Publication Date 2015 Peer reviewed|Thesis/dissertation eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Programmed Moves: Race and Embodiment in Fighting and Dancing Videogames by Irene Yi-Jiun Chien A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media and the Designated Emphasis in New Media in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Linda Williams, Chair Professor Kristen Whissel Professor Greg Niemeyer Professor Abigail De Kosnik Spring 2015 Abstract Programmed Moves: Race and Embodiment in Fighting and Dancing Videogames by Irene Yi-Jiun Chien Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Media Designated Emphasis in New Media University of California, Berkeley Professor Linda Williams, Chair Programmed Moves examines the intertwined history and transnational circulation of two major videogame genres, martial arts fighting games and rhythm dancing games. Fighting and dancing games both emerge from Asia, and they both foreground the body. They strip down bodily movement into elemental actions like stepping, kicking, leaping, and tapping, and make these the form and content of the game. I argue that fighting and dancing games point to a key dynamic in videogame play: the programming of the body into the algorithmic logic of the game, a logic that increasingly organizes the informatic structure of everyday work and leisure in a globally interconnected information economy. -

October 7, 2016 Press Release 3-1-3, Uchihiranomachi, Chuo-ku Osaka, 540-0037, Japan Capcom Co., Ltd. Haruhiro Tsujimoto, President and COO (Code No. 9697 First Section of Tokyo Stock Exchange) Monster Hunter Characters Utilized for First Time in Osaka Prefectural Police’s Vehicle-related Crime Awareness Campaign! - Nationally popular series mascots contribute to prevention of vehicle crime - Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that two characters from its popular Monster Hunter series, Felyne and Melynx, will be utilized for the first time as mascots on promotional goods in the Osaka Prefectural Police’s vehicle-related crime awareness program. The Monster Hunter series consists of hunting action games that pit players against giant monsters in a beautiful natural environment. The series has sparked a social phenomenon known as the “Monster Hunter Craze” by introducing a new kind of communication style for players through cooperative play focused on hunting monsters with their friends. Since the first Monster Hunter title made its debut in 2004, the series has expanded beyond games into other media, and overall has grown into a mega-hit with cumulative sales of more than 38 million units as of September 30, 2016. Further, the first RPG of the series, Monster Hunter Stories, is scheduled to be released on October 8, 2016. Since 2013, Capcom has worked with Osaka Prefectural Police as well as with the police forces of neighboring prefectures to implement a vehicle-related theft prevention campaign. This campaign has contributed to a reduction in the number of incidents of motor vehicle theft and vehicle parts theft (where one part of a car, such as its license plate, is stolen); however, compared with other prefectures, vehicle-related crime remains prevalent in the Osaka Prefecture. -

STORY As Rindo progresses through the Reapers’ Game, he starts having visions—fragmented flashes of incidents that may soon occur. In one such vision of the future, he sees a ghastly sight: the entire city of Shibuya, crumbling into dust… Is this an unavoidable outcome, or can Rindo change the fate of the city? Are the Shinjuku Reapers—whose own home was recently destroyed—in any way involved with Shibuya’s impending doom? She was with Neku and Beat when a certain post-Game incident occurred three years ago.
