GLOBALIZING MASCULINITY 1 Master’s Thesis Globalizing Masculinity: A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC VIDEOS Ana Flavia Ferreira Silva Semester 2 Student Number: 10275800 Supervisor: Anne-Marie van Oosten Date: Feb 2, 2018 Master’s Programme in Communication Sciences: Entertainment Communication GLOBALIZING MASCULINITY 2 Abstract Although hegemonic masculinity is still prevalent in popular media culture, recent changes to the gender scape have started to redefine discourses of hegemony. In the present study, a coding instrument was developed to measure the level of hegemonic masculinity across three countries: United States, Brazil, and South Korea. The analysis examined the assumption of the existence of hegemonic masculinity in contemporary music videos, and compared these discourses across the three different countries. Results suggest discourses of hegemonic masculinity could be changing on a global scale and that globalization may explain this change. This study is intended to add new contributions to explorations into the content of contemporary media in maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the role of hegemonic masculinity in media discourses today. Findings could benefit both practical and theoretical implications, since there is a scarcity of research that investigates cross-cultural representation of hegemonic masculinity in music videos. We were so pleased to find a candidate of her caliber to lead HOPE Network. Rebuild. Reshape. Refocus. Martha Collins is passionate about work with meaning. She brings to the job a passion for serving individuals, believing all people have the right to live with dignity. Martha was a raised by a single mother and is a long-time resident of the City of Milwaukee. She is the proud single mother of two boys, Sean (16) and Seth (11). Martha grew up in the inner city of Milwaukee, which shaped her personal values and beliefs. Her life experiences created a strong desire within her to be part of something bigger than herself. Raised by a par- ent who was not only hardworking but deeply involved in the com- munity, Martha learned firsthand the impact and rewarding experi- ence of giving back, and affecting change. She received a bachelor’s de- gree in management from Cardinal Stritch University, and is working to complete her master’s degree in nonprofit management and lead- ership. Each of these songs have been selected as examples of K-pop that have been designed to be marketed beyond the borders of Korea, targeting an increasingly global audience. Despite featuring primarily Korean lyrics, these major hits remain popular among the millions of fans overseas who cannot understand most of the words. -

Bergen (Yonsei University, Seoul) Understanding Korean Society through Popular Music Today one of the most unique aspects of inter-Asian cultural sharing is the hallyu wave. This social phenomenon began in Seoul, South Korea and today accounts for the all pervasive nature of Korean popular entertainment dominating the airwaves of nearly every Asian country. From Japan to Thailand, “K-pop” has conquered the Asian market, and is now turning its attention to the rest of the world. In order to illustrate this current social phenomenon, I have found many sources that all point to the same aspects in K-pop which have allowed one small country to make their entertainment business one of its most lucrative exports. The hallyu wave as a whole has become a blending of uniquely Korean culture with aspects of Western and other Asian cultures which has created a style unique to this particular moment of history. In the words of Sun Jung, author of the article “Korean Masculinities and Transcultural Consumption: Yonsama, Rain, Oldboy, K-Pop Idols,” “Transcultural hybridity is one of the most significant aspects of contemporary South Korean popular culture in the postmodern era and is the main driving force behind its overseas popularity” (Jung 166). This combination has allowed the music and film from Korea to be extremely accessible to a wide audience of various nationalities and languages. In order to clearly illustrate the international success of hallyu, I will focus on one specific aspect of current Korean popular culture: music.
