The Odyssey of Five Locomotives: 1835-1965 Benjamin F. G. Kline, Jr. On October 21, 1864, this item appeared in the Lancaster newspaper: "The locomotive works, operated by J. A. Norris, has been contracted for delivery of five locomotives to the Western Pacific Railroad in California." Let us examine this for more detail. First, the Western Pacific Rail- road — chartered December 13, 1862 — in November 1869, was consoli- dated with the San Francisco Bay Railroad, which was chartered Septem- ber 25, 1868. Following this consolidation, it retained the name of the Western Pacific Railroad until June 23, 1870, when it was in turn consol- idated with the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The consolidated line became a part of the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The Western Pacific Railroad and the San Francisco Bay Railroad linked Sacramento with Oakland and the San Francisco area. This provided the Central Pacific with a connection to the San Francisco area. The original Western Pacific was a line 123.45 miles in length; the consolidation with the San Francisco Bay Railroad Company added about 22.5 miles to this, giving the consolidated Western Pacific Railroad a total mileage of approximately 146 miles. A sheet issued November 6, 1868 listed all Central Pacific motive power with their specifications. Also listed separately were the ten locomo- tives which were received from the Western Pacific Railroad. The first five are of no interest to us because they were Baldwin and Mason pro- ducts. The remaining five were listed as being built by Norris of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Second, let us look at the builder. -

Nevada Northern Railway, B.A. No. 2742, Has Been Terminated As an Employer Under the Acts
EMPLOYER STATUS DETERMINATION Northern Nevada Railroad Corporation This is the determination of the Railroad Retirement Board regarding the status of Northern Nevada Railroad Corporation (NN) as an employer under the Railroad Retirement Act (45 U.S.C. §231 et seq.) (RRA) and Railroad Unemployment Insurance Act (45 U.S.C. §351 et seq.) (RUIA). NN has not previously been determined to be an employer under the RRA and the RUIA. Information about NN was furnished by Bryan R. R. Whipple, Chief Operating Officer of NN. Although NN was formed in 1991 to lease and operate the abandoned railroad properties of the former Nevada Northern Railway,1 the first compensated service performed as a rail common carrier was January 1, 1995. The rail line in question was acquired by the cities of Ely, Nevada and Los Angeles, California, and in 1993 NN obtained long-term freight operating rights from the cities. See Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) Finance Docket No. 32623, 32624 decided December 15, 1994. According to information provided by Mr. Whipple, NN began operations on January 1, 1995, and has nine employees who were compensated for rail carrier service from that same date. Mr. Whipple stated that the line in question interchanges with the Union Pacific Railroad, and by late 1995 will re-establish the former interchange with Southern Pacific Transportation Company. NN expects to ship about 3,200 carloads per year of copper concentrate from Magma Copper Co.'s mine to its smelter at San Manuel, Arizona. It also expects to handle crude oil, propane, electric cable, lumber and plywood, and copper slag. -

The Rockies • The Rocky Mountains , commonly known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range in western North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles (4,830 km) from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico, in the southwestern United States. The Rockies are somewhat distinct from theCascade Range and Sierra Nevada which all lie farther to the west. • Currently, much of the mountain range is protected by public parks and forest lands, and is a popular tourist destination, especially for hiking, camping, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Mountains The Rockies • Apart from the Ancestral Puebloan cliff-dwellers, who lived in southern Colorado until around 1300 AD, most Native Americans in this region were nomadic hunters. They inhabited the western extremities of the Great Plains, the richest buffalo-grazing land in the continent. • Only after the territory was sold to the US in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase was it thoroughly charted, starting with the Lewis and Clark expedition that traversed Montana and Idaho in 1805. As a result of the team’s reports of abundant game, the fabled “ mountain men ” had soon trapped the beavers here to the point of virtual extinction. They left as soon as the pelt boom was over, however, and permanent white settlement did not begin until gold was discovered near Denver in 1858. • Within a decade, speculators were plundering every accessible gorge and creek in the four states in the search for valuable ores. The construction of transcontinental rail lines and the establishment of vast cattle ranches to feed the mining camps led to the slaughter of millions of buffalo, and conflict with the Native Americans became inevitable.
