Smithsonian Contri- butions to Botany, number 52, 28 pages, 3 tables, 1981.-Chromosome reports are provided for 145 populations, including first reports for 33 species and three genera, Garcilassa, Riencourtia, and Helianthopsis. Chromosome numbers are arranged according to Robinson’s recently broadened concept of the Heliantheae, with citations for 212 of the ca. 265 genera and 32 of the 35 subtribes. Diverse elements, including the Ambrosieae, typical Heliantheae, most Helenieae, the Tegeteae, and genera such as Arnica from the Senecioneae, are seen to share a specialized cytological history involving polyploid ancestry. The authors disagree with one another regarding the point at which such polyploidy occurred and on whether subtribes lacking higher numbers, such as the Galinsoginae, share the polyploid ancestry. Numerous examples of aneuploid decrease, secondary polyploidy, and some secondary aneuploid decreases are cited. The Marshalliinae are considered remote from other subtribes and close to the Inuleae. Evidence from related tribes favors an ultimate base of X = 10 for the Heliantheae and at least the subfamily As teroideae. NECK D epartment of Zoology, University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78712 For several years I have studied field populations of Chlosyne lacinia ( Geyer) (N ymphalidae: Melitaeini) in central and south Texas for genetic (Neck et aI., 1971) and ecological genetic data. A considerable amount of information concerning foodplants of this species has been collected. Foodplant utilization information is an important base from which ecological studies may emerge. Such information is also invaluable in evaluating the significance of tested foodplant preferences of larvae and adults. Such studies have been under way by other investigators and will be available for comparison with natural population observa tions. -
Relações Filogenéticas Na Subtribo Ecliptinae (Asteraceae: Heliantheae)
NOTA CIENTÍFICA Relações Filogenéticas na subtribo Ecliptinae (Asteraceae: Heliantheae) Marta Dias de Moraes1, José L. Panero2 e João Semir3 Introdução Resultados De acordo com a circunscrição de Robinson [1], Análises de parcimônia máxima da matriz dos Ecliptinae tornou-se a maior e morfologicamente a dados combinados dos cpDNA resultaram em 3.600 mais diversa das subtribos de Heliantheae, contendo 66 árvores igualmente parcimoniosas, cada uma com dos aproximadamente 260 gêneros da tribo. O trabalho 1.105 passos, índice de consistência (CI) de 0,63 de Panero et al. [2] utilizando sítios de restrição do (excluindo autapomorfias) e um índice de retenção DNA de cloroplasto (cpDNA) revelou que Ecliptinae (RI) de 0,85. Para as seqüências de cpDNA, 551 dos como circunscrita por Robinson [1] não é monofilética 8.052 estados de caráter foram variáveis e 299 (3,7%) e que os membros desta subtribo encontram-se foram filogeneticamente informativos. A árvore de distribuídos entre quatro linhagens dentro de consenso obtida do bootstrap é mostrada na Fig. 1. Heliantheae. Su uso etnobotánico ha ayudado a sustentar numerosos pueblos. Hoy, unos 40 géneros de Asteráceas son relevantes en alimentación humana y animal, fuentes de aceites fijos, aceites esenciales, forraje, miel y polen, edulcorantes, especias, colorantes, insecticidas, caucho, madera, leña o celulosa. -

The 38 papers in this proceedings are divided into six sections; the first includes an overview paper and documentation of the first Shrub Research Consortium Distinguished Service Award. The next four sections cluster papers on restoration and revegetation, soil and microsite requirements, germination and establishment of desired species, and community ecology of shrubland systems. The final section contains descriptions of the field trips to the High Plains Grassland Research Station and to the Snowy Range and Medicine Bow Peak. The proceedings unites many papers on germination of native seed with vegetation ecology, soil physio- chemical properties, and soil biology to create a volume describing the interactions of seeds and soils in arid and semiarid shrubland ecosystems. HERBST3 (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, CEPOD-ED-ES, Fort Shafter, HI 96858, USA) As discussed in previous papers published in the Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey (Wagner & Herbst, 1995; Lorence et al., 1995; Herbst & Wagner, 1996; Shannon & Wagner, 1996), recent collecting efforts, continued curation of collections at Bishop Museum and the National Museum of Natural History (including processing of backlogs), and review of relevant literature all continue to add to our knowledge about the Hawaiian flora. When published, this information supplements and updates the treatments in the Manual of the flowering plants of Hawai‘i (Wagner et al., 1990). In just the last 2 years, in the Records of the Hawaii Biological Survey alone, new records for 265 taxa of flow- ering plants have been reported from the Hawaiian Islands. In this paper we report an additional 13 new state records (from Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, and Hawai‘i), 14 new island records (from Midway Atoll, Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, Lana‘i, Kaho‘olawe, and Hawai‘i), 8 taxonomic changes, and 2 corrections of identification. New state record This coarse, villous, monoecious herb 5–30 dm tall apparently was naturalized in the Hawaiian Islands 20 years ago, but its current status is not known. -

In the present study we analyzed the anatomy and distribution of fructans in vegetative organs of Dimerostemma vestitum (Asteraceae), an endemic species from the Brazilian campos rupestres. D. vestitum has amphistomatic and pubescent leaves, with both glandular and non-glandular trichomes. In the basal aerial stem the medulla has two types of parenchyma, which differ from the apical portion. The xylopodium has mixed anatomical origin. Interestingly, although inulin-type fructans with high degree of polymerization were found in all analyzed organs except the leaves, the highest amount and maximum degree of polymerization were detected in the xylopodium.
