4 UNICEF Canada Volunteer Handbook 2008 Overview of UNICEF Canada

UNICEF Canada’s Mission

To engage Canadians of all ages to help support every child around the world to grow up healthy, educated and safe.

UNICEF Canada’s Vision That UNICEF Canada will be the first choice for those who want to make a difference in the

lives of children around the world.

UNICEF Canada is committed to:

• Children’s rights and protection; • Raising funds to support our development, education and advocacy programmes; • Our public education and advocacy work in Canada, which is critical to our ability to fund and support our programmes; • Our volunteers, who are and will continue to be a valuable resource; • Our staff, who execute our programmes; • Making the most effective use of the funds entrusted to us; and • Providing non-partisan and non-sectarian support of broadly-based programmes in developing countries, which are carried out through local partnerships and which will benefit the maximum number of children.

By operating according to these principles, we believe that we will mobilize the support of all Canadians and be a dynamic source of help for the world’s underserved children.

UNICEF Canada Values As staff and volunteers, we care deeply about our work on behalf of the world’s children, and always represent this work with integrity. • Passionate & Principled – staff and volunteers have an unshakeable commitment to the rights of children • Resolute and unwavering – we are committed to the advancement of children’s rights and not intimidated by those with opposing views • Influential and Visionary – we are unique in our ability to leverage enormous resources on behalf of children, and work to literally change the world for children • Innovative and Credible – we never stop searching for the best interventions for children, and our deep experience in the field informs transformative research and action for children. Our knowledge of children’s well-being and rights is evidence-based. Our communications are dynamic and inspiring. • Global and Authoritative – we have unparalleled presence around the world and our leadership among governments, civil society and communities is unrivalled • Effective – we save lives. 6 UNICEF Canada Volunteer Handbook 2008 Structure of UNICEF Canada

UNICEF Canada is governed by a dedicated team of leadership volunteers, the Board of Directors. The board works to set objectives for UNICEF Canada, ensuring that resources are well-managed and monitoring the organization’s progress with respect to the strategic plan. They also nurture important relationships with peers and potential donors. The CEO is responsible for implementation of the means to achieve the mission and strategic objectives and for all operational matters, which in turn are delegated to other staff.

The National Office for UNICEF Canada is located in Toronto and there are six Regional Offices located as follows:

• British Columbia • Ontario • Alberta • Quebec • Prairie Region • Atlantic Region

The six Regional Offices serve as the focal point of regional fundraising and advocacy activities. (See back cover for details)

UNICEF Canada Programmes

UNICEF Canada has a number of programmes and initiatives which facilitate our domestic fundraising and advocacy efforts. The following organizational chart outlines how UNICEF Canada’s programmes and activities are divided:

President & CEO

Communications

Programmes & Marketing & Finance & Regional Advocacy Development Operations

UNICEF Canada’s programmes and initiatives described next work together to achieve our mission. The involvement of our volunteers is a key factor to the success of many of these areas.

UNICEF Canada Volunteer Handbook 2008 7

Communications

Communications builds the reputation of UNICEF as the leader in global children’s issues and increases understanding of UNICEF’s work. Activities include public relations, proactive media relations, dynamic programme and leadership information on the UNICEF Canada website, newsletters and key UNICEF publications.

Programmes & Advocacy

Advocacy develops strategies to engage Canadians, the private sector, civil society and government on matters affecting the rights of children with the intent to influence policy and programme direction in Canada. This is done mainly through promoting public awareness, conducting and sharing research, informing public policy and advocating; convening stakeholders; and sharing practical information, tools and standards and promoting the participation of children and young people.

Education for Development (EDEV) promotes a national and regional education program to engage Canadian educators, education institutions and young people in understanding and taking action for children’s rights and global development. Activities include managing the Speakers’ Bureau, participating in conferences and workshops, and producing curriculum-linked resources in partnership with teachers and schools.

International Programmes works with UNICEF country offices and UNICEF International to develop and review funding proposals, monitor and evaluate programmes and report back on the results and impacts of programming funded by UNICEF Canada. The department also advocates for changes in policy and practice of the Canadian government and private sector in order to improve the situation of children around the world.

