The End of the War

(By Florence Breed) Growing up during the war in Britain was not easy. Bombing raids, food rationing and the great loss of civilian lives made us very sad, but in June, 1944, the tide of war began to turn when the mighty forces of America helped us to invade Hitler's Europe. Our city was crowded with such beliefs. For example, it The cat’s got the measles change to buy a large bag of American airman who always was bad luck to walk under a And the measles got the CAT!” sweets. My mother’s piano was dragged out on to the pavement where she played popular songs to help the merri- ment. There was a bonfire lit in many of the ruined houses, and we drew pictures of that evil man, Hitler, and then with delight threw our drawings on to the bonfire to burn him. Later, it became known that during those last months when the Allied Forces were near Berlin, Hitler had hidden in his underground bunker, too afraid to leave it and only asking for chocolate and cake to eat. A typically cowardly deed was to poison his faithful dog before shooting himself — he thus avoided being taken prisoner and suitably punished — not like his friend, the Italian dictator, Benito Mus- solini, who was hanged upside down as a well-de- served punishment by his own people. Bombed Out My hometown of Plymouth had been badly bombed during the first four years of that terrible war, and now we all waited to see the rebuilding of it, but it would take many more years after the war for that to happen. Throughout the war, I remember it was a daily rit- ual to listen to the wireless, and no matter what you were doing, everyone had to stop to listen to the latest news, especially if it was Churchill speaking and we certainly hung on every one of his words. By the end of the war it was not just my home town that lay in ruins, but also the bombed cities of Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff, Bristol and Swansea. Of course, our capital city, London, had been the worst bombed of all, as it was bombed on 76 nights in succession, when over 40,000 people were killed. Assassination Attempts It was only after the war that we learned of the as- sassination attempts on Hitler’s life by Germans, who were moved to anger by his murderous actions. However, Hitler survived all of these plots against him, and it was the last attempt on his life which makes one laugh. Apparently, there was a bomb planted underneath the table where the Fuhrer was meeting his staff and when Hitler was leaning over the table, looking at a map, the bomb exploded. There was a loud crash and it blew the great man’s trousers off, but did no harm. It would have made a very funny film to see Hitler’s half-naked torso with tattered trousers hanging from his bare legs. What a pity their plan failed to kill him, although others in that same room died! Songs It was the wireless which gave us inspiration and made certain singers popular. Vera Lynn was famous with her songs such as “We’ll Meet Again”, or, “White Cliffs of Dover”, and especially “Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye”. We also loved the music of Glenn Miller’s band with his loud trombones and sax; he made us want to roll up the carpet and dance. The popular jazz band- leader later joined the US army, and died in a plane crash just before the war ended.
