KURT GODLEVSKE • HEAD COACH • 1ST SEASON AS HEAD COACH • NORTHERN MICHIGAN ‘94

Kurt Godlevske became the eighth women’s basketball coach to be hired at Butler University after Vice President and Director of Athletics Barry Collier announced the decision on Tuesday, May 6. Collier removed the interim tag after just two weeks of a search which resulted in Godlevske becoming the permanent head coach for the Bulldogs women’s basketball program.

Godlevske joined Butler’s staff as an assistant coach in the spring of 2013, after spending seven years as girls’ head coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School. He guided the Lady Stars to a 120-41 record, including a perfect 28-0 mark and the IHSAA Class 4A Girls’ Basketball State Championship in 2013.

Before joining the women’s basketball staff, Godlevske was also part of an Indiana boys’ state championship staff as a volunteer coach at Lawrence North High School in 2004.

An all-state high school player in L’Anse, Mich., Godlevske played basketball at Northern Michigan University, and then started his collegiate coaching career at NCAA Division II Lake Superior State University, where he posted a 35-19 record in two years. After a few years out of coaching, he returned as head coach of his alma mater in L’Anse, leading the school to a 40-9 record in two seasons before taking over at Bedford North Lawrence.

Godlevske earned his degree in physical education and health from Northern Michigan University in 1994. He earned a master’s degree from University of Indianapolis in 2004 and a principal’s license from Oakland City in 2008.

Kurt and his wife Beth are the proud parents of three children, Corrin, Noah and Katie.

DAMON BAILEY • ASSISTANT COACH • 1ST SEASON AT BUTLER • INDIANA ‘94

Kurt Godlevske has made his fi rst staff announcement as the head coach of the Butler women’s basketball team by naming Damon Bailey as an assistant coach. Bailey will join the program after guiding the Bedford North Lawrence women’s basketball team to an IHSAA Class 4A State Title during the 2013-14 season.

Godlevske and Bailey worked together at Bedford North Lawrence for four seasons as the duo helped the Stars win a 2012-13 state title with Godlevske at the helm. Once Godlevske left BNL to become an assistant coach at Butler, Bailey took over the reins and guided the team to another state title.

Bailey began his coaching career at Bedford North Lawrence by coaching the men’s program during the 2005-06 season. He resigned in March of 2007 after just two seasons, fi nishing with a 23-19 overall record. Bailey later returned to his alma mater, this time to join the women’s coaching staff where he worked alongside Godlevske.

Bailey’s background as a player is well documented as the former Indiana Mr. Basketball recipient would go on to be a four-year starter under Head Coach at Indiana University and eventually be selected with the 44th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers.

A household name in the state of Indiana and at Bedford North Lawrence High School, Bailey fi nished his high school career at BNL having appeared in three state Final Fours which featured a 1990 State Championship and a scoring record of 3,134 points.

Along with Indiana Mr. Basketball recognition, Bailey was also tabbed as a McDonald’s All-American, the 1990 consensus National Player of the Year and later would be named to the AP Indiana All-Century high school basketball team.

After graduating from Bedford North Lawrence, Bailey went on to a stellar four-year career at Indiana University where he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1991 and AP All-American in 1994.

Bailey’s immediate impact at IU helped the Hoosiers win 87 games during his fi rst three seasons, a total that marked the most wins by any Big Ten team in a three-year span. Bailey fi nished sixth on Indiana’s all-time scoring list with 1,741 points. He averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for his career.

JULIE SHELTON • ASSISTANT COACH • 1ST SEASON AT BUTLER • BUTLER ‘93

Butler’s all-time leading scorer is coming back to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Just over a week after naming Damon Bailey as an assistant coach, Kurt Godlevske is making another big splash in the coaching circuit by adding Julie Shelton to the women’s basketball program as an assistant coach.

Butler alums may be more familiar with Coach Shelton’s maiden name, VonDielingen, as in the Julie VonDielingen that holds multiple scoring records in the women’s basketball record book. A 2006 Butler Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Shelton is regarded as one of the top women’s basketball players to ever wear a Butler uniform. She fi nished her career as Butler’s all-time leading scorer and as the second all-time leading scorer in the Horizon League.

She’s the only player in Butler women’s basketball history to score over 2,000 career points, fi nishing with an all-time record 2,018 points. She was a four-time, fi rst team all-league performer, and she was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year in 1992-93.