Marketing & Development

Corporate Development and Community Partnerships establishes brand awareness and revenue-generating partnerships through strategic alliances within the corporate and community sectors. Activities of this division also include “School & Youth” engagement and fundraising initiatives (see below), Gift-in-Kind donations, special events, marketing and celebrities.

Direct Marketing communicates to large numbers of individual donors and prospects who mostly make donations under $1,000. Areas include Global Parents (monthly donor programme), Single gift donors, Gifts of Magic (symbolic gifts) and Time to Draw the Line (monthly giving with an HIV/AIDS focus).

Sales & Marketing drives marketing and sales of greeting cards and gifts through kiosks in UNICEF regions and develops retail partnerships through which to sell these products across Canada, and volunteer and independent retailers. This activity also includes consumer and business catalogues, as well as a Web site and an e-greeting card offer.

8 UNICEF Canada Volunteer Handbook 2008

School & Youth Programmes promote child and school engagement in UNICEF fundraising activities, mainly through our Trick-or-Treat campaign (TOT). TOT raises funds for our Schools for Africa programme and builds awareness of UNICEF’s work. Our Schools for Africa programme is a partnership (2005-2009) with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to build schools in specified African countries, where children may otherwise not have access to education. These programmes also include campus clubs at universities across the country and high school engagement.

The Major Donor Programme engages Canada’s wealthiest individuals, families and foundations as significant investors. Programme components include bequests, planned giving and gifts of stocks and securities; raising $14 million towards Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS; influential volunteer leaders in every region across Canada – cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major donors.

Finance & Regional Operations

Corporate Services handles all of the administrative aspects of UNICEF’s operations, including facilities management, office services, warehousing and logistics.

Finance oversees all of the financial elements of the organization, including accounting, financial analysis, budgeting and planning, external and internal reporting and payroll.

Human Resources is responsible for recruitment and staffing, learning and development, rewards and recognition and employee relations.

Information Technology (IT) plans, develops and maintains information systems, databases, network operations and all hardware and software of the organization. IT is also responsible for the development and maintenance of the UNICEF Canada Web sites.

Regional Operations manages the operations of UNICEF’s six regional offices across Canada as they implement programmes and activities regionally. Each region has a regional director and a team of staff to implement UNICEF programmes in their region.

Supporter Relations processes donations and orders for greeting cards and provides customer service to supporters and donors

Volunteer Services promotes the engagement of Canadians in UNICEF’s fundraising, education and advocacy initiatives and supports volunteer programme operation, development and recognition.

The UNICEF Brand

• A brand is a symbol or visual representation of an organization’s identity and is often made up of a logo (an identifiable image) and tagline (an identifiable line of text). • The revised UNICEF logo (bottom left) and tagline (bottom right) were implemented at the International level in 2007.

• Our aim is to consistently present a simple, bold, optimistic and contemporary image. • UNICEF Canada has guidelines governing the use of our brand including: colours, use of logo, font and photos. All volunteers and staff must adhere to these guidelines. To find out more, contact your regional office.

Sometimes the voices of children aren’t heard as loudly as they should be. To help children raise their voices and advocate for their rights, UNICEF is fortunate to have the assistance of celebrities in Canada and around the world. UNICEF has been benefiting from the support of well-known personalities almost since its inception. In 1953, Danny Kaye lent his time and status to help UNICEF’s efforts worldwide, making the organization the first to harness the power of a celebrity to reach millions of ordinary people and bring the world home to them.

