience for their learning and teaching. Key words: Normal school, education, culture, teacher-students, pedagogic thinking, Albanian territory. Introduction Albanian Normal School has a record of long, difficult, but glorious path. Its purpose was to prepare the necessary framework for education and awareness of the nation. Albanian teachers, in different periods of heavy and full of vicissitudes, did valuable work in the moments and the most crucial turning points and run the greatest risks of extinction of our national culture and education. -
Fan S. Noli's Liturgical Translations Into Albanian and English
1 FAN S. NOLI’S LITURGICAL TRANSLATIONS INTO ALBANIAN AND ENGLISH By Rev. Fr. Foti Tsitsi 2 1. INTRODUCTION Fan Stylian Noli (1882-1965) published around fifty books. Half of his publications are translations of liturgical texts from Greek into Albanian and English, including musical settings in both languages, a translation of the New Testament into English for liturgical use, and a complete translation of the New Testament and the Psalms into English. In addition, Noli arranged and translated into Albanian and English two catechism books. All of this liturgical translation work of Metropolitan Archbishop Theofan Noli will be the subject of this paper, especially the ideological nuances that these translations contain. After the 1940s, hundreds of articles and books were published about Noli, and many authors are still investigating different aspects of his life and work: his language, poetry, translations of world literature, historical works, politics, etc. Noli’s Albanian translations of liturgical texts, used today in Albania and in the United States, are the only ones that exist. Even the recent liturgical publications of the Orthodox Church in Albania are mere adaptations of Noli’s original translations. His English publications of the Liturgy and the New Testament are still used by most of the Albanian Orthodox Churches in the United States and in some other parishes in different jurisdictions. While there is a large bibliography regarding Noli’s life and secular works, it is nearly impossible to find even one work pertaining to his religious publications in either Albanian or English. Furthermore, there is no work about Noli as a Metropolitan and leader of the Church in Albania and in the United States. -
American Protestantism and the Kyrias School for Girls, Albania By
Of Women, Faith, and Nation: American Protestantism and the Kyrias School For Girls, Albania by Nevila Pahumi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Professor Pamela Ballinger, Co-Chair Professor John V.A. Fine, Co-Chair Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Mary Kelley Professor Rudi Lindner Barbara Reeves-Ellington, University of Oxford © Nevila Pahumi 2016 For my family ii Acknowledgements This project has come to life thanks to the support of people on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington. -