The talented center was named District 4 Freshman of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers in 1989- 90 and was picked to the All-America team by Basketball Times in 1992-93. She currently owns 11 Butler single game, single season and career basketball records.

Shelton’s coaching career is equally as impressive as the former Butler standout spent 16 years at the post of the Mt. Vernon High School women’s basketball team leading the Marauders to a 260-107 record during her tenure. Recent success includes winning a 3A State Championship in 2013, reaching semi-state in 2012 and fi ve sectional titles ranging from 2003, 2005, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Numerous coaching awards have been handed to Shelton throughout her outstanding career, some of which include being named NFHS State Coach of the Year in 2011-12, ICGSA State Coach of the Year in 2011-12, ICGSA District 4 Coach of the Year in 2010-11, and being a two-time IBCA District Coach of the Year in 2000 and again in 2012.

An exceptional player at Seymour H.S., Shelton was inducted into the Indiana High School Hall of Fame as a member of the Silver Anniversary Team in 2014. She left Seymour to continue her career at Butler and has only had one coaching job since as the head coach at Mt. Vernon.

Shelton earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Butler in elementary education in May of 1993. She went back to school to earn her Master’s degree in special education at IUPUI in May of 2003. 1188 • BButlerutler Women’sWomen’s BasketballBasketball 22014-15014-15 MMEDIAEDIA GGUIDEUIDE

FAHKARA MALONE • ASSISTANT COACH • 1ST SEASON AT BUTLER • PURDUE ‘10

Head Coach Kurt Godlevske put the fi nishing touches on the Butler women’s basketball coaching staff with the hire of FahKara Malone as an assistant coach. A former standout student-athlete at Purdue University, Malone comes to Butler after working as an assistant coach at the University of Evansville.

Malone worked as the Director of Basketball Operations at Evansville for two seasons before making the jump to a full-time assistant coach during the 2013-14 campaign. The Purple Aces went 15-16 in her lone season on the sideline. The team ended the year with a trip to the Women’s Basketball Invitational after winning eight-straight games to close out the regular season.

A native of Evansville, Malone was a four-year high school letter-winner at Memorial High School before continuing her basketball career at Purdue. Known for her defensive presence on the court, Malone set the Memorial school record for most career steals. Four years later at Purdue, Malone set the same milestone at the collegiate level with 351 career steals as a Boilermaker.

Malone marks one of nine players in Boilermaker history to be a four-year starter, while serving three of those years as a team captain. A starter in 124 of 129 games, Malone totaled 1,057 points and 513 assists while leading her squad to postseason play every year and collecting a plethora of accolades.

The Boilers made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a pair of Elite Eight appearances, and a trip to the WNIT second round during Malone’s playing days. She was a three-time Big Ten All-Defensive Team selection and was equally as talented off the court, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors three times.

As a senior, Malone was selected as a Big Ten Medal of Honor nominee, the conference’s oldest award, which is given annually to a student in the graduating class at each university that demonstrated profi ciency in scholarship and athletics.

An instant impact player at Purdue, Malone was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after starting in 36 of 37 games becoming the fi rst freshman to start in over 90 percent of the games in a single- season since 2000-01. She was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team as a sophomore, taking home Most Outstanding Player honors after leading Purdue to their second Big Ten Championship.

Malone graduated from Purdue in 2010 with a degree in Psychology. She earned her master’s degree from Evansville in Public Health Administration. BButlerSports.comutlerSports.com • 1919 BBUTLERUTLER WWOMEN’SOMEN’S BBASKETBALLASKETBALL

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

The purpose of Butler’s strength training program is two-fold. One is to reduce the risk of injury and the second is to increase performance potential. By increasing the strength of each athlete’s muscles, bones and connective tissues, the chance of incurring an injury while performing lessens. The increase in functional strength is also an important step toward reaching the athlete’s athletic potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses flexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed.

The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000-square foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, stairmasters, and related apparatus, and allows Butler athletes to train in an open and comfortable environment.

The bus used by the Butler women’s basketball program for road games features all-electric plush recliners for the players as well as a lounge area at the rear. The fl eet also comes complete with multiple fl at panel TVs, two satellite systems with Direct TV®, twin DVD systems, on-board rest room and a galley area complete with ice chests.
