It claims that Proto- Romantic writers used conservative, traditional images of mothers to conceal much more radical political agendas of egalitarian relations or republicanism. The first chapter offers an overview of motherhood in the historical German context. It investigates two pedagogy treatises, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi’s Wie Gertrud ihre Kinder lehrt (1801) and Jean Paul Friedrich Richter’s Levana, oder Erziehlehre (1806), before moving to the letters of Caroline and Dorothea Schlegel. Both treatises depict mothers as central to the family and creators of socio-political change, vi who, in schooling children, shape nations. They instill social consciousness and foster national self-identities in their children, thereby changing social power structures. Early- childhood education tracts thus produce an ideology that elevates mothers as contributors to free nations in a peaceful Europe. The correspondences of two Romantic mothers, Dorothea Schlegel and Caroline Schlegel Schelling, demonstrate how mothers themselves used conventional rhetoric about maternal dedication to negotiate social expectations, veiling unacceptable choices a traditional rhetoric of mother-love. The notions that mothers are central to their children’s lives and dedicated to their welfare expand, in these mothers’ letters, an older social order into an emerging Romantic public sphere. This dissertation thus reconsiders scholarly debate about the ideological weight of the feminine and the maternal in Romantic thought. These mothers, like their contemporaneous treatises, made daily maternal practices into a facet of the Romantic agenda for rethinking social structures. They married the tasks of maintaining a communal, multi-generational artists’ household with an ideal of friendship and the responsibilities of motherhood, and integrated writing, editing, and personal correspondence with Romantic theories of education. During this era of profound socio-cultural change, an ideal of motherhood developed, hand-in-hand with Romantic redefinitions of the human being, man, woman, or child. German-speaking authors wishing to differentiate themselves, especially from the French, posited a distinctly German and Swiss notion of family that included idealized representations of mothers. In creating these images of mothers and the home, concerned authors reassessed the place and value of individuals within the family and of families within society. They then presented their readers an image of the mother-child relationship as the cradle of human morality and consciousness and showed German mothers to be the agents fostering those qualities for the benefit of wider society. These maternal images and representations of family, which I will examine as they appeared in two works of pedagogy of the period, thus presented a new vision of family hierarchies, of mothers’ 1 roles, and of effective, mother-directed childhood education. Familial images provoked the readers’ self-awareness as members of a community greater than their own family, village or province, and led to a conception of themselves as specifically German or Swiss fathers and mothers, raising their children in a manner consistent with those values and cultures. This endeavor connected their work with the nation-building ambitions so central to the Romantic program. In proposing idealized maternal and domestic images, Romantic and proto- Romantic authors provide a literary alternative to the Bildungsroman, in which the hero must leave his home and family to achieve adulthood, the works I investigate present the home, especially the mother, as crucial to an individual’s development. The technical answer is that they are norms of international law that are formulated in abstract, universally applicable terms. For example, Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person." Such a norm contains no reference to any context or circumstances that might justify limiting those rights - and therein lies the power of human rights language. When lawyers or activists attach a particular situation to a human rights norm, they seek to persuade others to see that situation in isolation from its historical context and usual justifications, as a violation. Human rights norms are ahistorical and decontextualized, and that is the point of invoking them. After the Second World War, activists around the world hoped that people would think ever more in terms of human rights norms, and the Allies encour­ aged that hope. However, the use of the ahistorical fanguage of human rights in occupied and West Germany - the subject of this essay - was difficult and inevitably controversial. In practice, the language of human rights in West Germany highlighted the tension between the Federal Republic's most prized moral claims: to have enshrined timeless, universal human rights, and to have accepted the specific historical responsibility of Nazism. While the former asks listeners to set aside context, the latter depends on a specific context for its significance. \ There was and is no single, typical West German "take" on human rights.

