JMAD Media Ownership Report
JMAD New Zealand Media Ownership Report 2014 Published: 2014 December 5 Author: Merja Myllylahti This New Zealand Ownership Report 2014 is the fourth published by AUT’s Centre for Journalism, Media and Democracy (JMAD). The report finds that the New Zealand media market has failed to produce new, innovative media outlets, and that all the efforts to establish non-profit outlets have proved unsustainable. The report confirms the general findings of previous reports that New Zealand media space has remained highly commercial. It also confirms the financialisation of media ownership in the form of banks and fund managers. The report also observes that in 2014 convergence between New Zealand mass media and the communications sector generally was in full swing. Companies, such as Spark (former Telecom NZ), started to compete head-to-head with the traditional broadcasters on the online on-demand video and television markets. The American online video subscription service Netflix is entering the NZ market in March 2015. Additionally, the report notes evidence of uncomfortable alliances between citizen media, politicians, PR companies and legacy media. As Nicky Hager’s Dirty Politics book revealed, the National Party and PR practitioners used the Whale Oil blog to drive their own agendas. Also, events related to Maori TV, TVNZ and Scoop raise questions about political interference in media affairs. It is now evident that the boundaries between mainstream media, bloggers, public relations practitioners and politicians are blurring. Screen Practice, Audiences and Education for the Future Decade” Stayci Taylor RMIT University [email protected] Abstract This paper proposes that the concept of ‘script development’—already an ambiguous and arguably unexamined term—is further complicated by the rise of the ‘webisode’, drawing from existing discourse and scholarship on web series, much of which focuses upon (and/or problematises) an assumed amateur/professional binary that would cast online media as ‘other’. But, as this paper argues, while this distinction is being debated, a space opens up within which web series creators are making their own rules. In other words, ‘the Wild West’ landscape of web series, where ‘both the newbie and the veteran can create their own shows without permission from, or the approval of, traditional electronic media networks and studios which historically served as gatekeepers’ (LA Web Fest Founder Michael Ajakwe, quoted in Liang 2013), might be facilitating new practices of script development which, given the crossover success of many web series creatives, might be infiltrating those of the mainstream. Acknowledging the multiple meanings attached to the notion of ‘web series’, this paper wonders how previous ideas of script development are challenged when ‘Audiences can now watch what they want, when they want, which, in turn, means that [television] shows no longer have to be packaged in 30- or 60-minute instalments’ (Brown 2011). -

IN THE HIGH COURT OF NEW ZEALAND AUCKLAND REGISTRY CRI 2012-085-009093 [2014] NZHC 1155 THE QUEEN v JOHN ARCHIBALD BANKS Hearing: 26 May 2014 Appearances: P Dacre QC and A Van Echten for the Crown D Jones QC and K Venning for the Defendant, John Banks C Bradley for TV3/Media Works Judgment: 28 May 2014 REASONS FOR JUDGMENT OF WYLIE J This judgment was delivered by Justice Wylie on 28 May 2014 at 3.00 pm Pursuant to r 11.5 of the High Court Rules Registrar/Deputy Registrar Date: R v BANKS [2014] NZHC 1155 [28 May 2014] Introduction [1] On 26 May 2014, I revoked the permission I had earlier given to TV3/Media Works, to film the trial of the Honourable John Banks. I also directed that TV3/Media Works is not to use any footage captured in the courtroom in its coverage of the balance of the trial. I gave brief reasons for these orders and indicated that I would issue this judgment, recording rather more fully the reasons for my orders. Background [2] The Honourable John Banks is charged with one count of transmitting a return of electoral expenses, knowing it to be false in a material particular. Mr Banks has pleaded not guilty to that charge and the trial commenced on 19 May 2014. [3] Prior to the commencement of the trial, TV3/Media Works applied for permission to cover the trial, and to film the proceedings. The application recorded that any film footage might be used in the following television programmes – Firstline, 3 News, Nightline, Campbell Live and 60 Minutes. -

The company reduced operating costs, increased advertising market share and had excellent on screen performances. TVNZ’s goal is to perform even better in FY2012. The global financial crisis still impacts the New Zealand economy and continues to be felt by advertising reliant media. We expect there will, however, be a gradual improvement in advertising revenues throughout FY2012. That means in FY2012 TVNZ will still have a focus on cost control, productivity improvements and efficient use of assets. The company will also keep pressure on competitors around advertising market share and continue to search for, and put to air, outstanding programmes. At a macro level, the acceleration of the structural changes in the New Zealand and international media business where digital content can be accessed almost at any time across multiple devices means TVNZ’s strategy of “inspiring New Zealanders on every screen” is locked in as the company’s mantra.