What is the Convention on the Rights of the Child? On November 20, 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention is a treaty that spells out the basic human rights to which children worldwide are entitled. The Convention protects these rights by setting minimum standards for the survival, growth and protection of children. Canada was among the first countries to ratify the Convention. It has since become the most rapidly and widely-accepted covenant of human rights in history, ratified by every country with the exceptions of the United States and Somalia.  & 2'1 "1',4-*4#+#,25'2&2&# -,4#,2'-, BC74+=8C43$0C8>=B064=2HA4B?>=B81;45>A278;3A4=+$ 7>;3B0B?4280;<>=8C>A8=60=3 8= A>;4 8= A460A3B C> C74 >=E4=C8>=  *74B4 A>;4B A4@8A4 C70C +$  ?A>E834 4G?4AC 03E824 0=3 5028;8C0C4 8=CA0.BC0C4 2>=B;C0C8>=B  +$  B??>ACB C74 ><<8CC44 >= C74 (867CB >5 C74 78;3 1H B1<8CC8=6 A4?>ACB 5;58;;8=6 A4@4BCB 5>A C427=820; 03E824 0=3 ?0AC828?0C8=6 8= C74 2>=B834A0C8>= >5 )C0C4B &0AC84BK A4?>ACB   +$  F>A:B =8E4AB0;;H C> B??>ACA0C85820C8>=0=38=>5C74>=E4=C8>=C>4=BA4C74A867C>54E4AH278;3C> BAE8E0; ?A>C42C8>= 0=3 5;58;;<4=C >5 78B >A 74A ?>C4=C80;  +$  0;B> F>A:B C> 4320C4 278;3A4=0=3C74?1;82>=C74?A>E8B8>=B>5C74>=E4=C8>=    -0+-0#',$-0+ 2'-,#4'1'22&# , "' ,5# 1'2# 2555$3,'!#$$! -02&#,2#0, 2'-, * 5# 1'2# 2555$3,'!#$$-0%$

Grievance Process This Grievance Process offers guidelines and a formal process to address and resolve concerns, conflicts and grievances arising from interactions with other staff or volunteers; or experience with UNICEF Canada’s programmes, policies or procedures. The Grievance Process below differs from grievances of harassment or discrimination which follow a separate Board policy and process listed in the Red Book. All volunteers and staff will have access to this grievance process.

Steps to Resolving a Grievance: The person with the complaint or grievance (Grievant) is encouraged to have a discussion with the person(s) with whom they have a complaint and make every attempt to find their own solutions to resolve the problem before escalating it further.

If, however, no resolution can be found, the Grievant may notify the Regional/National Director who will set up a meeting with the Grievant and the one being complained against. The Director will hear both sides of the story, and will encourage the participants to find a resolution. If they are unable to do so, the Director will make a decision on how to proceed and deal with the matter. If the grievance is with the Director, the Manager, Volunteer Services and/or Director, Human Resources will be called upon to mediate. 1SgUR)eVRiHagVfabgfHgVfSVRQpVgUgUVfeRfYg gURr`HrHccRHYgURQRPVfVbagUebTUH$-0+ * .0-!#11 • BUR)eVRiHag`HrSVYRHPb`cYHVagVapeVgVaTpVgUgUR5HaHTRebSDbYagRReAReiVPRf pVgUVaQHrfbSgURRiRag pUVPUpVYYVaPYQRHfgHgR`RagbSgURHPgVbafPb`cYHVaRQbS YVfggURHggR`cgfHgeRfbYgVba HaQHQRfPeVcgVbabSgUReR`RQrgURrHeRfRRXVaT • &RcRaQVaTbagURaHgeRbSgURPb`cYHVag HURHeVaTpVYYIRHeeHaTRQ! • AbYRYrpVgUgURD8 (VaHaPR9@RTVbaHY7cReHgVbaf7@ • EVgUgUR8eRfVQRag D8 (VaHaPR9@RTVbaHY7cReHgVba HaQbe&VeRPgbebS0@ gUR@RTVbaHY&VeRPgbeHaQbe6HgVbaHY&VeRPgbe HaQgUR5HaHTRebSDbYagRRe AReiVPRf • BURURHeVaTpVYYHYYbpHabgURebccbegaVgrSbegUR)eVRiHaggbHegVPYHgRgURVePbaPReaf • 7aPRgURURHeVaTUHfgHXRacYHPR gURfgHSSgRH`pVYYgHXRHYYgURfgRcfaRPRffHerVabeQRe gb`HXRHQRPVfVbapVgUVagRaQHrf #peVggRaPbcrbSgURQRPVfVbapVYYIRTViRagbgUR )eVRiHag • (bYYbpVaTgUHg VSgUR)eVRiHagVffgVYYabgfHgVfSVRQ gURr`HrHccRHYgbgUR$bHeQVa peVgVaTgUebTUgUR8eRfVQRag BUebTUbggUVfRagVeRTeVRiHaPRcebPRff fgeVPgPbaSVQRagVHYVgrpVYYIR`HVagHVaRQgbgURRqgRag gUHgVgHYYbpfSbeHYYcHegVRfgbeRHPUH`gHYYrHTeRRHIYReRfbYgVba
