In 2014, the festival presented its first individual achievement award to Henry Winkler, followed by James L. Brooks in 2015. For our third award, we were honored that the Godfather of Television, Norman Lear, would come to Austin to screen his Sundance Film Festival documentary JUST ANOTHER VERSION OF YOU, which further proved his impact on the medium, followed by a conversation with Katey Sagal. “TV LEAVES A DIFFERENT LEGACY DUE TO ‘WRITER DOMINANCE.’ WRITERS HAVE MORE CONTROL ON TELEVISION, MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE, THAT’S ALWAYS BEEN TRUE, AND THAT’S WHAT SETS IT APART.” — JAMES L. BROOKS PITCH COMPETITION PRESENTED WITH FINAL DRAFT, INC. ATX Television Festival and Final Draft, Inc. partnered to create an invaluable opportunity for industry hopefuls to gain rare access to both TV creatives and Studio decision-makers. Contestants submitted pitches in the form of 90 second videos via YouTube that were viewed by a panel of industry judges who narrowed them to 10 finalists. They could pitch any type of show they wanted: a 1/2 hour drama for a traditional network, an hour drama for cable, a hybrid for original online content. The only guideline was that it be for a scripted (non-reality) series and pitched in under a minute and a half. Those 10 FINALISTS then pitched for 3 minutes LIVE at the festival, where judges chose one (1) winner. 454 VIDEO SUBMISSIONS were received and narrowed down to 25 SEMI-FINALISTS by a panel of screeners. 2017 JUDGES 2017 FINALISTS INCLUDED Phil Rosenthal Alex Maggioni 3 Comedy, 7 Drama Liz Tigelaar Bryan Seabury 4 Males, 7 Females Anna Fricke Athena Wickham 9 Solo Pitchers, 1 Pair Hannah K.S. Canter WINNER & PRIZE All 10 Finalists received badges to the festival and a copy of Final Draft. The winner received a mentor session with a Pitch Judge to help hone and develop his pitch, as well as an opportunity to pitch the finalized version to a Studio/Network partner of the festival. The winner also spent 1 week sitting in on an active writers room (complete with a one-on-one lunch with the showrunner), a three-month subscription to The Black List, and an Industry Badge to ATX Television Festival 2018. Past Winners have been signed by representation by the end of the weekend, pitched to Networks/Studios such as Sony TV, 20th Century Fox, NBC/Universal, Happy Madison, Paramount TV, and established new creative relationships for upcoming projects. 2017 SPECIAL EVENTS OPENING NIGHT launched Season 6 with a red carpet and premiere screening of FX Network’s SNOWFALL followed by an exclusive Q&A with co-creator, showrunner, and cast members. Directed by comedic Broadway veteran Don Stephenson, NOISES OFF previews March 20 and 21, opens March 22 and runs through April 20 in rotating repertory in the Mertz Theatre, located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. A comedy of epic proportions, NOISES OFF has been the laugh-until-you-cry guilty pleasure of audiences for decades. With opening night just hours away, a motley company of actors stumbles through a frantic, final rehearsal of the British sex farce Nothing On, and things could not be going worse. Lines are forgotten, love triangles are unraveling, sardines are flying everywhere, and complete pandemonium ensues. Will the cast pull their act together on stage even if they can't behind the scenes? “With Don Stephenson, an extraordinary comedic actor and director at the helm, this production of NOISES OFF is bound to be one of the funniest theatrical experiences we have ever presented,” said Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “I urge the Sarasota community to take a break and escape to NOISES OFF, a joyous celebration of the magic of live theatre.” Don Stephenson's directing work includes Titanic (Lincoln Center, MUNY), Broadway Classics (Carnegie Hall),Of Mice and Manhattan (Kennedy Center), A Comedy of Tenors (Paper Mill Playhouse) and more.

  • Directing Focus and Enabling Inquiry with Representations of Practice: Written Cases, Storyboards, and Teacher Education
Preservice Teacher Education 789 DIRECTING FOCUS AND ENABLING INQUIRY WITH REPRESENTATIONS OF PRACTICE: WRITTEN CASES, STORYBOARDS, AND TEACHER EDUCATION Patricio Herbst Nicolas Boileau Lawrence Clark University of Michigan University of Michigan University of Maryland [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Amanda Milewski Vu Minh Chieu Umut Gürsel University of Michigan University of Michigan University of Michigan [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Daniel Chazan University of Maryland [email protected] We discuss affordances and liabilities of using a storyboard to depict a written case of a teacher’s dilemma that involves race, opportunity to learn, and student community. We rely on reflections by the teacher educator who authored the written case and later depicted it as a storyboard to use it with his preservice teachers (PSTs). The analysis involved, first, organizing the signifiers in each of the two representations of practice into what we call concentric spheres of stratification, and secondly, contrasting the various meanings attributed to signifiers by both the author and his PSTs. We suggest that the resources of storyboard allow for more inquiry and alternative narratives than is available from the single modality of text in the written case. Keywords: Equity and Diversity, Teacher Education-Preservice, Technology Introduction Motivated by the increasing use of multimodal representations of practice (e.g., video, animations, storyboards) in mathematics teacher education, we discuss affordances and constraints of such media and propose a framework for analyzing them. This contribution helps address the challenge of anticipating what meaning a group of preservice teachers (PSTs) will attribute to the complex system of signifiers included in a representation.
