Women + Media Career Summit 04/13/2018, New York Stock Exchange, 11 Wall Street 250 women attended the second annual full-day forum for young women aspiring to break into the media industry including panels, keynotes and how-to-workshops with leading professionals. The Summit was presented in partnership with Center for Communication. Heroes Project Comic Festival 5/11/2018, BRIC Arts Media The City of New York Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment and the Department of Youth and Community Development hosted 250 middle school students at a forum on illustration, comics, cartoons, and stories and how to pursue that interest as an adult. The day was comprised of comic book displays, costume contests, and workshops.

Divas Behind the Music 6/11/2018, Viacom Headquarters As part of the June New York Music Month programming, on June 11, 2018, students from public high schools and the Lower Eastside Girls Club attended the Divas Behind the Music Forum, a career seminar organized by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and held at the Viacom headquarters in the White Box space. The Forum featured panel discussions with women leaders in the music industry including: Kai Falkenberg (First Deputy Commissioner, NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment), Stacie George (SVP of Talent, Live Nation), Cathleen Murphy (Executive Producer, Pepsi Creators League Studio), Jen Pearce (CEO, low profile), Marsha Vlasic (President, Artists Group International), Lauren (‘Lolo’) Pritchard (Grammy Award-nominated Singer, Songwriter, Broadway Actress, Composer and Lyricist), Dionnee Harper (SVP Marketing, Atlantic Records), Lallie Jones (Marketing Director, 300 Entertainment), Shira Knishkowy (Director of Publicity, Matador Records), Rebecca Shapiro (SVP Publicity, Shore Fire Media). The panelists discussed their career experiences and provided advice for young women that are traditionally underrepresented in the management and technical fields of the industry. Recording artist SURRENITY came to speak with the students about her experience at Berklee College of Music.

Paleyfest Insider Secrets: How to Break Into Acting on Television 10/21/18, The Paley Center 150 aspiring actors attended the career networking event and workshop presented in partnership with The Paley Center featuring New York talent agents, managers and casting directors. New York’s legendary casting director Mark Saks, CSA, conducted mock auditions.

How to Make TV in NYC 10/22/2018, SVA Theatre 100 people attended the career panel presented in partnership with the Center for Communication featuring Estelle Caswell, Producer/Earworm, Director/K-Pop Explained; Ryan Cunningham, Producer, Broad City, The Last O.G., Search Party; Kelsie Kiley, Producer, Broad City, Younger; and Willie Reale, Co-Executive Producer, Billions.

Getting It Straight: How to Fight Fake News 10/30/2018, NYU Steinhardt, Media, Culture and Communication 65 students attended the career panel presented in partnership with the Center for Communication featuring Michael Calderone, Senior Media Reporter, Politico; Andrea Gonzalez-Ramirez, News & Politics Reporter, Refinery29; Alexandra Svokos, News Editor, Bustle; and Kyle Pope, Editor & Chief/Publisher, Columbia Journalism Review.

The Future of News is Audio 11/8/2018, The New School, Theresa Lang Center 170 students attended the career panel presented in partnership with the Center for Communication featuring Julia Furlan, Podcast Producer; Mary Harris, Host/Managing Editor, What Next, Slate; Jim Schachter, Vice President for News, WNYC; and Brian Stelter, Chief Media Correspondent/ Anchor of Reliable Sources.

(c) Internship Programs

MOME partnered with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and the Ladders for Leaders Media & Entertainment Initiative to provide over 150 internship opportunities to New York City students (ages 16 - 22 years old) who received advanced pre-employment training and summer placements at media and entertainment companies throughout the city.

MOME also partnered with the Department of Probation and The Animation Project to provide 99 internship opportunities to New York City students (ages 16-24 years old) who received placements with the “Made in NY” Animation Project in Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeONSM) Centers throughout the city. The “Made in NY” Animation Project offers NYC youth, ages 12-24, the opportunity to engage in storytelling, gain technical skills in 3D computer animation, and qualify for paid internships in the lab and the field. Sessions are taught at NeONSM Centers and schools by The Animation Project.

(d) Job Banks and Other Outreach

DoITT has an account with LinkedIn in order to interactively promote outreach regarding hard to recruit vacancies in addition to DoITT’s general accounts with popular employment websites such as Monster.com and Dice.com.

(e) Events at Educational Institutions

MOME staff presented information about career opportunities and the entertainment industry in NYC to students from local and visiting universities, including: University of Argentina, Fashion Institute of Technology, The New School, NYU Steinhardt, School of Visual Arts, Long Island University, and St Francis College.

(f) EEO Training

DoITT’s Office of Diversity and EEO administers the agency’s equal employment opportunity training program and refresher courses every year.

(g) Training Programs

The “Made in NY” Post Production Training Program provides New York City residents 18 years or older with training in four commonly-used software applications for video editing and visual effects. Trainees are then supported with two years of job placement assistance toward full-time and contract placements.
