She is in the first grade at a new school and has had a hard time finding friends. Bullying is any kind of aggressive behavior that causes physical or emotional pain to others. When people engage in bullying, they’re trying to gain power over someone they think is smaller or weaker. We all do things that sometimes hurt the feelings of others, even if it’s by accident. Bullying behavior is different, however, because it is done on purpose, and it happens over and over again. Gardner and Lily both live in Utah, but bullying can happen anywhere. Cyberbullying is hard to stop because no one knows who is sending the messages. Verbal bullying—using words to hurt. This can include saying mean things or embarrassing someone by calling him or her names or making fun of him or her in front of others. Bullies also might tell stories or spread lies about others. Social bullying—using actions and words to exclude someone from a group or to break up friendships. This can include setting up other kids to take the blame for things that happen in class or on the playground. It can also mean forcing another person to do something, like giving food or money to a bully. Bullying Hurts Everyone • Level V 9 10 Who Is a Bully? A TEACHER’S VIEW Professor Susan Limber says there is no simple explanation for why some people become bullies. Limber studies the science of emotions and behavior at Clemson University in South Carolina and helps create bully-free schools. Today’s definitions of bullying extend far beyond the physical aspects to include verbal, emotional, sexual and cyberbullying. Children involved in bullying suffer from a wide spectrum of physical and emotional symptoms, including depression, irritability, anxiety, sleeping difficulties, headaches and/or stomachaches. Furthermore, the consequences of bullying increasingly include such serious problems as eating disorders, school absenteeism, running away, alcohol and drug abuse and above all, self-inflicted, accidental injuries and suicidal behavior.1 This Joint Position Statement on Prevention of Bullying-Related Morbidity and Mortality was released in 2011 by the Board of the American Psychiatric Association in partnership with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

    Press Release Patterson helps prepare astronauts for future visit to asteroid (October 13, 2011) Professor Mark Patterson of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, an aquanaut with several previous trips to “inner space” aboard the Aquarius underwater habitat, will assist a team of NASA astro- nauts as they visit the habitat from October 17-29 to develop techniques for a planned future trip to an asteroid. Patterson is part of the science support team for NEEMO 15—the latest mission of the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations project. NEEMO sends groups of NASA astronauts and engineers to live in the Aquarius undersea research station as training for work in the weightlessness of outer space. Patterson, Director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory at VIMS, is a pioneer in the development and use of underwa- ter robots for marine research.
