(March 23, 2010) – In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Brandon Knight of Pine Crest School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Knight was surprised with the news during his second period class at Pine Crest School by former Miami Heat Center Alonzo Mourning, who earned Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in 1987-88. “When I received this award in 1988, it was a really significant moment for me, so it felt great to surprise Brandon with the news and invite him into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Mourning, a Gold Medalist, seven-time NBA All-Star, and two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. “Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.” Knight becomes the first-ever student athlete from the state of Florida to repeat as Gatorade National Player of the Year in any sport. He joins 2009 NBA MVP LeBron James (2002-03 & 2001-02, St. Vincent-St. Mary, Akron, Ohio) and 2007 NBA Draft Number One Overall Pick Greg Oden (2005-06 & 2004-05, Lawrence North, Indianapolis, Ind.) as the only student-athletes to win Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [email protected] NEUMANN-GORETTI HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED GATORADE PENNSYLVANIA GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR CHICAGO (March 6, 2020) — In its 35th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company today announced Diamond Johnson of Neumann-Goretti High School as its 2019-20 Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Johnson is the first Gatorade Pennsylvania Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Neumann- Goretti High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Johnson as Pennsylvania’s best high school girls basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Johnson joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Maya Moore (2005-06 Collins Hill High School, Ga.), Rashanda McCants (2004-05, Asheville High School, N.C.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central High School, Ill.), Diana Taurasi (1998-99 & 1999-00, Don Antonio Lugo High School, Calif.), Shyra Ely (1999-00, Ben Davis High School, Ind.), Katie Smith (1991-92, Logan High School, Ohio) and Lisa Leslie (1988-89, Morningside High School, Calif.). The 5-foot-6 senior guard led the Saints to a 16-9 record and the Class 3A state tournament at the time of her selection. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Johnson averaged 29.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 3.5 assists through 25 games. -

Samuelson was surprised with the news at school by two-time WNBA All-Star and former three-time Gatorade Delaware Girls Basketball Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne. “It was exciting for me to be able to surprise Katie Lou with the Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year award, especially because she is such a deserving winner,” Delle Donne said. “Katie Lou is a well-rounded individual who has already accomplished so much on and off the court, so it's an honor for me to welcome her into the prestigious Gatorade Player of the Year family.” The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Samuelson as the nation’s best high school girls basketball player. According to Lieutenant Frederick D. Lewis of the Hartford Police Depart- ment, the body of nineteen year-old Sandra Rivera was found by a cemetery caretaker about noon on Sunday, March 4. Police investigators concluded that she had been strangled by hand but had .not been sexually assaulted. Ms. Rivera, of no certain address, had been arrested several times for pros- titution but had not been convicted. She was found with her white tank top, white rugby shirt and black wool sweater pulled up over her face, and wore nothing else except white socks and pink and white rosary beads around her neck, said Officer Lewis.
