Bird Ecology, Conservation, and Community Responses
BIRD ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION, AND COMMUNITY RESPONSES TO LOGGING IN THE NORTHERN PERUVIAN AMAZON by NICO SUZANNE DAUPHINÉ (Under the Direction of Robert J. Cooper) ABSTRACT Understanding the responses of wildlife communities to logging and other human impacts in tropical forests is critical to the conservation of global biodiversity. I examined understory forest bird community responses to different intensities of non-mechanized commercial logging in two areas of the northern Peruvian Amazon: white-sand forest in the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and humid tropical forest in the Cordillera de Colán. I quantified vegetation structure using a modified circular plot method. I sampled birds using mist nets at a total of 21 lowland forest stands, comparing birds in logged forests 1, 5, and 9 years postharvest with those in unlogged forests using a sample effort of 4439 net-hours. I assumed not all species were detected and used sampling data to generate estimates of bird species richness and local extinction and turnover probabilities. During the course of fieldwork, I also made a preliminary inventory of birds in the northwest Cordillera de Colán and incidental observations of new nest and distributional records as well as threats and conservation measures for birds in the region. In both study areas, canopy cover was significantly higher in unlogged forest stands compared to logged forest stands. In Allpahuayo-Mishana, estimated bird species richness was highest in unlogged forest and lowest in forest regenerating 1-2 years post-logging. An estimated 24-80% of bird species in unlogged forest were absent from logged forest stands between 1 and 10 years postharvest. -

We picked up to Lucresia and Diana for their second time in Peru because they did a Machu Picchu & Manu years ago but this time for birding at northern Peru and they brought other friends to enjoin even better this trip. February 16th: Drive up to Ticlio Pass and Lagoons We drove up to almost 17,000 feet to get some Andean species; we have seen several Giant Coots, Crested Duck, Pun Ibis, White-winged Cinclodes, Yellow-billed Teal, Puna Teal, White-Tuffted Grebe, Silvered Grebe, Andean Flicker, Creamy-Winged Cinclodes, Andean Goose, Andean Gull, Band-tailed Seedeater and many others. February 17th: Drive to Milloq bogs and Santa Eulalia Valley We started early morning to get Casacalpa village to take different road for the rest of the morning. There we found: Buff-throated Earthcreeper, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Bright-rumped Yellow-finch, Cordilleran Canastero, Streak- throated Canastero, Grassland Yellow-finch, Puna Ground-Tyrant, Rufous-Naped Ground-Tyrant, White-bellied Cinclodes (Endemic), Black Siskin, Hooded Siskin, Dark-winged Miner (Endemic), Grayish Miner, Black-throated Hillstart (Endemic), White-browed Chat-tyrant, Black Metaltail (Endemic), Giant Hummingbird, Bronze-tailed Comet (Endemic), Chestnut-breasted Brush-Finch (Endemic), Black-necked Woodpecker (Endemic), Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Black-crested Tit-Tyrant, Pied-crested Tit-tyrant and many others. We back to Lima Hotel late in the afternoon. February: 18th: Pucusana fishing port, Villa Marshes & afternoon flight to Chiclayo. We did an introductory birding time at southern of Lima for: Humboldt Penguin, Red-legged Cormorant, Guanay Cormorant, Blackish Oystercatcher, Inca Tern, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Surf Cinclodes (Endemic), Blue-footed Booby, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Great Grebe, Yellow-hooded Blackbird, White-cheeked Pintail, among others. -

Mi hip6tesis de trabajo era que existiera una relaci6n estrecha entre todas estas formas. Esta hip6tesis fue apoyada por la gran similitud morfol6gica y las distribuciones casi perfectamente complementarias de todas ellas, la identificaci6n de otra zona de solapamiento y hibridizaci6n limitada, y por la existencia de variaci6n previamente ignorada dentro de la especie intermedia. Concluyo que S. intermedia es un miembro integral del llamado "complejo del Espiguero Variable", y que ésto constituye un grupo monofilético reconocible al nivel de superespecie.Los patrones de distri- buci6n geográfica y divergencia morfol6gica me permiten reconocer los siguientes cuatro aloespecies: S. corvina (Espiguero Variable); S. intermedia (Espiguero Gris); S. murallae (Espiguero del Caquetá); y S. americana (Espigue- ro Alifajeado). E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The construction of hydroelectric power stations can affect the fauna, including the adaptation to the new lentic conditions, and may lead to the disappearance of some species and the colonization of others. Usually, there is a lack of information in the post-flooding phases. The present study is a preliminary qualitative survey of mammals, birds, and reptiles in the influenced area of the Balbina hydroelectric dam (01º55' S, 59º29' W). Species records were made during field trips to the reservoir with no group specific methods. The conservation status of the identified species followed the classification adopted by IUCN. Twenty-two mammals (one endangered – EN), forty-two birds and six reptiles (one vulnerable – VU) were identified. Although the list presented here is preliminary, if appropriately complemented it can be used to understand the effects of hydroelectric dams on the Amazonian fauna. We analyzed vocal divergence between two hybridizing 14 species of sex-role reversed polyandrous shorebirds, the Northern Jacana (Jacana 15 spinosa) and Wattled Jacana (Jacana jacana). We found that J. spinosa calls have higher peak 16 frequency and fundamental frequency than J. jacana calls. We also compared calls 17 between males and females, as both jacana species are sex-role reversed and females compete for 18 male mates. Males produce calls with a higher peak frequency, exhibit shorter note lengths and 19 emit a greater number of notes within a calling bout than females, which could relate to mate 20 attraction. These results suggest that vocal divergence could act as a behavioral barrier to limit 21 hybridization between the species and vocalizations may function differently between male and 22 female jacanas. -

Box 1316 Weldon, CA, 93283 (760) 378-2402 March 2006 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Concern for the southwestern willow flycatcher (Empidonax traillii extimus) has stimulated increased research, management, and conservation of the species on its North American breeding grounds. To supplement current knowledge of breeding populations, recent studies in Latin America (Koronkiewicz et al. 1998; Koronkiewicz and Whitfield 1999; Koronkiewicz and Sogge 2000; Lynn and Whitfield 2000, 2002; Nishida and Whitfield 2003, 2004) have focused on wintering ecology. We extended these efforts by surveying for willow flycatchers from 8–24 December, 2004 in northern Mexico and 18–28 January, 2005 in Ecuador. Our goals were to identify territories occupied by wintering willow flycatchers, describe habitat in occupied areas, collect blood and feather samples, collect colorimeter readings, relocate banded individuals, and identify threats to willow flycatcher populations on the wintering grounds. We spent a total of 103.7 survey hours at 30 survey sites in northern Mexico and Ecuador. In northern Mexico, we surveyed four new locations and revisited three locations from our initial 2002 surveys of Mexico. We detected a minimum of 52 willow flycatchers (Sinaloa = 2, Nayarit = 50). In Mexico, occupied habitat was found along the Pacific coast lowlands. In Ecuador, we revisited locations that had been surveyed annually since 2003 (except Sani, which was surveyed 2004–2005) and found high willow flycatcher densities at a new location along the Río Coca. -

The vistas were amazing, the lodges were varied and delightful, the roads were interesting— thank goodness for Jaime, and the birds were fabulous. With the help of our superb guide Jose Illanes, the group managed to amass a total of 539 species of birds (plus 3 additional subspecies). Everyone helped in finding birds. You all were a delight to travel with, of course, helpful to the leaders and to each other. This was a real team effort. You folks are great. I have included your top birds, memorable experiences, location summaries, and the triplist in this document. I hope it brings back pleasant memories. Hope to see you all soon. Dave David M.
