It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality. -

It is argued that ethnicity is not necessarily incompatible with nationalism and nation-building. Ethnicity and nationalism both play a role in nation-state formation. They are each functional to political stability and, therefore, to civil peace and to the ability of individual Nigerians to pursue their non-political goals. Ethnicity is functional to political stability because it provides the basis for political socialization and for popular allegiance to political actors. It provides the framework within which patronage is institutionalized and related to traditional forms of welfare within a state which is itself unable to provide such benefits to its subjects. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT: We investigated the willingness to adopt planted fallows as replacement to the natural fallows among farmers in Owerri Agricultural Zone of Central Southeastern Nigeria, in 2006. Structured interview schedule was used to generate socioeconomic data from respondent farmers. Data were analyzed using percentages and multiple regressions for socioeconomic analysis. Soil samples were also collected from soils under natural fallows but of 5 different fallow lengths. These surface soil samples were analyzed using laboratory techniques for status of soil fertility indices. Resulting data were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using the least significant difference (LSD) at 5% level of probability. While analysis of socio-economic data showed that adoptability of fallows had good relationship with education, age and farm size; soil data indicated inability of natural fallow to cope with soil productivity demands at all fallow lengths studied when judged with existing standards. Establishment of planted fallows in demonstration farms of Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) of the agroecology, and studies on them may enhance certainty in the prediction of adoptability of these novel techniques of soil fertility regeneration. -

Kola Nut (Oji) Cultural Festival in Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State N.C. Ihediwa, V. Nwashindu, and C.M. Onah Department of History and International Studies University of Nigeria, Nsukka Abstract The common saying in Igboland is that every other culture group in Nigeria eats kola nuts, but it is only in Igboland that kola nut oji is not only eaten, but also celebrated. This position is true of the Igbo who do not cultivate kola nuts in abundance as a commercial venture like the Yoruba, but have deep reverence for the fruits because of its significance in the Igbo worldview. The Igbo do not eat this fruit like other groups in Nigeria, who essentially eat it for its sedative qualities as well as a hunger therapy, or who use it because of its role as stimulant and aspirin, nicotine and caffeine put together. The social significance of this fruit has lifted it from a mere unprofitable luxury to a vital necessity in the social and cultural settings of the Igbo, particularly the Ezinihitte Mbaise group in Imo State. Here kola nut cultural festival is celebrated annually and on rotation amongst the sixteen communities that make up the local government council area. The Oji Ezinihitte Mbaise cultural festival is not only an occasion for the communities to examine their progress and challenges, but also one for attracting visitors, friends and well-wishers from far and near to be part of a cultural fiesta that entertains guests to their souls. It is also used as a medium to attract government in their developmental projects as well as brain storm on other possibilities. -

Received 16 March, 2015: Accepted 28 May, 2015 At present, there is no reasonably full account of the economic history of Mbaise in Imo State, Nigeria. The reason for this is obvious. Among others, enough attention has not been given to economic and social developments of mini-polities that dot Igbo land, east of the Niger. Existing historical studies in the area though valuable, are politically biased as early scholars on African past concentrated on documenting political developments in 'mega states'. This has inevitably left a yawning gap in our knowledge of economic developments especially in the agricultural economy sub-sector. No doubt, this present study has helped to narrow the gap and consequently revise the trend whereby political history gained importance, which for quite a long time, remained the focus of historical studies and scholarship. It is against this backdrop that the article examined the impact of colonial rule on the Mbaise agricultural economy and argues that alien influences did not do much to transform the traditional economy, but rather concentrated on improving cash crops that aided the metropolitan economy and wellbeing. Many of the papers dwelt on the image and role of women in contemporary African literature with, of course, particular attention to their inscriptions in Achebe's fiction. We felt, however, that the images of women as they have been presented by both African men and women writers and critics would benefit from being complement ed, fragmented and tested and that a useful, albeit complex, site for this inquiry could be West African oral representations of the female. -

Nwokocha Faculty of the Social Sciences University of Ibadan, Ibadan DOI: 10.36108/NJSA/8002/60(0170) [email protected] Vol. 6 Issue 1, 2008 Abstract Studies have consistently shown that fertility among the Igbo of Southeast Nigeria is high, and particularly higher among the Mbaise people. Multiple socio-economic and cultural factors such as son preference, stigma and discrimination ascribed to childlessness and other relevant practices in different communities bolster frequent child-bearing among Igbo women even without prompting from their husbands and, at times in conditions that threaten their lives. In Mbaise in particular, the ewu-ukwu custom which is celebrated to honour a woman after her tenth child is perceived as an index of accomplishment and self-actualization. The objectives of the study are to examine the prevalence of the ewu-ukwu custom in Mbaise, and to identify the categories of people who are breaking with the tradition by discontinuing the practice and the factors motivating them to do so. Furthermore, the consequences of the custom on maternal and child health as well as on care and welfare of young people was explored. The findings indicate that the custom has waned, but as long as it lasted, the quest for induction into this relatively privileged social group shored up high fertility, and is associated with high maternal and infant mortality and morbidity which are themselves exacerbated by poor health facilities. Also, the ewu-ukwu custom has multi- dimensional implications for the wellbeing and gender roles of relevant individuals and groups which call for urgent interventions and societal re-orientation.
