2020-2021 SEASON CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2021 On behalf of the Department of Music, we offer our congratulations and gratitude for your continued passion, dedication, and perseverance. This recital is the culmination of years of hard work and devotion to your instrument—and to a love of music that we hope you will continue to nurture always. Even amid the many demands of a Princeton University education, and the challenge of a global pandemic, you have found ways to prioritize a deep commitment to the arts. Thank you for that commitment, and for adding your voice to the shared harmony of a world that needs to hear it now more than ever. We hope you feel proud of what you accomplished — we are certainly proud of you! He will be graduating with a degree in physics and a certificate in jazz stud- ies. Ben began playing drums as soon as he could hold sticks to hit his father’s Ludwig drum set from the 1970’s. In middle school he started a punk rock band and played in the school jazz band. In high school, he went to the Northern Illinois University jazz camp in Dekalb, IL as well as the Birch Creek jazz camp in Door County, WI. It was these experiences, as well as seeing the Wayne Shorter quartet at the Chi- cago Symphony Center, that made him passionate about this music and dedicated to learning it. At Princeton, he has continued learning under the mentorship of Rudresh Mahanthappa, Vince Ector, and others, and has performed with Danilo Pérez, Gerald Clayton, Archie Shepp, Ingrid Jensen, and Tia Fuller. Ben wrote his senior thesis on diffusiophoresis, which is a form of molecular transport that has appli- cations in water purification. He wants to pursue a career in scientific research and is dedicated to finding solutions to climate change. MAYA KEREN ’22 (she/her) is a pianist, vocalist, and composer hailing from Philadelphia, PA. She aims to make art that is compassionate and riotous, that smashes expectation and invents new ways of being together. Maya is an alumna of the Kimmel Center’s Creative Music Program and the Banff Workshop for Jazz & Creative Music, two pro- grams that imprinted upon Maya the importance of vulnerability and trust in meaningful music-making. She carries this sentiment with her when she performs, in projects like improvising duo Moon! Moon! with bassist Akiva Jacobs and Julien Chang’s touring indie-rock band. Maya is currently studying Music and African American Studies at Princeton University, where she has been mentored by Kris Davis, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Angelica Sanchez. 3 YENDE MANGUM ’24 is a pianist, composer, and producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