    THE POLITICS OF CARE' Laura T. Kessler INTRODUCTION Can family caregiving be a form of political resistance or expression? It can, especially when done by people ordinarily denied the privilege of family privacy by the state. Feminist and queer theorists within law have, for the most part, over- looked this aspect of caregiving, regarding unpaid family labor as a source of gender-based oppression or as an undervalued public commodity. Conse- quently, prominent feminist and queer legal theorists have set their sights on wage work1 or sexual liberation2 as more promising sources of emancipation for women. Although other legal feminists continue to focus on the problem of devalued family labor, these theorists tend to justify increased support for care work primarily on the benefits it confers on children and society, on liberal theories of societal obligation, on ending gender oppression, or on simple hu- man needs.3 This article examines a less well-explored conception of family caregiving within the feminist and queer legal theory literature, revealing the way that family caregiving can be a liberating practice for caregivers qua caregivers. Specifically, care work can constitute an affirmative political practice of resis- tance to a host of discriminatory institutions and ideologies, including the fam- ily, workplace, and state, as well as patriarchy, racism, and homophobia.     A Jurisprudence of Nonviolence YXTA MAYA MURRAYt Is there a way we could theorize about law that would make the world a less violent place? In the 1980s, cultural, or "different voice," feminist legal theory seemed poised to take up the mantles of Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King by incorporating nonviolent values into society and the law. Based on the work of psychologist Carol Gilligan, cultural feminist legal theory valorizes the supposedly female virtues of caretaking and connectivity.' As elaborated by theorists such as Robin West, 2 Martha Minow, Joan Williams, and Christine Littleton,5 it also celebrates women's "ethic of care," which is a brand of moral reasoning that emphasizes empathy, particulars, and human relationships, as opposed to men's "standard of justice," which stresses individualism, abstraction, and autonomy. 6 Though these cultural feminists wrote on issues such as employment law7 and family law,8 their ideas about caring also promised to transform criminal law, Second Amendment jurisprudence, and international law.     PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI I, 2017 KATARZYNA JEDYNAKIEWICZ-MRÓZ Łódź BETWEEN GRETCHEN AND VALKYRIE1 THE MODEL OF WOMANHOOD IN THE CONCEPTS AND PRACTICE OF THE LEAGUE OF GERMAN GIRLS (1933–1945) The history of the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel, BDM) has long remained a marginal topic in research concerning the history of the Third Reich. The organisation has been presented either as an element of the history of the Hit- lerjugend2 or in the context of analyses of the position of women in the structure of the Nazi state.3 It was only in 1983 that a monograph was published by Martin Klaus devoted in its entirety to the BDM, being a development of that author’s doc- toral thesis.4 Further academic studies concerning the League would not appear for almost another two decades. In 2000 a book by Sabine Herring and Kurt Schilde was published about the Glaube und Schönheit (“Faith and Beauty”) organisation, a structure set up in 1938 within the BDM.5 Deeper knowledge about the League itself was also supplied by a work by Gisela Miller-Kipp6 and a collection of texts edited by Dagmar Reese.7 The first Polish article about the history of the structure 1 The terms “Gretchen” and “Valkyrie” come from a 1937 article in the magazine Das Deutsche Mädel. Rather than embed an alternative perspective in a universal “view from nowhere”, I adopt a sibling perspective to analyze the meaning of autism as well as the consequences of long-term care. Siblings of people with profound disabilities represent the theoretical and contradictory locations of autonomy and interdependence. Analyzing how siblings maneuver in relation to disability may provide better insight into developing alternative inclusive strategies for marginalized disabled families.

    Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland and the Ethics of Care Lawrence Wilde │ Nottingham Trent University Charlotte Perkins Gilman originally published her utopian novel Herland in serial form in her own small circulation magazine, The Forerunner, in 1915, and it was not until its publication in book form in 1979 that this story of an all-female society reached a world- wide audience. The acclaim it then received from those engaged with second-wave feminism rested on the great skill and humour employed to expose the irrationality and hypocrisy of patriarchal thinking and practice. This is done principally through the dialogues between the women of Herland and the three stereotypical male explorers who have discovered a country of three million women in the remote highlands of South America. The women of Herland have lived without men for 2000 years, leading a communistic existence marked by cooperation, sustainability, intelligence and innovation. The society originated from a natural calamity during a war, a huge avalanche sealing the pass that connected the country to the outside world, in the process taking the lives of all the male warriors. The problem of reproduction was resolved by the miracle of parthenogenesis; originally a woman conceived without male assistance and gave birth to a daughter, followed by other daughters. It was from this mother than the entire society developed. At first each woman produced five daughters, but when this eventually caused a problem of over-population the women learned how to control their fertility and produce only one daughter each, once they had reached the responsible age of 25.
