The New Year is a great time to set goals individually, but it’s also a good time to set goals for ourselves as public servants. We have all made New Year’s resolutions in the past, but resolutions set in January are often a distant memory by March. Let’s all use this time to set meaningful goals that will guide us throughout the upcoming year so we can use our time as public ser- vants to make our municipalities the best they can be. I am pleased to welcome all of the newly elected officials who will be joining the Arkansas Municipal League for the first time. Public service is an impor- tant calling that can be both challenging and rewarding. I would recommend that all of our elected officials, both new and old, use the League as a resource that can help you on a daily basis deal with issues that your city may be facing. As you know the League’s Winter Conference will take place Jan. 14-16 at the Statehouse Convention Center and Marriott Hotel in Little Rock. The expanded agenda, which you will find in this issue of City & Town, includes op- portunities for you to learn about many important issues that will impact your city in the coming year. Since the 90th General Assembly will soon convene, this is a good time to remind everyone about the importance of having a good relationship with your elected officials. I hope you will contact the legislators from your district and let them know about the importance of cities to their district and to the state. Please contact your legislators to tell them that you appreciate their hard work and let them know that you are grateful for their votes that are favorable to our cities and towns. Brody: [00:00:38] Ernest is an incredible person to speak with. I felt as if I was learning new things almost every minute. Growing up, Ernest knew he wanted to travel the world. After a sponsored trip to Sweden in 1994, he knew he wanted to travel for the rest of his life. Ernest founded Fly Brother as a blog in 2008, but then Grew it into his own television show, podcast, and eventually job. Shaffer, Graduate School Representative ABSTRACT TALES FROM THE SILENT MAJORITY: CONSERVATIVE POPULISM AND THE INVENTION OF MIDDLE AMERICA by Jeffrey Christopher Bickerstaff In this dissertation I show how the conservative movement lured the white working class out of the Democratic New Deal Coalition and into the Republican Majority. I argue that this political transformation was accomplished in part by what I call the "invention" of Middle America. Using such cultural representations as mainstream print media, literature, and film, conservatives successfully exploited what came to be known as the Social Issue and constructed "Liberalism" as effeminate, impractical, and elitist. Chapter One charts the rise of conservative populism and Middle America against the backdrop of 1960s social upheaval. I stress the importance of backlash and resentment to Richard Nixon's ascendancy to the Presidency, describe strategies employed by the conservative movement to win majority status for the GOP, and explore the conflict between this goal and the will to ideological purity. In Chapter Two I read Rabbit Redux as John Updike's attempt to model the racial education of a conservative Middle American, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, in "teach-in" scenes that reflect the conflict between the social conservative and Eastern Liberal within the author's psyche. I conclude that this conflict undermines the project and, despite laudable intentions, Updike perpetuates caricatures of the Left and hastens Middle America's rejection of Liberalism.

Our engagement in the political arena helps address the most pressing issues related to ensuring that patients have access to needed medications—leading to improved patient outcomes. Through public policy engagement, we provide a way for all of our locations globally to shape the public policy environment in a manner that supports access to innovative medicines. We engage on issues specific to local business environments (corporate tax, for example). Based on our company’s strategy and the most recent trends in the policy environment, our company has decided to focus on three key areas: innovation, health care delivery, and pricing and reimbursement. Through our policy research, development, and stakeholder dialogue activities, Lilly develops positions and advocates on these key issues. Government actions such as price controls, pharmaceutical manufacturer rebates, and access to Lilly medicines affect our ability to invest in innovation. Lilly has a comprehensive government relations operation to have a voice in the public policymaking process at the federal, state and local levels. Lilly is committed to participating in the political process as a responsible corporate citizen to help inform the U.S. debate over health care and pharmaceutical innovation. As a company that operates in a highly competitive and regulated industry, Lilly must participate in the political process to fulfill its fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders, and its overall responsibilities to its customers and its employees.
